MODULE

Learning Objectives
Introduction
Making a career decision is as tough as getting the right job for you. There
are factors that you need to consider such as personal values, family
influence, educational attainment and other issues that would greatly affect your
career choice. Likewise, appreciating traditional and non–traditional occupations
would give you a better perspective on a wide range of careers to fill. This module
will help you determine aspects in your life that you need to consider in career
decision making. You will also look into the value of education and academic
achievement as a way to achieve progress in life.
After doing some community advocacy program activity from the previous
module, now you will look into the aspects in your life that may affect your career
decision. In a clean sheet of paper, write at least five (5) significant persons that
influence you and your personal work values that you think would highly affect your
choices in life. You may also have to answer the processing questions in a clean
sheet of paper.
5
Processing Questions:
Activity 1:
Directions: The following situations depict some work values. Choose two (2)
situations and read them carefully. Write your insights on a clean sheet of paper.
And answer the processing questions thereafter.
Situation 1
The teacher asked her learners to bring materials for the slogan making
contest. This will be their output for the end of 2 nd quarter. Owen brought his own
materials, the same with Brett and Rozlin. But Aiza forgot to bring hers. She decided
to borrow materials from Nicole. Willingly, Nicole and Brett lent their materials to her.
Not only they wrote the slogan but also added colorful designs and artworks to make
it more appealing to the eyes. The teacher marked their works with “Very Good”.
Situation 2
There will be a Science Quiz Bee for the Grade 10. The adviser asked her five
(5) learners to join. Donna and Laurice invited their co-participants in their class to
conduct group review so that they will be prepared for the event. Everyone
participated and did their best during the contest. Donna won first place followed by
Laurice.
Situation 3
Due to the lack of classrooms, learners are congested in their class. To
resolve the problem, the principal divided the class into 2. Half the class will have
their session in the morning as early as 6 o’clock and the other half in the afternoon.
Yannah lived far from the school. She finds it difficult to meet the call time aside from
the fact that she is also selling vegetables in the market after school. So, she wakes
up early every morning so as not to miss classes and adjust her schedule to attend
her work. At night, she still manages to do her homework so that she can be ready in
class the next day.
Situation 4
Learners were instructed to choose their field of specialization in their
Technology Livelihood Education (TLE) class. Rona, Joselie, and Mavic enrolled in
an electrical installation course while Efren, Enrique, and Floro decided to register in
6
dressmaking class. Their teacher accepted these learners and treated them equally.
7
Processing Questions:
1. What are your thoughts on your chosen situations?
2. Were there similarities with the situations and your personal work values?
3. What is the importance of education in achieving your career goal?
Keep in Mind
Suggested Time Allotment: 15 Minutes
Learners choose their future careers for many reasons. The factors
that affect their career decisions may include but are not limited to family, passion,
job opportunity, job remuneration or income, past experiences and even gender
preference. Moreover, individuals whom these learners look up to may also take part
in this decision. These role models may include parents, teachers, or significant
adults.
In choosing a career, learners often lack information on the job they are
pursuing. For instance, a learner wants to become an engineer because of the high
salary of the job and at the same time there are a lot of job opportunities locally and
internationally. However, they did not realize how much work they needed to put into
it in becoming an engineer.
In the past, there were cases where learners career choice was on hold
and was discouraged from doing what they want because the career choice they
have for themselves doesn’t fit the gender roles in the society. Such as men were
discouraged taking up nursing, social work, and teaching while women are told not to
pursue security and criminology.
In such occurrences, information dissemination takes an important role in
educating and informing learners. These activities include career talks, career
roadshows, career fairs, internships, and On – the Job Trainings.
In reality, after completing Junior High School, some learners are still not
sure what Track and Strand they want to pursue in Senior High School. That is why it
is essential that learners were well – informed on the careers they want to pursue
before they come up with a decision.
Given all these concerns, it is important that in career planning, learners
will be allowed to follow their dreams and goals in life and use their skills, talents and
interests in doing so disregarding gender stereotyping.
At this point in your life, have you decided on what track and strand to take up
in Senior High School? What are the factors you considered in coming up with this
decision?
