BINOMIAL THEOREM
BINOMIAL EXPANSION USING College Algebra
PASCAL’S TRIANGLE

(a + b)n

Example: (𝑥 + 𝑦)2 = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2

Note: The number of terms in the expansion is (n + 1)

BINOMIAL THEOREM
BINOMIAL EXPANSION College Algebra
BY PASCAL’S TRIANGLE

PASCAL’S TRIANGLE

- used to determine (a + b)0

the coefficients of the (a + b)1
terms in a binomial
expansion. (a + b)2
(a + b)3
(a + b)4
(a + b)5
(a + b)6

BINOMIAL THEOREM
BINOMIAL EXPANSION College Algebra
BY PASCAL’S TRIANGLE

(a + b)3 = 1 a3 b 0 + 3 a2 b 1 + 3 a 1 b 2 + 1 a0 b 3
2
= a3 + 3 a b + 3 a b 2
+ b3
Properties:
1. The number of terms in the expansion is (n + 1)
2. The first term is an and the last term is bn.
3. The exponent of a descends linearly from n to 0.
4. The exponent of b ascends linearly from 0 to n.
5. The sum of the exponents of a and b in any of the
terms is equal to n.

& rth term of (a + b)n

𝒏!
rth term of (a + b)n = 𝒂𝒏−𝒓+𝟏 𝒃𝒓−𝟏
𝒏−𝒓+𝟏 ! 𝒓−𝟏 !

e.g. 𝒂+𝒃 𝟑
= 𝒂𝟑 + 𝟑𝒂𝟐 𝒃 + 𝟑𝒂𝒃𝟐 + 𝒃𝟑
Technique:
1. The number of terms in the expansion is (n + 1).
2. In the rth term, b has an exponent (𝑟 − 1).
3. The sum of the exponents of a and b in any of the terms is equal to n.
𝒏!
4. The coefficient of any term is
(𝐞𝐱𝐩 𝒐𝒇 𝒂)! (𝐞𝐱𝐩 𝒐𝒇 𝒃)!

𝑛
for middle term: Set r = + 1 for even value of n
