What’s In
Medical and Allied Health Professions

The medical community could be a group of people qualified to practice

medicine. Allied health professions, on the opposite hand, are lines of labor that also
accommodate healthcare, but are distinct from medicine. they need distinct and
specialized knowledge and skills that actively work with people accessing health and
disability that are offered services across a spread of settings. These professions
include clinical laboratory or medical technology, physical therapy, occupational
therapy, dietetic services, medical record personnel, radiologic services, speech
language pathology and audiology, and respiratory therapy. Allied health
professionals provide services and have interaction in activities which include:
a. Prevention
b. Assessment/evaluation
c. Identification
d. Treatment
e. Rehabilitation/habilitation
f. Advocacy
g. Promotion of health and well-being
h. Education
i. Research

What’s New
Allied Health Professions Overview

The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions defines allied health as

the segment of the health care field “that delivers services involving the identification,
evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services;
and rehabilitation and health systems management.”

There are five million allied health care providers in the United States, who work
in more than 80 different professions and represent approximately 60% of all health
care providers. The number of allied health care providers is likely to grow as jobs in
the health care industry will grow from 15.6 million to 19.8 million between 2010 and
2020. An increasing number of those jobs will require people with bachelor’s and
graduate degrees.

Some allied health care providers work collaboratively with other providers,
including physicians, nurses, dentists, and pharmacists. They may play roles in
evaluating and assessing a patient’s needs, keeping the physician and others

3 NegOr_Q4_Health10_Module4b_v2
informed of the patient’s progress and caring for the patient. Others work
independently as specialists in exercise, nutrition, health education, speech, and daily
function.

The allied health professions fall into two broad categories: technicians
(assistants) and therapists/technologists. Technicians are trained to perform
procedures, and their education lasts less than two years. They are required to work
under the supervision of technologists or therapists. Cardiovascular technicians,
ophthalmic medical technicians and medical assistants are examples of careers in this
category.

The educational process for therapists or technologists is more intensive and

includes acquiring procedural skills. In addition, students learn to evaluate patients,
diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and understand the rationale behind
various treatments to judge their appropriateness and potential side effects.
Educational curricula teach students to evaluate patients’ responses to therapy and
make appropriate decisions about continued treatment or modification of treatment
plans. Anesthesiologist assistant, neurodiagnostic technologist and pathologists’
assistant are three examples of allied health careers in this category.

The following professions are included in allied health:

• Athletic training • Nuclear medicine technology

• Audiology • Occupational therapy
• Cardiovascular perfusion technology • Physical therapy
• Cytotechnology • Physician assistant
• Dental hygiene • Radiation therapy technology
• Diagnostic medical sonography • Radiography
• Dietetics • Rehabilitation counseling
• Emergency medical sciences • Respiratory therapy
• Health administration • Respiratory therapy technology
• Health information management • Speech-language pathology
• Medical technology

Prior to this pandemic, the demand for health professionals really needs to be
filled up, since this is one of the most essential sectors in the government that ensures
untiring service to people. With this current situation, our country is facing badly the
demand that grows double or triple since human resource on health is of shortage.
Facilities and equipment on health are very exhausted and not enough to cover all
demands. What could be the best strategy to strengthen the need of this time? Well,
based on this illustration, something must be done in both parties, the government,
and the people.

The median, the maximum, the minimum, and the range

• Salary Range
Health and Medical salaries in Philippines range from 13,900 PHP per month
(minimum average salary) to 199,000 PHP per month (maximum average
salary, actual maximum is higher)

• Median Salary
The median salary is 71,900 PHP per month, which means that half (50%) of
people working in Health and Medical are earning less than 71,900 PHP while
the other half are earning more than 71,900 PHP. The median represents the
middle salary value. Generally speaking, you would want to be on the right side
of the graph with the group earning more than the median salary.
• Percentiles
Closely related to the median are two values: the 25th and the 75th percentiles.
Reading from the salary distribution diagram, 25% of people working in Health
and Medical are earning less than 38,600 PHP while 75% of them are earning
more than 38,600 PHP. Also from the diagram, 75% of people working in Health

Allied health professionals serve as the backbone of the healthcare. They
support a wide range of clinical contribution and distinctive restoration administrations
for patients; exercises going from essential to intense consideration, and in-patient or
short-term settings. They additionally serve in different abilities to help the clinical
calling.

As current medical care administrations keep on developing, the strain from

people in general, the public authority, and different partners locally to convey better
medical services support develops. In such manner, coordinated effort among doctors,
nurture, and unified wellbeing experts is a higher priority than any time in recent
memory. They should cooperate to expand their assets to give available, opportune,
and quality consideration for their patients. By working with clinical experts in the ID,
evaluation, counteraction, and treatment of sicknesses and incapacities, united
wellbeing specialists make a huge commitment to the nature of medical care
conveyance. Hence, they are a fundamental piece of the medical care framework.
