Strengths: Hazrat Umar was strong physically and in character as well. About his strength of Iman, it is
evident from the Prophet’s saying: “O Ibn Al-Khattab! By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whenever Satan
sees you taking a way, he follows a way other than yours!” (Sahih al Bukhari-6085)
“We have become mighty since ‘Umar became Muslim.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the
Companions, Hadith 3481
While I was sleeping, I saw myself drinking (i.e. milk), and I was so contented that I saw the milk flowing
through my nails. Then I gave (the milk) to `Umar. (Sahih Al Bukhari – 3681)
Sense of Responsibility: One day Ali saw Umar rushing by. He asked him where he was going. Umar
said:‘I am catching one of the camels of charity that had run away. ’He also said:
‘If a goat were lost in the rims of the Euphrates [river], Umar would be accountable for it in the day of
Judgment.’ (Ibn al Jawzi)
Righteousness: ‘Umar Ibn Khattab’s son Abu Shahma drank alcohol and he was punished by the
governor with lashes but it was not carried out in public. So ‘Umar Ibn Khattab ordered Amr bin Al
Aas to bring his son to come back to madina and it was carried out in public and he died.

Listening:
‘Umar ibn Khattab’s (r.a) leadership was his ability to listen and listening to criticisms. He used to listen
or pay attention to the grudges of his followers whether against himself or against any of his appointed
governors.
Empathy or understanding and entering into another's feelings can be seen from ‘Umar’s (r.a) character
especially during the year of Ashes (Ar-Ramadah) when the famine, drought and hunger struck Madinah.
People could not find food to eat, and he vowed not to eat ghee and yogurt as usual. He laments “How
can I be concerned for the people, if I do not suffer what they suffer”
Building Community: He strove to make the people adhere to the command of Allah and the commands
of His Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) . He strove to make people avoid that which has been forbidden by
Allah and his prophet using his position as caliph of the Muslim and through the governors of the
provinces.
One night Umar Farooq (RA) invited on of his companion Aslam to visit a remote village in Madinah. As
he strolled from street to street all was quiet and the people seemed to be asleep. Then as he turned a
corner, he stopped in front of a shabby tent. A little child's crying voice disturbed his attention. Caliph
Umar then invited Aslam to approach the tent and ascertain whether the residents needed help. Why
are your children crying? Is she sick?" asked the Caliph. No, she is hungry," said the woman. “And what
are you cooking”, asked Umar. The lady said that in the kettle there was only water and stones. The
answer made the Caliph Umar and Aslam stunned. Umar (RA)went to the Baitul Mal and took a sack of
wheat. Regardless of fatigue, Caliph Umar raised the grain sack on his back. Aslam immediately
prevents. "O Amirul Mukminin, let me carry the sack," said Aslam. Aslam's sentence was unable to make
Umar calm. His face was red and heard Aslam's words. "Aslam, don't put me into hell. You will replace
me carrying this burden, do you want to carry the burden on my shoulders on the day of vengeance?"
Umar said in a high tone.
