The pattern consists of 20 pages, it contains a detailed description

of the process, step-by-step crafting photographs, assembly of the
details and decoration of the toy.

Skill level - intermediate.

The pattern does not explain basic and advanced stitches. Basic
crochet skills are expected.

Size
The finished toy is approx. 7 inches high on the condition of using
specified materials.

Materials and tools

Yarn of an average thickness (4 PLY): grey, white, blue, yellow and orange
colors. (Pink yarn on the photo is for a hippo girl.)

I used:
«YarnArt Jeans» yarn (160m/50g, 55% cotton/45% polyacryl)
colors: 01 – white, 33 - blue , 35 – yellow, 77 – orange.
«Alize Cotton Gold» yarn (330m/100g, 55% cotton/45% polyacryl)
87 – grey color.

Stuffing material for toys, for example, fiberfill.

Black DMC embroidery floss.

Crochet hook matching the yarn. I used 2 mm crochet hook (US: B, UK: 14)

Clear glue for gluing eyes to the toy.

Sewing needle to sew the details and embroider.

Some pins to fix the details.

Scissors.

6mm eyes for toys or half beads.

15-20mm flat buttons for soles so that the toy can stand on its own. Instead of

buttons you can use coins or round pieces of plastic.

Pink dry pastel, chalk or eye shadows for toning. Also a brush or sponge for

applying toning (optional)

Abbreviations
In order to not lose
track of the number of
MR — magic ring (instead of magic ring, you may work
worked stitches in each
2 chain stitches and crochet into the 2-d round, use a stitch
stitch from the hook)

The toy is crocheted with yarn of several colors. I used a method of changing a thread
color using slip stitches and lifting loops. But if you want, you may use more simple way to
change the color, which is shown at the picture below.

Hippo
Arms (2 pieces)
Start crocheting with white yarn.

Round 1: 6sc in MR (6)

Round 2: 6inc (12)

Round 3 (working in BLO): 12sc (12)

Change the color to the grey one — join thread using sl st.
Cut the white yarn, fasten and hide yarn tail.

We are going to alternate sc and BLO sc in the next round.

Round 4: ch, (sc, BLO sc)*6 (12)

Continue crocheting in spiral.

Rounds 5-7: 12sc (3 rounds) (12)

Round 8: 10sc, dec (11)

Rounds 9-10: 11sc (2 rounds) (11)

Round 11: 9sc, dec (10)

Rounds 12-13: 10sc (2 rounds) (10)

Stuff only bottom of the arm and do not stuff the upper
part. This way the arm doesn't stick out too much after
sewing it to the body.

Round 14: 8sc, dec (9)

Rounds 15-16: 9sc (2 rounds) (9)

Round 17: 7sc, dec (8)

Rounds 18-19: 8sc (2 rounds) (8)

Fold the part in half, connecting the upper edges and work
3sc through both edges. Cut off yarn.

Make two arms.

Legs (2 pieces)
Start crocheting with white yarn.

Round 1: 6sc in MR (6)

Round 2: 6inc (12)

Round 3: (inc, sc)*6 (18)

Round 4 (working in BLO): 18sc (18)

Change the color to the grey one — join

thread using sl st. Cut the white yarn,
fasten and hide yarn tail.

We are going to alternate sc and BLO sc in

Continue crocheting in spiral.

Rounds 6-9: 18sc (4 rounds) (18)

Before you continue crocheting the leg, put a

flat button inside. Use buttons that are
slightly smaller than the sole, so that they fit
inside. You can use coins or round pieces of
plastic instead of buttons.

Change the color to the blue one — join thread

using sl st, leaving a long tail of blue thread in
the beginning of the round. Cut the grey yarn,
fasten and hide yarn tail.

Round 10: ch, 18sc, sl st (18)

Let's make a beautiful bottom edge of the

pants. Work crochet embroidery between 9-
th (grey) and 10-th (blue) rounds, using the
long tail of blue thread, which you left in the
beginning of the round.

Crochet one leg, cut the yarn and hide yarn tail. Crochet another leg, don't cut the yarn.
From this place you will continue to crochet the body. The stitch marker goes through
the back.

Body
Work 6 ch and join another leg using sl st.

Round 1: ch, 18sc around one leg, 6sc in chain, 18sc around
another leg, 6sc in chain (48)

Continue crocheting in spiral.

Round 2: 17sc, inc, 6sc, inc, 23sc (50)

Stuff the body while crocheting.

Change the color to the white one — join thread using sl st.
Do not cut the blue yarn. (Next we change a thread color
similarly.)

Round 3: ch, 50cs (50)

Round 4: 18sc, inc, 6sc, inc, 24sc (52)

Round 5: 52sc (52)

Change the color to the blue one.

Round 6: ch, 52sc (52)

Rounds 7-8: 52sc (2 rounds) (52)

Change the color to the white one.

Align the beginning of the round to the middle of the back.

Work or loose as many stitches as you need to place the stitch
marker in the middle of the back. (I didn’t need.)

Joining the arms.

Round 27: 7sc, 3sc together with arm*, 16sc, 3sc together
with another arm*, 7sc (36)

*3sc together with arm — it means, that you work together

two layers — one of arm and one of previous round, grabbing
with the hook a stitch of arm and a stitch of body. You work 3
such stitches.

Round 28: (4sc, dec)*6 (30)

Round 29: 30sc (30)

Cut off yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.

Straps
When you were crocheting the body, you worked the 23-th round in BLO. So there are
unworked front loops left, which we will use for joining straps.
Determine symmetrically the attachment points of the straps - the distance between them is
8-9 stitches. In front attach white yarn in the place where the first strap will be attached.
Work 15ch.

Behind in the place of attachment of a strap work 2 sl st (nearby) and crochet 15 sc in the
chain. Work sl st in the front loop which is the nearest to the place where you joined the yarn.
Cut off yarn, hide yarn tails inside the body.

Make another strap similarly.

Head

Crochet with grey yarn.

Work 7 ch and start crocheting from the 2-nd stitch

from the hook:
Round 1: 5sc, 3sc in the last ch, along the other
side of the chain: 4sc, inc (14)
Round 2: inc, 4sc, 3inc, 4sc, 2inc (20)
Round 3: inc, 5sc, (inc, sc)*3, 4sc, (inc, sc)*2 (26)
Round 4: 2sc, inc, 4sc, (2sc, inc)*3, 4sc,
(2sc, inc)*2 (32)
Round 5: inc, 3sc, 4sc, (inc, 3sc)*3, 4sc,
(inc, 3sc)*2 (38)

Rounds 6-7: 38sc (2 rounds) (38)

Round 8: dec, 3sc, 4sc, (3sc, dec)*3, 4sc,
(dec, 3sc)*2 (32)

Round 9: 32sc (32)

Align the beginning of the round to the middle of bottom

of the head. Work as many stitches as you need. I
worked 7sc.

Round 10: 10sc, FLO 12inc, 10sc (44)

Rounds 13-20: 52sc (8 rounds) (52)

If you use safety eyes, put them now. I placed the eyes
in 10-th round so that the distance between them is 15-
16 stitches.

Stuff the head while crocheting.

Round 21: (11sc, dec)*4 (48)

Tighten the opening. Cut the yarn leaving a long tail for eyes tightening.

Ears (2 pieces)
Crochet with grey yarn.
Round 1: 6sc in MR (6)
Round 2: 6inc (12)
Round 3: 12sc, sl st (12)
Tighten MR firmly so that there is no hole in the
middle.
Cut off yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.

Fold the ear giving a «droplet» form to it and fix

it with a couple of stitches.

Make two pieces.

Tail
Join the grey yarn where the tail will be situated. And tie approx. 20 knots. Cut yarn
ends. The tail is ready.

Assembly and decoration

Pin the head to the body. Place the head symmetrically and tilt the muzzle down (look at the
photo below). Then sew the head with the yarn tail which you left while crocheting the body.

Pin the ears to the head in desired position. Then sew

them.

Tighten eye sockets with the yarn tail you left while crocheting the head. Mark the eye
sockets using pins. I placed the eyes in 10-th round so that the distance between them is
15-16 stitches.
First bring the needle out under the muzzle (where the head is attached to the neck). Then
bring the needle out from the outside corner of the first eye. Make a little stitch (equal
1sc) into the inner corner of the eye bringing the needle out under the muzzle again.
Tighten yarn lightly to create a small deepening where the eye will be placed.

Make another tightening for the second eye. Fasten and cut off yarn, hide yarn end.
Glue or sew eyes.

Embroider eyelashes and nostrils with black DMC

floss (using 2-3 strands).

Tone the cheeks with pink dry pastel if desired.

Flower

Crochet with white yarn.

Work in MR: (4ch, tr, 4ch, sl st)*5

Tighten MR firmly.

Embroider the middle of the flower with

blue yarn.

Duck swimming circle

Swimming circle
Crochet with yellow yarn.
Work 10ch and make sl st in the first chain.
Let’s crochet a long «cylinder».
Round 1: ch, 10sc in chain (10)
Continue crocheting in spiral:
10sc (approx. 60 rounds)
If the crocheting is not tight enough or keeps its
shape poorly, you may stuff the circle a little bit (I
didn’t).
Try on the circle to the hippo around the waist. If
it’s small, work a few more rouds.
Sew the circle ends to each other carefully.

Duck head
Crochet with yellow yarn.
Round 1: 6sc in MR (6)

Round 2: 8sc, sl st
Cut off yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the beak to the head.

Let’s make the eyes. You may glue or sew small black
beads or half beads. Also you may embroider eyes with
black DMC floss. I used 3mm half beads.

Sew the duck head to the swimming circle.
