3/2020 Summary of street lighting design steps

Street Lighting Design
S U M M A RY O F S T R E E T L I G H T I N G D E S I G N S T E P S

We will start according to the steps of Dailux lighting design program

1st step is to detect the street type

1st step is to detect the street type; it will be according to street users and speed conditions

& Class F: Lighting for roads with special requirement such as roads near air fields, railways and docks

2 n d step is to detect the l umination class and luminaire arrangement
In this step we will select “first” the Lumination class according to road class selected in the previous
step.

“Second step” Determine lighting poles height and distribution

Pole Application
Height

< 6 Meter Majority of side streets or alleys, Public gardens and parking Area to make people feel safe

8 Meter Urban traffic route , the multiplicity of road junctions

10 Meter Urban traffic routes

12 Meter Heavily used routes

18 Meter High mast lighting poles shall be installed at large-scale area such as airports, dockyards,
large industrial areas, sports areas and road Intersections.

Arrangement Street type Lighting Pole height

One Side For narrower roads. Street wide = < pole height
Arrangement
‫عرض الشارع مساو أو اقل من ارتفاع‬
‫العامود‬

Staggered For Medium Size roads Street wide = (1or x1.5) pole
Arrangement height

1.5 ‫ إلى‬1 ‫عرض الشارع مساويا مـن‬

‫ارتفاع الكشاف‬
Opposite For Medium Size roads. Street wide > (x1.5) pole
Arrangement height

‫عرض الشارع أكبر من مرة ونصف‬

‫ارتفاع العامود‬

Median For Large Size roads. Street wide = < pole height
Arrangement
‫ارتفاع الكشافات مساو أو أكبر من‬
‫العرض الفعلى للشارع‬

Overhead For narrower roads. lighting lamp is suspended in

Distribution methods can be combined together as “Opposite & Median”

Intersection lighting

The distribution of lighting in the intersections should be taken into consideration as follows:

In the curves, the following should be observed:

After these steps, we must calculate the result by Dialux and be sure that all results are accepted

Where:

- Lav - average luminance

- Uo - overall uniformity
- Ul - longitudinal uniformity
- TI - threshold increment
- SR - surround ratio

Dialux steps summary:

Calculating steps in Dialux can be found in the contents of the Dialux
