MAIN PARTICULARS
KIND OF INSTALLATION
The unit will be delivered in Schottel standard tunnel length. It will be welded into the
hull of the vessel with a vertical power input flange arrangement. The thruster with it’s
direct connection to the vessel could be defined as a part of the vessels hull.
TRANSVERSE TUNNEL:
The transverse tunnel is made of shipbuilding steel grade A of welded construction.
Zinc anodes as protection against corrosion of the bow thruster unit are mounted on the
tunnel wall and on the cover of the lower gearbox. This protection is designed for a
protection period of two years basing on the standard tunnel length. Anode protection
for the tunnel parts which are not scope of supply of SCHOTTEL is not delivered.
The transverse tunnel is fitted with a welded in flange for fastening the under water gear
and a welded on seating for the drive motor.
This flange is connected on both sides laterally to 2 stiffening rings and to a central
supporting ring. The outer stiffening rings are flat on the bottom side which allows an
easy installation to the frame structure.
Moreover the foundation of the electric motor is equipped with radial mounting recesses
for the erection of oil pipe connection lines.
The propeller shaft is made from high tensile steel and runs in roller bearing. The
sealing of the shafting is achieved through radial shaft sealing rings. Sealing rings which
come in contact with seawater are made from high grade special stainless steel ring.
The precision bevel gears are made from high quality steel, case hardened and recut or
grinded after hardening. This results in a highly accurate tooth profile which ensures
perfect matching of the bevel gear set and a high safety factor against contact stress.
The support arm of the underwater gear housing to the tunnel is welded in. It is part of
SCHOTTEL scope of supply.
All running surfaces of shafts, flanges etc. are coated with wear and corrosion resistant
material.
LUBRICATION:
Lubrication is ensured by an oil bath lubrication. The cooling of oil is effected by heat
dissipation in the lower gearbox to the running water.
The separate oil header tank with level gauge is equipped with a level switch for the
alarm indication 'oil level too low' to be connected to the warning unit which is supplied
by the shipyard.
Note : This oil header tank has to be installed by the yard 1 meter above the loaded
waterline.
On the lower gear unit two connection flanges for the pipes to the oil header tank are
foreseen.
Connections between oil header tank and lower gear unit are not scope of SCHOTTEL
supply.
POWER TRANSMISSION
SHAFTLINE:
An elastic coupling is fitted between the power input shaft of the tunnel thruster and the
electric prime mover (form of construction: V1) which is mounted directly vertical on the
thruster unit.
PRIME MOVER
Remark: It must be ensured that bow thruster room is enough ventilated. Temperature
may not exceed 45°C. Heat dissipation from bow thruster motor and starting
resistance can be estimated as followed:
ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT:
GENERAL:
The electric equipment is designed for operation at 45° C ambient. The equipment is
designed for a drive with fixed pitch propeller that means with change of sense of
rotation in 3-0-3 speeds graduated in 70/85/100 % of rated speed.
CONTROL CUBICLE:
The control cubicle is made of sheet steel sectional iron frame construction in
accordance with mode of protection IP 54 and is provided for installation close to the
electric motor. All contactors, relays, fuses and tripping devices are accessible easily by
front doors.

Lubrication
The lower gear--box (5/6) of the STT (5/9) is
completely filled with oil (splash lubrication). For
compensating the heat expansion of the lubrication
oil is used the oil compensating reservoir (5/3).
The oil level in the oil compensating reservoir is
monitored by a level monitoring probe (5/4) or a float
switch (5/5).
With insufficient oil level a visual and audible warning
message is transmitted to the steering stand.
Oil level and oil condition can be checked at the
sight--glass (5/2).

Thermal protection: On a special request stator winding of the motor can be protected from
overheating by using PTC thermistors. In order to protect all the windings of the motor one PTC
thermistor is embedded in each phase of the winding. The PTC thermistors are connected in series
and two ends of such connection are led out in the terminal box. These two ends have to be
connected to the control unit. Besides, the motors can be equipped with additional thermistors for
alarm.
Cables of the PTC thermistors are placed into separate terminal box.
Heaters: As a protection against condenset water the motors can be equipped with heaters. During
the motor standstill the heaters must be switched on. The power and supply voltage of the heating
elements are shown in the following table:
Cables of the heaters are placed into the main terminal box.
3 INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTANCE MANUAL
The motors satisfy the requirements of the classification soceities, on Essential Service. "Essential
service" is a concept that covers installation vital to the safety of the ship.
GENERAL
This manual is provided with three-phase drip-proof slipring induction motors. Motors are self-
ventilated by fans, in compliance with IC 01 cooling system ( according to IEC 60034-6 ). Degrees of
protection are IP23.
Motors must be transported by means and in ways which exclude possible damaging, positioned
identically to future operational position ( i.e. the position they are placed in protective covers ).
Motors should be stored inside a dry, roofed place, kept away from harmful gasses. If storing is
prolonged, it is necessary to perform a manual rotor turning at least once a year.
Manipulating with motors in transit must be adjusted to covers, engaging forklifts or using ropes fitted
to motor's carrying places.
INSTALLATION
Motors type (2.)BOPT 180-355 are manufactured in protection degree IP 23, while the terminal box in
protection degree IP 55. The parts under tension (live parts and the inner rotating ones are protected
against the penetration of solid strange parts having the diameter superior to 8 mm Ø and against
o
splashing water above, until 30 in relation to the horizontal. This class of insulation protects the
inner motors parts even in outdoor installation.
When installing the motor, it should be kept in view, not to prevent the entering of the cooling air
through the fan cover.
The motors are forseen to work at ambient temperature according to Table 1.
The bed-plate of the motor should be flat, solid and firm. When the motor is installed with a coupling
device (flange) a special attention should be given to the shaft.Unilitarity of the driven machine and the
motor (Figure 1 and 2) as well as to the axial gap of the clutch disk.
When installing the motor with a pulley, the following should be considered:
- the streching force of the belt, which should not exceed the permissable value. The streching
force value should be controlled by the puley deflection.
- the streching force, which should be vertical to the longitudinal motor shaft while the action
direction of the resultant force should pass through the pulley median line.
For the cases of belt drive and for the selection of elements the manufacturer shouod be consulted, as
well as in the cases of gears, where considerable radial forces can occure of axially loaded helical
gears.
The transmission elements should be dinamically balanced with half key in the key slot.
INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTANCE MANUAL 4
APPLICATIONS
When connecting the motor to the network, the following should be checked:
- whether the nameplate-data correspond to the voltage and frequency of the network,
- whether the position of the straps on the terminal screws correspond to the connection indicated on
the name plate,
- whether the rotor-terminals are connected to the starter,
- whether is the starter in start position (the greatest resistance connected to the rotor-circuit),
- whether the brushes bear up correctly to the slipring.
Fig.3
Warning ! Before starting any work on the motor, insure that it (including main and any
additional or auxiliary circuits) is properly isolated from the power suply.
5 INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTANCE MANUAL
The connection schemes are for right-hand side rotation, viewed from the driven end (fig. 3). Fof the
left-hand side rotation the phase sequence should be changed.
Fig.4
Brushes (26) and sliprings are accessible by removing the protective screen on stator endshield B side
(13).
Sliprings and brushes have to be controlled more often in the beginning, later monthly.
- The surface of the sliprings has to be smooth without drills and seizing up of damaged places.
Smaller unevennesses may be removed by polishing while the motor is running, only the dust
resulting from the polishing must obligatory be removed from the motor.
- Brushes must move freely in the brush holders. When 2/3 of the whole brush lenght is rubbed out,
brushes have to be exchanged by new ones having approximately the same qualities as the former
ones, i.e. hardness approximately 10 HB, voltage drop per brush 0,4V and that they are made of
bronz-graphit. The new brushes have to be polished in such a way, that they bear up 3/4 of their
whole surface.
- Once a month graphit dust has to be blown out from the motor by means of compressed air.
If any irregularity in the work of the whole set is noticed it is necessary to determine and to remove
the reason of it, which may be:
- greater or smaller current loading per brush from the rated one
- unadequate brush quality,
- too strong vibrations
- unadequate pressure on the brushes,
- existance of damaging substances in the air, etc
INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTANCE MANUAL 6
Once a year the excentricty of the sliprings has to be checked; it has to be less than 0,02 mm, then
the pressure on the brushes that has to be approximately 2,2 x 104 Pa (0,225 kp/cm2).
Fig.5
- It is necessary to prevent the corrosion of the moving parts so that the device should not fail after the
motor has not been operating for a longer period of time.
- Switching off of the short-circuiting ring and lowering of the brushes has to be performed only when
the electromotor dees not work.
- Brush exchange (26) is made by removing screw M6x30 and by removing the dove tail (25) for
fixing.
- The new brushes have to be polished on a radius R 117 so as to bear up with 3/4 of their bearing up
surface.
-The brush holders are protected with nickel-plating.
The technical data for brushes and brush holders are given in table 4.

LUBRICATION
The bearings for motors for frame size 180 and 200 are lubricated by the motor manufacturer and
cannot be relubricated without deassembling of the motors end shields. The motors from frame size
225 up to 355 are fitted with regreasing device. The type of grease, grease quantity and regreasing
time are imprinted to the name plate. Full range data are shown in the Table 5.
When exchanging the grease, a care should be taken not to fill the space, forseen for grease, more
than 2/3 because a larger grease quantity would cause an overheating of grease.
The bearing system of the motors (2.)BOP 225 355 provides an undisturbed lubrication of the
bearings during the operation of the motor. The bearing assemblies of the motors are provided with
grease volume governors so they make them safe from larger grease quantity than prescribed.
