1. Q: How did you become interested in this career?


A: I was interested in math, physics, and science. It started with reading science fiction
when I was 10 years old.

2. Q: What are the aspects of this career that you like?


A: Solving interesting problems, I really like telling a computer to control things such as, this
is simplistic, like turning on and off LEDS, taking input from a mouse. I like telling a
computer to do something and watching. I enjoy the social interaction and a team solving
problems.

3. Q: What are the aspects of this career that you dislike?


A: This is a young man's job, requires constant learning outside of work and long hours.
Requires a lot of reading and learning. It's a job hard to have with a family for a long period
of time. Two big things are the time commitment and the constant learning. And the
constant threat of losing our job because of oversea outsourcing.

4. Q: Which classes or training did you take in college?


A: I took electrical engineering classes for hardware design. And I took Computer Science
classes to learn how to program and solve problems. My degree was computer engineering.
I took a lot of extra classes for the next ten years to expand my skill set and I also got an
MBA.

5. Q: Is their opportunity for advancement in this career field?


A: Of course, you can take yourself all the way to chief technology officer that works directly
with the CEO at the biggest companies.

6. Q: Can you describe your daily work?


A: A typical day consists of listening to customers and operator issues. Solving the problems,
fixing bugs, creating new features, and guiding my team in their problem solving.

7. Q: Which skill do you think is the most important to perform for this job?
A: Persistence to solve problems. Willingness to learn new things.

8. Q: How do you keep your skills current?


A: Reading technical magazines. Reading books about software engineering. Coursework,
and Seminars.
9. Q: If you were hiring a person for this job, what would you look for?
A: I would ask a simple question, just based on the previous question, what are the last
books you read? It shows their willingness to learn and their curiosity. Looking for how many
aspects of software engineering that they understand. I’m looking for a well rounded
software engineer that understands all aspects of the job.

10. Q: What one thing would you do differently in regards to your career?
A: I would have finished my masters of science and engineering degree.

11. Q: What is your advice for someone who is interested in this field?
A: Be curious, be prepared to learn, and be prepared to work hard.
