~ action realize at the time of his exhibition of valor that on the
~~ ~ morrow the world will acclaim his heroism. Little does the
~ ~ inventor of a cunning mechanical device know that the product of
his brain may be destined to revolutionize methods followed for
a century, and less does the maker of history know that the project to which
he is devoting himself is only mentioned among the current events of today, but
may be that which, to the people of tomorrow, will be known as an important
event of history.
Those who have been at work on the construction of the Panama Canal
are as truly history makers as those legendary craftsmen who worked on the
building of the Temple, under the direction of the three Grand Masters. All
except the three Grand Masters (and the villainous fellowcrafts) have been
forgotten, just as those who served under Alexander the Great, William the
Conqueror, Napoleon and Washington have been forgotttn . The memory of
none but those who played the leading parts is commemorated in history.
Different from those who served under the great generals are the
builders of the Panama Canal. Their lot has not been to distinguish themselves
Reaper realize, upon looking back, that it required fortitude to remain and
continue at the task of building the Panama Canal, which at first looked
as much like a forlorn hope to the Americans as it did to the Frenchmen when
they gave it up in despair.
The Panama Canal is now practically ready to be opened to the commerce
of the world, and the construction of the Canal will go down into history
as one of the most important events of the twentieth century. On this great
work, which was made possible by Brother Theodore Roosevelt, as President of
the United States, as has been the case on all works of great magnitude, have
been found the Masons, playing in some cases very prominent parts, and in
other cases parts more obscure. They have been men of sound judgment, who
have quietly and efficiently performed those tasks to which they have devoted
themselves, and are now ready to pass onward to other tasks, which they will
perform in the same modest, unassuming manner.
Lest the work of these Masons be forgotten, this book has been com-
piled for the benefit of the Craft, and to each individual Mason whose privilege
it has been to be associated in the construction of the Panama Canal, this book
is fraternally dedicated.
9
f'i',C~,~ REEMASONRY and BROTHERHOOD are terms recognized at
~~~ once as synonymous throughout the universe, and, where practi-
~ ~ cally applied, result in ~he greatest good to the greatest number.
"Freemasonry has Withstood the shock and force that destroyed
Babylon, with her wonderful 'hanging gardens' and stupendous palaces.
Egypt and her golden age has passed away with her wonderful knowl-
edge · of mechanical arts and sciences. Cultured Greece, with her marble
miracles~ imd Imperial Rome have bowed their heads beneath the dust of
centuries; fallen, never to rise again, but Masonry, without any territorial
possessions, without any particular race or power to maintain it, comes forth
from the misty veil of the past, sublimely grand and beautiful."
Happy is the man who can say that he has been "initiated, passed and
raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason." Very few Masons are able
to say why they are called Masons. The name Freemason may be traced to
the ancient Egypto-Coptic words "Phree," meaning "Ligh_t," and "Massen,"
meaning "Sons;" hence the combination of the two words "Phree-Massen," indi-
cates "Sons of Light." Every Master Mason is a seeker after more light; he
has become one of the opposition to tyranny, fanaticism and ignorance, and
if he lives according to the principles of the degrees of the symbolic lodge (the
Blue Lodge), he will show the outer world what it means to have attained to
the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason, in being ever ready to practice the
three great tenets of our Order, Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth, "which
virtues will never die, but will live forever to the honor of our Illustrious
Fraternity and to the glory of the Great Architect of the Universe."
the time when this b ~ok g . e to press in 1914, many
have taken part in this most wonderful work, and it
is estimated, using the most reliable statistics avail-
able, that about eighteen hundred Masons have been
employed from time to time on the construction of
the Panama Canal. This large number of Masons
have scattered to the four corners of the earth, and
to get into personal touch with them all would be
a physical impossibility. Therefore the next best
method was empl yed. All available Masons were
communicated with and were advised of the proposed
publication of this Record, and they have voluntarily
supplied the photographs and their records of mem-
I in due and ancient form in the exact northeast corner of the Canal Zone.
Work proceeded until the walls were nearly completed, when, for financial
reasons, it became necessary to cease work. Owing to the peculiarities of the
law, and unexpected opposition from certain interests in the Canal Zone, in
order to complete the building the equity of Sojourners' Lodge was transferred
to the Panama Railroad Company, all outstanding bonds and interest paid off,
the lodge taking an option for the repurchase of the building. This building
Notwithstanding these adverse circumstances, for the past three years
Sojourners' Lodge has had as much work as it could handle, and always a
large number of applications on file. To show the vast amount of work that
is being carried on. we might call attention to the fact that during the year
1913 Sojourners' Lodge held 63 meetings, and at almost every degree meeting
a full class of candidates was handled.
The jurisdiction of the lodge extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific, a
distance of approximately 50 miles, and covers 15 different towns and vil-
lages. Its members have to travel long distances by train and boat to get to
lodge, yet from a membership of 240, the average attendance is between 40
and 50, remarkable showing under such adverse circumstances.
The instruction of candidates has been systematized by appointing an
instructor in each town, who holds a class of instruction on the average of
once a week. During the year 1913 the Worshipful Master, Eli D. Sims, has
lived on the Pacific side of the Isthmus, and notwithstanding the fact that he
has had to travel 40 miles to lodge and 40 miles back home, he has sat in the
East at 49 meetings of the lodge.
Now that the Canal work is drawing to a close, the members are rapidly
leaving the Isthmus of Panama, some to return to their homes in the United
States, others to go even to· the furtliermost ends of the earth to engage in
other great works of constructi n. Some will remain, and we look to them to
uphold the principles of Freem som·s. h tl'hs country, where Masonic ideals
are sadly needed.
Our brethren who in the fu ure may pass through the Gateway of the
Western World, may rest assured t at they will find in Sojourners' Lodge,
Cristobal, Canal Zone, a hearty and fraternal welcome for all time to come.
very young, Canal Zone Lodge, located at Ancon, Canal Zone, has fulfilled
the requirements of a year's dispensa 10 · and is confidently waiting for its
charter, which, upon its arrival, :\V'Iill make Canal Zone Lodge a duly consti-
tuted lodge of Ancient Free and .Aecepted Masons, and will place it in the
same enviable position on the Pacific Coast as the Sojourners' occupies on the
Atlantic Coast.
THE ANCIENT AND
ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE
OF FREEMASONRY ON THE
CANAL ZONE
~ HE establishment of Scottish Rite
Freemasonry on the Canal Zone was
; accomplished through the untiring
~&'"ll work and efforts of William Edgar
lQ)~ Parker, 32°, a member of the Grand
Consistory of Louisiana. There . were a number
of Master Masons on the Canal Zone who were
anxious and willing to have the degrees of the
Scottish Rite conferred upon them, and they were
situated so far from any point where there was a
working body of Scottish Rite Masons, that it was
next to impossible for them to receive the degrees.
William Edgar Parker undertook to make ar-
rangements whereby the work could be conferred
in the territorial limits of the Canal Zone. He WILLIAM EDGAR PARKER
These questions were referred to the Sovereign
"On or about March 8, 1912, I received an: application for a dispensatioN to
form arid open a Commandery in the Canal Zone, Isthmus of Panama, to be
known as Canal Zone Commandery (U. D.), of Knights Templar. This appli-
cation was signed by twenty-four Knights Templar, hailing from twelve
different states and twenty different Commanderies. The demits of these
fraters accompanied the petition, and a draft for $100-the usual dispensa-
tion fee-accompanied the papers, and this fee I promptly forwarded to the
Grand Recorder. The petitioners presented· the names of Sir Francis W.
Walraven for the position of Commander, Sir Frank Cotton as Generalissimo,
and Sir Benjamin F. Metcalf as Captain-General, and asked for their appoint-
ment as such by the Grand Master should he grant the dispensation. Accom-
panying the petition was the following letter:
are erecting a new concrete Temple costing about $60,000. This Lodge is in
direct fraternal communication, by special dispensation of their Grand Lodge,
with every Grand jurisdiction in the U. S. The membership of Sojourners'
Lodge is composed of Americans and Europeans; there are no negroes in either
PERSPECTIVE VIEW OF PORTO BELLO Q U ARRIES
34
Early in May, 1912, E. Sir F. W. Walraven, the Commander of Canal Zone
Commandery, called together the petitioners for the Commandery and the so-
journing Templars, and in accordance with the authority vested in him by
virtue of the dispensation, formed and opened the Commandery. Thirty Sir
Knights were present. A corps of officers was selected anrl the selection sub··
sequently approved and appointed by me and duly installed. Forty-seven
petitions were received and referred to committees at the first meeting, said
committees to examine and report to the Commandery at the next stated
meeting and in accordance with Templar law.
35
36
Orders which were received by this Commandery and acted upon were care-
fully scrutinized and subjected to a rigid investigation.
We have conformed to the rules as prescribed by the ritual in conducting
the ceremonies of the Order, and with the assistance and loyal support of the
Officers of my Command, together with that of Past Grand Commander, Right
Eminent Robert F. Scoffern, I believe it is safe for me to say that Canal Zone
Commandery (U. D.) will rank with the average good Commandery of the U.S.
While it has been a duty, it has been a pleasure, as well, to preside over
this Body and to confer the Orders, and nothing has arisen to mar our success.
Most of the Sir Knights who signed for the dispensation wish their mem-
. bership to revert to the Commandery from which they hail, there being but
four who will sign for a Charter, together with one who wishes to affiliate by
demit, which will give us a Charter membership of eighty.
Our treasury is in a healthy condition, there being approximately $3,000
to our credit in the local bank, and we expect in the near future, with the assist-
ance of the other Masonic Bodies now under Charter, to erect a building suit-
able to our needs, of concrete construction and for Masonic purposes only.
We have appeared in public on several occasions, such as to conduct the
funeral services of Sir Knight Paynter prior to sending his remains to the
United States; we also attended religious services on Christmas Day and Easter.
This, I think, covers all the work during the period that we have been a
Commandery Under Dispensation.
With best wishes for your fut ure . lfare and prosperity, I am
WALRAVEN,
Comma; le1'" Ganal Zone Commander-y (U. D.)
The above account from the hand of the Grand Master gives, in detail,
the history of the forming of the Canal Zone Commandery. As this history of
Masons and Masonry on the Panama Canal goes to press, the dispensation
granted Canal Zone Commandery is being replaced by a Charter from the
GranQ. Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States, and, under the
name of Canal Zone Commandery No.1, the Templar Masons of the Isthmus of
Panama will continue to work in the City of Aneon, Canal Zone, their new
habitat.
The Grand Master has given all due credit to Sir Walraven, a very enthu-
siastic and energetic Mason, which every Knight Templar on the Isthmus of
Panama will acknowledge as just. He, with his Fraters, have worked hard
and well. The Knights Templar of the Canal Zone are the flower of Masonry,
and be it said to their everlasting credit that they live as closely to the beauti-
ful principles of the Order as human frailty will permit. They are doing a
noble work and are a credit to their Illustrious Grand Master, who feels that
the trust which he has placed in them has been fully justified.
caring to reverse the ruling of his predecessor,
he declined the application, and his action was
later approved at the Imperial Council, meet-
Though the project seemed to be doomed
so impressed with the importance of the pro-
The Ceremonial was held at t he bottom
of the gigantic lock near. the Pacific end of the
Canal. This great lock chamber is 1,000 feet
in length, 110 feet wide and 77 feet in depth,
and admirably suited for the working of the
degree. Owing to the impossibility of properly
lighting the lock at night and to the great heat
in the middle of the day, it was decided to be
- advisable to hold the Ceremonial at 7 a. m.
So far as we are able to learn, this Ceremonial
had the added distinction of being the first
Shrine Ceremonial to be held before breakfast
Nobles and novices spent several of the best
years of their lives to rear the massive structure within the walls of which the
Ceremonial was held to appreciate the great interest which has been mani-
fested in the event for the past three years. With the consent of the Govern-
ment of the United States, a beautiful bronze tablet, twenty by thirty inches,
suitably inscrib~d, has been imbedded in the solid masonry of the lock wall, to
forever mark the place where memorable Shrine history was made on Septem-
ber 1, 1913.
The membership of the Panama Shriners' Club now numbers two hun-
dred, and though the primary object for its organization has been most suc-
cessfully consummated, its field of usefulness is by no means exhausted, and
_ its continued success in the Masonic field on the Isthmus is assured. The
officers of the Club for 1914 are: Noble Gerald D. Bliss, of Ismalia Temple,
President, Cristobal, C. Z. ; Noble Frank T. Hamlin, of Omar Temple, Vice-
President, Corozal, C. Z., and Noble Lewis E. Willson, of Osman Temple,
Secretary-Treasurer, of Empire, C.Z.
41
Too much credit for continued activity and well directed efforts cannot
be given to Noble Gerald D. Bliss, Noble Francis W. Walraven, Noble Frank
H. Wang, Noble Quincy A. Hall and Noble Frank T. Hamlin, to whose
persistent efforts the culminating event of Canal Zone Shrine history-
Osman's Ceremonial-is actually due. Others have given their labor, but they
all admit that much credit should be given to the above named.
Were time and space not so limited, the trip of the Nobles of Osman
Temple, from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Panama, their entertainment while on
· the Isthmus, the balls, fetes, banquets, parades and other entertainments in
their honor, could be dwelt upon at length; suffice it to say that the Nobles who
crossed the hot sands on September first, Nineteen Hundred and Thirteen, are
all perfectly satisfied that the sands are as hot in the bottom of Miraflores Lock
. as they are at the feet of the Sphinx or any place on the Desert of Sahara,. and
many a Noble bears the callous places on his hands that he acquired while hold-
ing onto the rope in the abyss of the Mi1·aflores Lock. The Miraflores Lock is
now filled with water, possibly for all future time. Osman Temple has held its
