REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES
During scheduled inspections, some operators have reported damage on the Aft Engine Mount Inner
Retainer Brackets Part Number (PN) 238-0252-505 fitted on A320 Family Aircraft powered by
CFM56-5A/-5B engines.
The Inner Retainer Bracket provides a locking feature to the two nuts of the inner and outer pins
attaching the Aft Links to the Aft Mount Beam (also named Aft Engine Mount). The same Retainer is
used for the three Link Assemblies of the Aft Engine Mount. In case of broken Inner Retainer Bracket,
the locking feature is lost and knowing that these Nuts are not self-locked, they could become loose.
Subsequently, the Pins can also loosen and the Aft Mount Link would be no longer secured to the Aft
Engine Mount. In this condition, the certification loads cannot be sustained anymore.
The outcome of investigations confirmed that the Retainer damage is due to the fatigue cracking
mechanism resulting from the dynamic effect of Engine vibrations.
On March 2013, the Alert Operators Transmission (AOT) A71N001-12 and UTAS AEROSTRUCTURES
Service Bulletin No. RA32071-146, rendered mandatory by EASA Airworthiness Directive (AD) No.
2015-0021, requested one time inspection for damaged Inner Retainer Brackets and the replacement
of nonconforming "Dull" surface finish Retainers by the "Bright" surface finish Retainers. The
nonconforming "Dull" surface finish was more prone to pitting corrosion and which facilitated crack
initiation.
However the main cause of crack initiation remains the vibration dynamic effect that affects both
Retainers with "Dull" and "Bright" surface finishes. The nonconforming "Dull" surface’s pitting corrosion
is an aggravating factor.

SUMMARY
In addition the UTAS AEROSTRUCTURES Service Bulletin No. RA32071-160 was published to advise
repetitive inspections of the affected Aft Engine Mount Retainer Brackets.
In 2015, the manufacturer UTAS AEROSTRUCTURES has introduced the "Rev. H" ensuring the
surface finish of maximum 32 Roughness Average (RA) as per design. The identification with ’-505’ and
a manufacture date have been engraved to the part.
This results from another issue of nonconforming batch not complying with a surface finish of max 32
RA, which showed a smoother surface finish than the "dull" parts of the past, and a detailed inspection
cannot allow its identification and the removal out of service. This last quality escape is addressed in
the Service Bulletin No. A320-71-1070.
Due to this AIRBUS and UTAS AEROSTRUCTURES have launched investigations for a design review
and to introduce a final fix during the year 2016.
This Inspection Service Bulletin details a periodic inspection of the Aft Engine Mount Retainers to be
accomplished within the threshold and interval mentioned in the PLANNING INFORMATION paragraph
1.E.
Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin will allow an early detection of any potential damage
on the Aft Mount Retainers and will avoid additional heavy maintenance operation. This repetitive
inspection is required up to the availability of the final fix solution.
The Operational/Maintenance Consequences of this Service Bulletin are covered by the update of the
affected publications detailed in "PLANNING INFORMATION".

(1) History
During scheduled inspections, some operators have reported damage on the Aft Engine
Mount Inner Retainer Brackets Part Number (PN) 238-0252-505 fitted on A320 Family
Aircraft powered by CFM56-5A/-5B engines.
The Inner Retainer Bracket provides a locking feature to the two nuts of the inner and
outer pins attaching the Aft Links to the Aft Mount Beam (also named Aft Engine Mount).
The same Retainer is used for the three Link Assemblies of the Aft Engine Mount. In
case of broken Inner Retainer Bracket, the locking feature is lost and knowing that these
Nuts are not self-locked, they could become loose. Subsequently, the Pins can also
loosen and the Aft Mount Link would be no longer secured to the Aft Engine Mount. In
this condition, the certification loads cannot be sustained anymore.

The outcome of investigations confirmed that the Retainer damage is due to the fatigue
cracking mechanism resulting from the dynamic effect of Engine vibrations.
On March 2013, the Alert Operators Transmission (AOT) A71N001-12 and UTAS
AEROSTRUCTURES Service Bulletin No. RA32071-146, rendered mandatory by EASA
Airworthiness Directive (AD) No. 2015-0021, requested one time inspection for damaged
Inner Retainer Brackets and the replacement of nonconforming "Dull" surface finish
Retainers by the "Bright" surface finish Retainers. The nonconforming "Dull" surface
finish was more prone to pitting corrosion and which facilitated crack initiation.
However the main cause of crack initiation remains the vibration dynamic effect that
affects both Retainers with "Dull" and "Bright" surface finishes. The nonconforming "Dull"
surface’s pitting corrosion is an aggravating factor.
In addition the UTAS AEROSTRUCTURES Service Bulletin No. RA32071-160 was

published to advise repetitive inspections of the affected Aft Engine Mount Retainer
Brackets.
In 2015, the manufacturer UTAS AEROSTRUCTURES has introduced the "Rev. H"
ensuring the surface finish of maximum 32 Roughness Average (RA) as per design. The
identification with ’-505’ and a manufacture date have been engraved to the part.
This results from another issue of nonconforming batch not complying with a surface
finish of max 32 RA, which showed a smoother surface finish than the "dull" parts of the
past, and a detailed inspection cannot allow its identification and the removal out of

Retainers to be accomplished within the threshold and interval mentioned in the
PLANNING INFORMATION paragraph 1.E.

Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin will allow an early detection of

any potential damage on the Aft Mount Retainers and will avoid additional heavy
maintenance operation. This repetitive inspection is required up to the availability of the
final fix solution.

(a) Check the existing torque by turning the nuts counter-clockwise slowly in the
removal direction until the point of torque release.
NOTE: Check the torque of the nuts Item (10) and (11), by using a torque
wrench with an open-end type adapter or a torque wrench with a
socket. The socket can be no longer than 51.51 mm (2.04 in.).
(b) Re-torque the nut Item (10) to match the ink lines and read the torque. The torque
value must be between 10.85 m.daN (80.00 lbf.ft) and 12.88 m.daN (95.00 lbf.ft).
NOTE: Make sure the pin head is aligned with the slot in the retainer prior
to re-torque.
(c) Re-torque the nut Item (11) to match the ink lines and read the torque. The torque
to re-torque.
(d) If the nut torque is incorrect contact AIRBUS for reporting purpose.

SB Reporting status
This Service Bulletin will only be incorporated into affected customized Maintenance and Flight
Operations Products if it is duly reported to Airbus.
General information
The SB Reporting policy is published in ISI 00.00.00135. This document provides information regarding:
the SB Reporting means and benefits, the update of customized Maintenance Products and customized
Flight Operations Products.
If this Service Bulletin has an operational impact, refer to paragraph "Flight Operations Products" for
further information on the update of affected Flight Operations Products.
SB Reporting procedure
Standard practice to report SB is to use the online reporting application on AirbusWorld.
Refer to ISI 00.00.00179:
