BREAKING PERSONAL AND GENERATIONAL BONDAGES
Part 2 : Sunday June 19, 2005
Some of the problems we face have a root that traces back to previous generations, where some one
opened the door to a sinful lifestyle, demonic activity, etc.
We must also be cautious in our life that we do not give an entrance to sin patterns or demonic influence
that would affect our descendants.
Some questions that people have asked after the message last Sunday:
Q1: When I accept Christ as my personal savior, I acknowledge that His blood cleanses me
from all my sin. Why am I still under the iniquity of my forefathers? Does not the blood of
Jesus cleanse iniquity too? When the Lord has redeemed me, does not His redemption include
freedom from all bondages? Why do I need to explicitly deal with generational bondages?
>> The problem is that the iniquity of the forefathers opened the door to demonic bondages in the area of
the soul and/or body and/or life-experience. When we accept Christ our sins are washed away and we
become brand new in our spirit - our spirit is reborn. However our soul & body & circumstances do not
change. There are many believers who are washed, made righteous in God's sight and are still struggling
with sinful habits, emotional problems, etc. Hence the need to deal with this...
Q2: According to Exodus 20:5-6 God visits the iniquity on those who hate Him and extends
mercy to those who love Him. I do not “hate” God, instead I “love” Him, so why would I even
need to be concerned with breaking family bondages?
>> Similar answer to the previous question. We love God with our heart, and yet many times our soul and
body could have areas of bondage...
Q3: Can I not be the initiator of generational blessing unless I’m done away with the
generational bondage?
>> Being in Christ already makes you an initiator and propagator of the blessing. However the degree to
which we will impact our succeeding generations will be influenced by the level of our obedience, etc. to
God in the life we live.
Q4: Can I stand in the gap for my whole family & seek His forgiveness or should every
individual family member do this personally?
>> Typically, even in the family, God has placed an authority structure - the father/husband being the head
of the family, etc.. While you can have some degree of influence on family members who have authority
over you....the greatest impact of your spiritual decisions will be experienced by those under your realm of
influence. Since we are the current representatives of our family line, we have authority over all vows,
dedications, agreements, etc. that were previously made....and any changes we make affects those who
come after us.
Q5: Is it necessary to know/seek for the cause/origin of the iniquity, which leads to the
generational bondage?
>> In most cases a general renunciation is sufficient to break family bondages and the entrance satan has
gained through ancestral vows, dedications, etc. In some rare cases, the bondage can be very strong and
we need to discover the specific situation in which the ancestor gave the enemy authority into the family
tree to reverse specific things. Often the Holy Spirit reveals these to us, or we get information from those
familiar with our family history.
Q6: Do curses have an affect on believers?

>> Generally speaking the answer is No! “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there
any divination against Israel:” (Numbers 23:23). However, when a believer dabbles with the occult, walks in
fear or gives entrance to satan – this makes that person vulnerable.

Q7: why is our God a jealous God?
>> Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous
God:
Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to
graven images.
Isaiah 40:25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? Saith the Holy One.
Almost every time we read about God declaring that He is a Jealous God – it has to do with worship of false
gods or idols. The reasons why God will not tolerate false worship is (a)This violates our primary purpose –
we were made to worship Him and Him alone. (b)He will not give His glory to another. (c)This in affect
misrepresents who He is. It changes God’s identity to something created rather than who He really is – the
Creator.
Q8: Are “Christian idols” also wrong?

>> Any kind of statue/image that becomes an object of worship, meditation, devotion – no matter what
name we call it or whom it represents, even if it is in a place of Christian worship, is wrong.
Q9: What is wrong in lighting candles?

>> Lighting candles in itself is not wrong – we do it for several reasons, for light, as a symbolic gesture of
unity, for ambience, etc. However, when this is done as an act of worship to an idol or image then we are
violating the fact that we are to worship in spirit and truth (John 4:23,24).
Q10: My housemate has idols? Is this going to affect me?

>> We live in a world that the Bible says is under the control of the devil (1 John 5:18,19) and the wicked
one cannot touch the one who is born of God. The presence of evil around us is not going to affect us,
unless we give entrance to it through fear or worship, etc.
Q11: Does God do this (generational bondage) or is it the devil?

>> Understand that the sins/vows/dedications, etc. of the forefathers opened the doors to demonic
influence and bondage. Through out the Bible, when God states that He “does” something evil or will “send
sickness or an evil spirit”, etc., we must understand it in the sense that the consequence of a persons action
causes God to withdraw His providential protection that He exerts, thus allowing the devil to exert influence,
dominion and oppression. God allows people to go their way. And usually the way people choose, takes
them into a place where the devil holds them in bondage. For example, God invites people to heaven not to
hell – and yet people choose hell instead of heaven! God cannot be blamed for this!
Our right to be free was obtained at the cross

1 John 3:8
Jesus came to destroy EVERY work of the devil – no matter how it has gained entrance into our lives.
Hebrews 2:14 Colossians 2:14,15

Christ defeated satan and left him powerless. He didn’t need to do it for Himself. He was, is and always will
be greater than the devil. He did it for us – as our representative, on our behalf.
Colossians 1:13,14
We have been delivered from the power of satan. The only right that satan can have in our lives is what we
give to him. Ephesians 4:27
1 Peter 1:18,19
The epistle of Peter was addressed to mixed churches of Jewish and Gentile Christians scattered throughout
the Roman provinces of Asia Minor. So the redemption Peter is describing is freedom from the emptiness of
pagan religions/superstitions and Pharisaic formalism.
The power of the blood

I firmly believe that the shed blood of Christ gives me the right to be free from any and every form of
demonic bondage, sinful lifestyle, ungodly behaviour patterns, vows, dedications, curses of my ancestors!
The prison doors are open, but you must walk out to freedom
John 8:32, 36

Shut all doors permanently

The cleansing lasts until demons are given right to enter again through continuous unrepentant sinning.
To break bondages permanently and to get demons to quit permanently – we must permanently shut the
doors that give them rights of entrance into our lives.
Repenting and renounce our own sins and the sins of our forefathers

The authority of the husband/father

1 Corinthians 11:3
There is a God-appointed structure of authority in the natural world that God works through, which the
devils respect.
The husband/father is a spiritual gatekeeper or watchman over his family. He has the right and
responsibility to protect his wife and family. Husbands must take their place of authority and declare to all
demonic powers that they are forbidden to influence their wife and children.
The authority of a believing spouse/parent

1 Corinthians 7:14
In the case where one spouse is an unbeliever, according to this Scripture the believing spouse can exert
spiritual influence over the unsaved spouse. Even the children come under the spiritual influence of the
believing spouse.
The authority of the current generation

Since we are the current representatives of our family line, we have authority over all vows, dedications,
agreements, etc. that were previously made.
Preparation
Remove objects associated with demonic power. When in doubt, get it out.
Renounce any involvement in the occult

Hypnosis, witchcraft, astrology, horoscopes, mind reading, numerology, palm reading, amulets, charms,
birth stones, lucky symbols, talismans, zodiac charms, heavy metal/rock music that promotes ungodliness,
Renounce involvement in false religions, cults, worship of false gods, philosophies contrary to God’s Word.
Believe in what the Lord Jesus accomplished on the cross.
Commit to total obedience to God.

Give God your tithes and offerings. Obey His Word. Live Holy.
Prayer
Lord Jesus I believe that you died on the cross for me. On the cross you shed your blood to set me free
from every power of the devil. Your blood was shed to set me free from the vain and useless lifestyle and
the consequences of such living handed down to me from my forefathers. Today I claim my freedom
because of what you have done for me.
I repent and renounce every sin and rebellion in my life. I receive my freedom from the consequences of my
sin and rebellion.
I repent and renounce every sin and rebellion in the lives of my forefathers. I receive my freedom from the
consequences of their sin and rebellion.
In the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of His blood, I take authority over every bondage and curse
in my life handed down to me from my forefathers. I break every bondage and cancel every curse and all its
effects.
I cancel all vows, curses, dedications, sinful deeds, trauma, agreements, pledges of allegience that have
given satan rights of entry either through my father’s line or through my mother’s, including curses coming
from others and self-inflicted curses.
In Jesus name and by the power of the blood of Christ, I break all the power and influence of the enemy
that has affected my life.
I am free, for Jesus has set me free!
