    Q.2 A new development is located on an unstable sloping ground.

    (a) Please propose ten methods for increasing the stability of slope.

    (b) Recommend two (2) suitable compaction plants for the backfill materials
    of trench excavation and suggest the thickness of each layer of soil. Give
    the reasons for your recommendation.

    (c) Explain the following terms in the context of civil engineering


    construction:
    i.) topsoil, and
    ii.) blinding concrete.

    Q.3 (a) Briefly describe six (6) advantages and four (4) disadvantages of using
    precast concrete.

    (b) Precast façade panel is widely adopted as external wall in Hong Kong.
    The traditional construction method is to install the precast façade panel
    after the completion of adjacent concrete walls and floor slabs.

    i.) Sketch the sectional view of precast façade panel when traditional
    construction method is adopted.

    ii.) Highlight one (1) potential problem identified in i.) and suggest an
    alternative method to overcome it.

    Q.4 (a) Illustrate with sketches the use of raking struts to support the excavation of
    a basement of about 4 m in depth.

    (b) A drainage worker is preparing to work in a manhole. As the responsible


    engineer, you are required to:

    i) identify the possible risks associated with the works inside the
    manhole; and
    ii) propose relevant measures to minimize the risks mentioned in i).
