Title: Specification for Sealing Elements
Prepared By: James Chambers Approved By: Tom Bailey
1. SCOPE
a. This specification describes the service conditions for Rotating Control
Device sealing elements.
2. SERVICE CONDITIONS
a. See attached chart for fluid compatibility.
b. See attached chart for sizing information.
c. Misalignment – Land Rigs
i. The sealing element has a 2 maximum angular misalignment
condition before detrimental effects are seen.
ii. The sealing element has a ½” maximum offset misalignment
condition (off center) before detrimental effects are seen.
d. Misalignment – Offshore Rigs
i. Maximum angular misalignment of 4 inches for every 10 feet
(approximately 1.9 degrees) of depth to the RCD (the distance
from the rotary table to the top of the RCD flange), with a
maximum misalignment not to exceed 16 inches.
e. A maximum tripping speed of 1 foot/second (90 seconds for a triple)
should be observed at all times.
f. Sharp kellys, hard band, tong marks ID grooves, and other sharp edges
should be avoided.
g. Down hole tools and collars should not be pulled through the rubber.
3. TEMPERATURE RATINGS
a. The temperature rating of the rubber is shown in the attached chart.
b. Sealing elements should not be used frozen.
4. STORAGE
a. Sealing elements should be stored in a location that does not allow direct
sunlight or reach temperatures above 90 deg. F.
b. Sealing elements should be stored in a location that does not allow
exposure to high levels of ozone such as welding areas.
c. Sealing elements should be stored in a location that does not allow contact
with harmful fluids.
d. Sealing elements must be protected from UV light.
e. Sealing elements made of polyurethane must not be exposed to prolonged
high humidity.
f. Should any sealing element freeze during storage due to cold
temperatures, it must be completely thawed out prior to use.
i. This may take up to 6 hours depending upon the thickness of the
elastomer.
ii. Before use, the sealing element should be brought to
approximately 50°F.

5. SHELF LIFE
a. Shelf life is given in Table 7 for minimum recommended conditions.
b. Other storage conditions as shown in Table 6 can affect the shelf life.
TABLE 1 - COMPATABILITY
