INTRODUCTION

The knowledge which gained from four years of school education is the step

in shaping students and it is inadequate in terms of obtaining moral responsibilities

and values, which are highly required before undertaking the actual battles outside

the four-corner room. Thus, to ensure that the learnings are being applied and

turned into skills, OJT or the On-the-Job Training is the way to perceive these. The

On-the-Job Training is the practical approach to procure new competencies, work

values, skills and expertise needed for employment or in the working environment.

The workplace or the institution we are endorsed serve as our venue to learn,

explore new experiences and develop ourselves into better.

The COAFTC (City Organic Agri-Fishery Tourism Complex) in Bislig City is

an agricultural center that caters tourism activities as well as trainings and

seminars for farmers, students and out of school youth who were engaged in

farming or agricultural activities like agri-business and it stand as the partner

agency of Northeastern Mindanao State University for student trainees. This

institution was funded by the Department of Agriculture, provincial and local

government of Bislig, Surigao Del Sur intended for agricultural projects of the

locality, as the leading organic city in the Philippines in support to the goals of

providing and ensuring food security through sustainable farming. The COAFTC is

also a school demo farm that conducts TESDA trainings related to agriculture such

as Animal production, Organic Agriculture and Agri- Crops production. They also

rear livestock, large and small ruminants and poultry. They monitor and guarantee
biosecurity measures to ensure the safety of domesticated animals and to

minimize such complications like spreading diseases, market and economic loss

resulting into food shortage, scarcity of market supplies and the health of people

after consumption.

Overall, On- the- Job Training becomes an avenue in training student to

become fully equipped workers and employees of an institution that could become

a leader in the future. Accepting On-the-Job trainees can truly be helpful not only

to the student trainees but also to the partner agency that provides opportunities

for this type of learning. There is truly wisdom in frontlines, as they say that

experience is the best teacher. This training can be an investment and an edge

towards expertise in the field of agriculture and will be valuable to the institution

later on. And as a student trainee, the On-the- Job Training is a powerful tool that

connects the relationship between the acquired knowledge to actual experiences

in instilling different skills and competencies that can be useful not only on the

working environment but also in our daily lives.

2
OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the On- the-Job Training is to equip the students into

the actual workplace environment in terms of skills and knowledge. This will

provide the student trainee relevant working experience in the chosen field which

the agriculture may help them uplift the better version of their selves as an

agriculturist in the future.

Specifically, the trainees aimed to:

1. Acquire knowledge and practice the proper management of growing

commodities suitable for hydroponics.

2. Undertake strategies of producing high quality livestock and poultry for industrial

use and consumption.

3. Master the process and procedures involved in vermiculture, biofertilizer making

and feed formulation and their importance to crops and domestic animals.

ON- THE- JOB TRAINING ACTIVITIES

A. ORIENTATION

Before the day of duty, Glorina Espin, head of City organic Agri-fishery

tourism complex (COAFTC) oriented the student trainees about the mission,

vision, goal and roles. And also, sir Joar Aleria discuss the vermiculture,

hydroponics, pest and disease, the proper harvest of plants and selecting good

seeds. They reminded the trainees to be polite in asking if they were already in the

unit area.

Ma'am Archie Polina introduced the assigned area of the group and it was

a one-week work rotation within a month. The first group was assigned in

landscaping, bio fertilizer, root crops & cereals; second, in Organic concoction,

vermiculite, seedling preparation and HVC planting; third, in Hydroponics, south

vegetables, fishery and processing; fourth, in the 5s Good housekeeping, road side

beautification; fifth, in livestock-free range chicken/Goat and north vegetables,

TESDA and Feed mill/Rice. The trainees were required to wear personal protective

equipment (PPE) like gloves, foot wear and proper clothing. Sir Joar Alaria told us

that we should have an initiative and that work should be done without any

command. He also oriented the trainees about the activities in all units assigned

on.

B. 1st Week (February 23, 2022 - March 04, 2022)

Landscaping and Biofertilizer

The assigned trainees in the landscaping and fertilizer unit were tasked to

make a soil media used for planting ornamental plants like Russian Peacock,

Pandakaki and Catchura flower intended for the center island of Bislig in the city

proper. The soil media has a ratio 3:1:1; three sacks for improved or garden soil,

one sack of soil conditioner either carbonized rice hull or cocopeat depending on

the current season of the area and one sack of fertilizer to nourish the plants. The

carbonized rice hull was good to utilize during wet season and the cocopeat was

used during dry season, because it has a good water holding capacity. And as to

fertilizer, the student trainees used biofertilizer because it improves the soil texture

and structure as well as it can sustain the nutrients of the soil and able to stabilize

the carbon and nitrogen ratio of the soil.

6
In order to achieve good result of soil media and to cater the optimum

growth and development of the plants, the three components must be sieved to

achieved the purity of the soil. The next procedure to undertake was to ensure the

proper mixture of the components, the trainees assured that these three were

properly mixed to improve the soil structure and texture. The soil media were

bagged in the polyethylene bags prior to planting. The media that the student

trainee made were enough to bag 200 polyethylene bags.

Fig. 2(A) Sieving of soil media (B) Mixing of soil media

On the other day, the trainees were assigned to set bed for biofertilizer

processing. For bed setting, the first step was to introduce IMO (Indigenous

Microorganism), to ensure that beneficial microorganisms were present and

7
facilitates microbial activity during decomposing. Next was to set the main raw

materials for bed such as grass, animal waste and other decomposed materials

with the application of concoction, vermicompost mixed in garden soil and soil

conditioner. The whole process took take 30 days or a month before the

biofertilizer were utilized and applied in the field.

(C) Setting of bedding for biofertilizer

Root Crops & Cereals

In the morning, the trainees sack Adlai, beating Adlai in the north vegetable.

On the side of the feed mill there, the trainees were spreading in Adlai, sifting in

Adlai. In the processing of soybeans, the first thing the trainees did was rub the

soybeans in the palms to get the coat off of them. After that, the trainees sieved

them. Then the trainees washed it thoroughly with water and blend it using the

blender equipment. After that, the trainees sieved it again to separate the milk and

the sepal of the soybeans. After all the separation, the trainees boiled the milk of

8
the soybeans on the stove for a few minutes. It’s already boiled, then the trainees

let it cool down.

C. 2nd Week (March 07, 2022 - March11, 2022)

Organic Concoctions/ Vermiculture

The trainees were assigned in organic concoctions and vermiculture on the

2nd week the first thing they did was picking of vermi, in order to separate it from

compost and to produce vermicast. This activity was very scrutinous work because

it takes time for you to separate the vermi from compost to assure that these could

not hinder the growth of the crops once applied. On the other day, the student

trainees collected substrates (madre de agua, grass) and then shredded the

grasses and legumes using shredder machine as a food and compost bed for

vermi. In making beddings of vermicompost, we must follow the ratio of the

following materials animal manure 35, Grasses 25 and Legumes 25. These are

the following materials that was added layer by layer and wait until 45 days before

adding vermi. After making compost bed for vermi the trainees were appointed to

deleaf the banana trees located along roadside of COAFTC. According to Mr. Joar

Aleria, the unit head of Vermiculture and Hydroponics area, in deleafing banana

trees, there was a need to separate the banana leaves from its plant to prevent the

spread of contagious diseases present to those certain leaves of banana tree. In

addition, banana tree should only have two daughters in every parenting to have

a good production of its fruits. If there were more than two in each parent, the other

suckers must be cut or removed because it can also affect its fruits.

In making concoctions like IMO, FPJ, CALCIUM, OHN and vermitea the first

thing was to prepare all the materials needed for that certain concoction. In

Indigenous Micro Organism (IMO) the trainees cooked rice using non chloride

10
water to avoid arising of bad bacteria instead of a good one. In Fermented Plant

Juice (FPJ) the students chopped all those vegetable plants and add molasses the

same amount for vegetable plant being chopped and covered it using clean manila

paper then it can be harvested after 7days. The same process for Oriental Herbal

Nutrients (OHN), the only difference is that after 3 days it requires an addition of

coconut vinegar conversely proportional to the number of raw materials used and

stored harvested it within 10days before harvesting.

coction making

11
Seedling Preparation and HVC Planting

The trainees were assigned in Seedling preparation and High Value Crops

(HVC) planting and they were required to do the following activities like bagging,

weeding and transplanting of rambutan seedlings using gassitive polyethylene

bags. Fortunately, they planted 300 pieces of rambutan seedlings.

(C) Arranging of seedlings (D) Transplanting of Rambutan seedlings

Fishery/Processing area

First group was assigned at food processing area and they were able to

experienced planting of herbals (variegated oregano, mint) and onion shallots,

while the second group were instructed to plant half tray of Roselle plant, ginger,

lemon grass and then we also experienced how to peel ‘’raw banana, that were

12
used as main ingredient for banana chips, after this process, the peeled banana

were soaked in arnibal having mixture of 1kilo of brown sugar and half pitcher of

warm water used for banana coating before frying. After that the student trainees

labeled and packed the banana chips accordingly.

Further, the other groups were given a task to feed the tilapias in the fishery

area, clean the tubs used in transferring newly hatched fishes. Some members

were directed to clean the soil analysis center as well as the reagent bottles, tools

and other equipment that were found in the said area.

D. 3rd Week (March 14, 2022 - March 19, 2022)

Hydroponics/ South Vegetables

The first group was assigned at hydroponics area at coaftc. The trainees

experienced to conduct a seeds identification of broccoli, pechay, bell pepper,

string beans, eggplants, tomatoes, lettuce (curly type and romaine type), bottle

gourd, cucumber, bitter melon, patula, cabbage, squash and melon. Then a sort

of lecture on how many litters of solution fertilizers should be applied in every

container for lettuce. Used fertilizer on hydrosol-A is 40L, Hydrosol –B is also 40L

then phosphoric acid is equal to 40 L of water, then 5.5 to 5.6 of phosphoric acid

that were put on water sources, for the purpose of neutralizing water then, they

have also two types of pipe for morning and evening distribution of water supply

then the chiller machine which was used to cool-down the water once the water

source is hot.

14
Fig.4(A) Seed identification (B) Fertigation, Hydrosol A & Hydrosol B

Second group on the next session was assigned to hydro open field area,

where we used to experience weeding processes in every plot then make a canal

for water drainage, and they trellising tomato plant. Then on following day, it was

used to harvest soil less lettuce and eggplant. We harvested four rows of lettuce

then harvested eggplant by cutting between its” pungagu’’ between on it to avoid

the faster or direct ratooning and instead can cut it again once it is in rotted point.

Then hand picking or manual picking of pest on broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage

inside the hydro house then lastly hauling of garbage near at the control panel

area.

TESDA assignment

The trainees were assigned to help in filing and printing pertinent papers

and documents for the TESDA student applicants in span for two days. Maam Joy

Ronquillo, the unit head for TESDA in COAFTC instructed the student trainees to

fill up the empty information of the students as one of the requirements provided

by the TESDA before submitting it to the provincial office. The other student

trainees were assigned to help on assisting the TESDA students as in preparing

for the materials needed for their assessment; they also helped the assessor for

Animal production in terms of filming the activities that the students performed

during that day. Some of the student trainees initiated to help in cleaning the

16
surroundings of Bahay- Kubo which serve as the learning center for TESDA in

COAFTC.

Livestock & Free-Range Chicken

The Trainees were assigned in the Livestock Free-range Chicken/Goatery

and Sheep. On the first day, the trainees vaccinated 4 heads of sheep with

Multivitamins A,B-Complex the sheep were injected using a disposable syringe.

Each sheep was injected 5 ml of multivitamins.

The other day around, the trainees were assigned in the goatery, they were

assigned to remove the waste straw of the goat and feed them, they had sacked

17
the goat manure and they were able to collect 30 plus sack of goat manure. Then

in the afternoon session the trainees feed the goats and sheep with the forages

that they have collected. According to the in charge in feeding each goat, they

needed two to three pounds of forages per day, which can be fed free choice or

twice a day.

On the third day, the trainees were assigned in the free-range chicken and

some were assigned in the egg machine. The student trainees fed the chickens

with the feeds provided by the institution. The other members were instructed to

collect the eggs in the egg machine and weigh it using egg weighing scale (not

digital). After that they sorted the eggs according to its sizes; jumbo, extra-large,

large, medium and small. Jumbo eggs weigh about the range of 81 grams above,

extra-large. On the fourth day, the trainees vaccinated 30 heads of chicks were

vaccinated with Multivitamins A, B-Complex this vitamin which contributed a

healthy immune system, as well increasing energy levels and appetite after a

period of stress, the chicks were injected using a disposable syringe. Each chick

was injected 0.3 ml of Complex. The trainees use a COMBINEX Wound Spray so

that they can identify which chicks received vitamins.

North Contouring & North Vegetables

Maam Tuyen, the COAFTC manager decided to divide the groups into two

and assigned the first group to contour the north area of COAFTC in order to plant

coffee and madre de cacao as the contour plant, while the second group were

assigned to help sir Jun Abrea in north vegetable area. The first group was

assigned to weed and clean the area before leveling the land surfaces using the A

frame. Sir Dominguez Viduya explained the function of A- Frame and the

importance of contouring the steep or slope area. The students measured the area

with the interval of 5 meters, some were holing with the deep of 2 ft and a wide of

2 ft for coffee. The madre de cacao plants were used as a furrow plant.

19
(C) North Contouring, Holing and Sticking

On the other hand, the second groups were assigned in the north vegetable

area. On the first day, the trainees were assigned to harvest the cucumber. In the

afternoon, they were tasked in weeding the string beans area. On the second day,

the trainees were assigned to make a hole for the string beans. On the afternoon,

the trainees were assigned to put a bio-fertilizer in a hole. On the third day, the

trainees were assigned to water the cucumber. On the fourth day, the trainees

were tasked to harvest lady fingers. After the harvest, they transplanted the string

beans. On the last day, the trainees were tasked to harvest some cucumber for

the visitors. On the afternoon, they were tasked in weeding the Ampalaya area.

20

Feed mill Area

The student trainees experienced formulating feeds by following the feed

formulation process namely; calculating the CP content needed by the animals,

the present Crude protein in each raw material used, as well as the ratio of Carbon

source and Protein source feeds. After calculating the CP content, the next step

was to check the availability of raw materials in the feed mill area, then next was

to prepare and cook the raw materials that were needed to be cooked and weigh

it according to the ratio in each feed ration of livestock, poultry and fishes, then

mixed the feed using the feed mixer and lastly is to pelletize the feed using the

pelletizer to ensure the palatability of feeds.

21
(E) Sieving of feed ingredients (F) Pelletizing of feeds

The other groups were assigned to introduce the Tricho gramma japonicum

in the rice field which served as a bio control agent against the rice stem borer.

This minute parasitoid oviposits their eggs on the eggs of stem borer and other

insect pests to prevent their population from dominating the area and prevent them

from attacking the rice and to ensure the proper growth and development of rice.
