The causes and effects of misuse of social media

"Many are 'blind' to the ethics of using social media." That is the headline of the
Berita Harian newspaper published on 28 August 2021. This clearly shows that society now
uses social media as the main medium to communicate but there are still a handful of people
who misuse social media. This situation can be seen through the report by the
Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) which reported that many cases of
fights, fraud, and defamation that disrupt public order stemmed from social media.
Fundamentally, the causes of social media abuse need to be investigated as it can have a
detrimental effect on the users themselves and the community.

The cause of misusing social media is due to peer influence. Teenagers spend more
time with their friends to have fun and love to use social media to express their feelings and
follow their idols such as artists and celebrities. In addition, the support from friends makes
them tend to try something new with the mastery of peers so that sometimes they do not
know that their actions can harm themselves and the individuals around them. Teenagers
misuse social media such as browsing pornographic websites and leaving negative comments
assuming that the action is illegal. Support from peers makes them happy because no one will
criticize their actions. But the fact is the actions of those who abuse social media are also
considered an offense under the law.

Another point the causes of misuse of social media is a lack of monitoring from
parents. The lack of oversight from parents makes teenagers easily engaged with negative
acts presented on social media. Parents should keep an eye on their children's interactions on
social media from the very beginning. Without parental control, teens are prone to misuse
social media such as accessing pornographic websites, cyberbullying, and spreading slander
and false news. They consider the act is not wrong even though it harms them and others.

Besides that, the effect of misusing social media makes someone low self-esteem.
This is because a person will tend to compare himself with peers in various ways based on
what they uploaded on their social media. It makes them feel depressed, insecure, and always
feel restless thinking about other people's views of them. They will feel that they are not
perfect enough and start not loving them-self anymore. This action will develop depression
and disrupt their daily life. Therefore, the victim will isolate themselves from the crowd and
prefer to be alone. This causes people to lose self-confidence and be terrified to deal with
others. It is clear that this social media-centered life will cause a person to experience stress.
Lastly, the negative effect of misuse of social media is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying
defines an act of threatening or degrading a person’s dignity through social media platforms
such as text messages, chats, emails, social websites, or mobile phones. Cyberbullies are
attached to humiliate a person. For instance, a cyberbully will use someone’s social media
account or create fake accounts such as Facebook to spread false news, slander, and disgrace
on social media. This caused the victim depreciated by his peers and internet users for
misbehaving. Not only that, the victim's family may also be attacked by internet users with
allegations that can be embarrassing because of the false news. It will bring down the dignity
of the victim and the victim's family.

In conclusion, users must be right-minded in using social media. We must realize that
every action we take is a personal reflection of us. Therefore, we must present good behavior
and not act arbitrarily using social media.
