ABSTRACT
In this paper, we propose using ZigBee for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Most of
the accidents these days are caused because of drivers not knowing the upcoming traffic
hurdles like curves, traffic signals, railway lines and etc. If drivers come to know about the
upcoming signals, curves, and railways lines etc the accidents can be avoided. The aim is to
provide drivers with intelligent roads so that they can receive the information about the
curves and the traffic signals ahead. After receiving the information about the signals ahead,
drivers will be careful; this will help avoid the road accidents. Many researches are taking
place in the world in the field of ITS and many useful systems are also built but no system is
built using this remarkable ZigBee technology. ZigBee is low cost as compared to other short
range wireless technologies which will help reduce the total cost of the system, enabling this
system to be deployed in developing countries as well.

INTRODUCTION

The term Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) refers to information and

communication technology, applied to transport

 infrastructure and vehicles, that improve transport outcomes such as:

 Transport Productivity

 Travel Reliability

 Transport Safety Informed Travel Choices Social Equity Loc

 Environmental Performance

 Network Operation Resilience

 Converter

 Capest Room

 Camera

 Detection

4
NECESSITY OF ITS

India going through a period of drastic change in the transportation area due to: Rapidly
growing economy.

• Insufficient and inadequate public transportation system.

• Rising vehicle ownership levels
• Traffic congestion, insufficient road development growing number of vehicles.
• Low speed, increased accident rates, increased fuel consumption pollution.
 Impossible to build enough new roads or to meet the demand.and increased

5
TYPES OF ITS

Advanced public transport system (APTS):

APTS technologies are a collection of technologies that increase the efficiency and safety of
public transportation systems and offer users greater access to information on system
operations.

Advanced traveller information system (ATIS):

Advanced travellers information systems (ATIS), a part of new technology applications in

transportation, provide accurate and timely information that help travellers to select
routes, times of travel and travel modes.

Advanced Traffic Management System(ATMS):

This system can benefit the publicwith improved traffic and public safety. by monitoring the
flow of traffic and making appropriate decisions in a timely manner.

Automated highway system (AHS) :

An automated highway system (AHS) refers to a specially equipped highway lane in which
vehicles. are automatically controlled; that is, the vehicles. steering, brakes and throttle are
controlled by the system, not the driver. Vehicle-mounted sensors are used to judge the
vehicle's position by visual data on the lane marking.

Advanced warning system (AWS):

This system addresses the present accident caused when traffic slows down abruptly due to
road conditions, forcing the driver to apply brakes and if they cannot apply brake in advance,
it may cause crash to other vehicles and at the same time vehicle behind may crash into this
vehicle. This leads to chain reaction of accidents.

6
Incident management system (IMS):

They may offer real time information about traffic conditions, such as variable message signs
to wam of accidents or other delays. ITS controls the flow of traffic via traffic signals, or by
opening and closing special gated lanes lanes that allow commuters to access additional traffic
lanes in one direction or the other, depending on the time of day, and the direction of the
heaviest commuter traffic flow.

Electronic toll collection system(ETCS):

ETC is based on vehicle roadside communication system, more precisely, it is an application

of electronic signature detection to passenger and commercial vehicle traffic for the purpose of
collecting tolls.

OBJECTIVES

 Address growing need of

 Traffic Monitoring
 GSC-21 VIENNA, AUSTRIA
 Energy consumptions,
 Safety on roads,
 Pollution on road,
 Overcrowded roads,
 Sufficient parking infrastructure,
 Reduce Travel time
 Ease of travel in public transports etc.
 Evolve a Communication Network to address the developing Transportation ICT
based application requirements for optimized resource management of time, travel,
energy beating congestions and socio economic Development

APPLICATIONS OF ITS

(1) Electronic Toll Collection :

Today, most toll roads are equipped with an electronic toll-collection system, like E-ZPass,
that detects and processes tolls electronically.
 traffic monitoring camera
 The E-Pass Process display
E-Pass uses a vehicle mounted transponder that is activated by an antenna on a toll lane. Your
account information is stored in the transponder. The antenna identifies your transponder and
reads your account information. The amount of the toll is deducted and you're allowed
through.
(2) Emergency vehicle notification systems:
Intelligent transportation systems particularly the FCD (Floating Car Data) model can also be
used to provide advance warning to motorists of traffic jams, accidents and other emergency
situations. This system can then provide alternative routes or recommendations to motorists
so as to avoid congestion and travel delays.
(3) Cordon zones with congestion pricing:
With the intelligent transportation system, cordon zones can also be enforced where mass
transportation systems are available and their encouraged. use Cordon systems make it
possible to collect taxes from those entering city areas with high traffic while encouraging the
use of mass transit. Congestion pricing gantry at North Bridge Road, Singapore.CZoneENDS
Sign indicate the boundary of the congestion charge area
(4) Automatic Road Enforcement: A traffic enforcement camera system, consisting of a
camera and a vehicle-monitoring device, is used to detect and identify vehicles disobeying a
speed limit or some other road legal requirement and automatically ticket offenders based on
the license plate number. Traffic tickets are sent by mail. For Exam :o Speed cameras identify
speed limit. o Red light cameras detect vehicles that cross a stop line’s Bus lane cameras
identify vehicles traveling in lanes reserved for buses.
(5) Collision Avoidance Systems: Intersection Collision Warning Obstacle Detection Lane
Change assistance Lane Departure Warning

• Better traffic flow.

• Lower travel cost.

• Better environmental quality.

• Increased business activity.

• Greater user acceptance.

• Better travel information.

15
DISADVANTAGES

• Difficult to use in mixed traffic.

• Preliminary difficulties in understanding.

• ITS equipments costly.

• The control system software could be hacked by hackers.

16
CONCLUSION

• ITS represent the next step in the evolution of a nation's entire transportation system
Traffic congestions, rate of road accidents, wastage of fuels are decreased to a large
extend

• Transportation has become a safer and efficient mode

• Hence with much more interest and advanced research in the field of IT S, it can be
implemented in our country and can prove to be the solution of the traffic problems

• including traffic congestion, air pollution and traffic accidents.

• •This system will give a high progress in the devolvement of our country.
