Business Communication

SOB 1011

Ms. Cecilia Moudaber

MODULE 1 WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 2

What is the Importance of Communication in General?

The primary objective of communication in general is to convey ideas, plans and

create relationships with others. The intension is to ensure the receiver understands and

provide feedback, this is then called effective communication. Communication enables a

group of people to think and act together. In the case that communication is disrupted, the

efficiency and productivity of individuals reduces.

What is the Importance of Communication in Business?

Communication is important in business. Workplace surveys confirm that recruiters

rank communication skills at the top of the list of qualities they most desire in job seekers

(Guffey & Loewy, 2016). This indicates how important communication is in a business

organization.

In business, communication saves time and miscommunication wastes time. If for a

particular task given to an employee to complete within a stipulated time ends up as a failure

due to miscommunication, it means that that particular task has to be done again. In this case

more time will be spent on rectifying the errors that caused the miscommunication (Kaul,

2012).

Communication in business helps managers in their roles of coordinating, issuing

instructions to their subordinates, collating information and giving presentations. These

activities require effective communication skills, they help managers to accomplish their

tasks (kaul, 2012).

What Do You Currently know About Effective Communication (give an example)

Effective communication is where the sender thinks of a message in accordance to his

ideas or plan, encodes it and transmits it. The receiver receives the message, decodes it and

after understanding provides feedback in tandem with the sender’s original intention.

Basically this is effective communication because both the sender and receiver are satisfied.

Kaul (2012) states that, for communication to be effective, the sender should have a

well-defined goal in his mind. Kaul (2012) Harmony between the goals of the two

communicators makes for good and easy progression of ideas and concepts. The sender needs

to adhere to the following stages:

a. Create an awareness in the mind of the receiver on the topic.

b. Propose his points of view with clarity and preciseness.

c. Enable smooth flow of discussion through observance of communication strategies.

d. Reinforce or correct ideas in the mind of the receiver concerning the goals set.

e. Achieve the goal of communication.

For example. My head of department instructs me to deliver a message to my

technical team about conducting housekeeping in order to curb safety incidents and accidents

in our place of work. In delivering the message, I will go to my technical team, create an

awareness in their minds by discussing the topic smoothly with clarity and preciseness. And

the next day I see my technical team conducting housekeeping. For me effective

communication has been achieved.

What do you expect to know at the end of this course and how would you apply it?

Business communication skills are very important skills that are a must to possess at

the end of this course. I want to be an effective communicator and that is to have the ability to

speak with clarity, to listen carefully, to be able to sell ideas, convince and persuade others,

being able to prepare reports, make proposals and presentations. By the end of this course, I

expect to apply these skills in any organization or establishment by strictly adherence to the

7C’s & 4S’s and produce the desired results.
