Tenses

There are three main tenses:


I, The Present II, The past and III, The Future
S- subject, O-object,
 V1: Base Form  of  Verb/ 1st form of verb
 V2: Past Simple/ 2nd form of verb
 V3: Past Participle/ 3rd form of verb

The tense of a verb shows the time of action or event.


PRESENT TENSE CHART
1. Simple Present I study
(Action is mentioned simply)
2. Present Continuous I am studying
(Action is mentioned as incomplete
or continuous)
3. Present Perfect I have studied
(Action is mentioned as finished,
complete or perfect)
4. Present Perfect Continuous I have been studying
(Action is going on continuously and
not completed at this present
moment)

Simple Present tense uses:


1: We use the present simple when something is generally or always true.

 People need food.


 Two and two make four.

2: Similarly, we use this tense for a situation that we think is more or less
permanent.

 Where do you live?


 She works in a bank.
 I do not like mushrooms.

3: The next use is for habits or things that we do regularly.


 I play tennis every Tuesday.
 I do not travel very often.

4: We can also use the present simple for short actions that are happening
now. This is often used with sports commentary.

 He takes the ball, he runs down the wing, and he scores!

5: We use the present simple to talk about the future when we are discussing a
timetable or a fixed plan.

 School begins at nine tomorrow.


 What time does the film start?

Note: here we use:

Subject+ V1(s or es)+ object

he, she, it------is

we, you, they ------are

Present Continuous tense

1: We use the present continuous for things that are happening at the moment
of speaking.

 I am working.
 Julie is sleeping.

2: We can also use this tense for other kinds of temporary situations.

 I am reading a really great book.


 She is staying with her friend for a week.

Note: Here we use:

Subject+ is/am/are+ V1+ing+ object

he, she, it------ is

we, you, they------are

Present Perfect Tense

1. The present perfect tense denotes an action that has just been completed.

 I have written my essay.


 He has worked the sum.

2. The present perfect tense is also used instead of past tense , to represent a
past action as continuing to the present.
 We have lived here ten years ( and we are still living here).

Note: Here we use:

Subject+ has/have+V3+ object

I, we, you, they------ have

he, she, it-------- has

Present perfect continuous tense:

We use the Present Perfect Continuous tense to talk about an action that


started in the past and is continuing now. This is often used with for or since.

 I have been reading for two hours. (I am still reading now.)


 We have been studying since nine o'clock. (We're still studying now.)
 How long have you been learning English? (You are still learning now.)

We often use for and since with perfect tenses:

 We use for to talk about a period of time: three hours, two months, one


decade
 We use since to talk about a point in past time: 9 o'clock, 1st January,
Monday
Examples:
 I have been studying for three hours.
 I have been watching TV since seven pm.
 Tara has not been feeling well for two weeks.
 Tara has not been visiting us since March.

He, she, it--------has been
