Dead Stars, written by Paz Márquez Benitez and published in the Philippine Herald in
1925, was the first Filipino modern English-language short tale. She was part of the first
generation of Filipinos to be educated in the United States, where English was the medium
of instruction. The narrative is essentially a collection of the difficult situations that every
man must face in his life. Alfredo felt caught between doing what was right and doing what
he really wanted to do. The narrative is about a love that you never anticipate, a love that
you discover at the end Alfredo loves in his true love, but he doesn't expect his love for Julia
to fade after many years. Alfredo Salazar is the central character in this short novel, which
centers on his love life. He is a man who believes in real love and want to discover
happiness as a result of it. Esperanza is the first lady he falls in love with.
Esperanza is the first woman whom Alfredo fell in love but his love for the lady fades as
Julia came. Alfredo is a lawyer and he was the main character of the story. Esperanza
considers him as the love of her life. Esperanza was a stunning, graceful, quiet woman who
stood out from the crowd. She adored Alfredo and entrusted him with her entire heart.
They were engaged for four years and are planning to get married in just a few months.
Both of their families are familiar with one another, and as a result, they begin a loving
connection. Their relationship started off with a lot of excitement, love, and happiness.
However, like with most long-term relationships, their feelings for one other evolve with
time. While Julia Salas is the Judge's sister-in-law, and Alfredo's father's acquaintance. Julia
is a positive and upbeat individual with her own goals and ambitions.
One day, Carmen and Julian have a conversation regarding on Alfredo and Esperanza’s
engagement and wedding. Carmen asked why does Alfredo seemed not ready or even
having a firm decision about their wedding. But Don Julian answered that it is mostly
normal for those partners who are in long-term relationship, he didn’t think that something
wrong is happening between the two. There were invited for six weeks in the house of
Martinez that was occupied by Judge Del Valle. Then, there he meet Judge Del Valle’s sister-
in-law Julia. At first he was mistaken of her name and thought that she was Judge’s sister so
he is calling the young woman as Ms. Del Valle but Don Julian later tell Alfredo that she is
not the sister like he was pertaining. He felt that he needs to apologize for what happen to
the young lady.
When Alfredo first sees her, he is immediately drawn to her. On his father's visit to her,
he strikes up a discussion with her and is drawn to her allure. He's so enamored with
Esperanza that he doesn't tell her about his engagement. There were times that when they
go to church Alfredo will not wait for Esperanza anymore because he wanted to saw Julia
more often. Julia's family was invited to his family's coconut farm near their beach one day.
It's an opportunity for them to spend some quality time together, but it's also the time for
them to say their goodbyes. Julia intends to leave town and return to her hometown.
Alfredo's heart was broken, and he was more bewildered than ever. He was thinking of
canceling the wedding and choose Julia over his fiance but what other people say also
matters to him.
Alfredo dealt a double blow upon his return home. He overhears Esperanza and her
friend discussing devotion and commitment. Alfredo detects a yearning to converse. He
believes that there is a cause for desiring and that honesty is preferable than dishonesty.
Esperanza quickly admits that she was aware of his romance with Julia. She urges him to call
off the wedding in order to satisfy his passion and heart's pleasure. The wedding, on the
other hand, goes on as planned, and Alfred yields to logic. He realizes that everything he
went through together with Julia has fallen to just a memory. Alfredo travels to Julia's
hometown on a work trip. Alfredo comes across Julia while he is there. He has never
forgotten his affections for her, but he has come to terms with his marriage to Esperanza
over time. He quickly notices that nothing is the same as it was before. Julia has also
changed and has lost something.
