60 Years

HISTORY - Since 1929, the small city of Holland, Michigan has blossomed with literally hundreds of thousands of tulips and an equal number of tulip lovers who attend our annual Tulip Time Festival. Tulip Time Festival started as a relatively small event, proposed by Miss Lida Rogers, a high school biology teacher, in 1927. Her proposal to the Womens Literary Club was accepted, and in 1929, the City of Holland planted its first crop of 100,000 tulips. As spectator numbers soared from thousands to hundreds of thousands, the celebration lengthened by days; pageantry, costumes, parades and the popular Dutch Dancers were added to produce a week-long festival that is now over 80 years old! This year is the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of the founder of Holland, Michigan: Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte. For more information: www.dutchheritagewestmichigan.com TIME - Holland is on Eastern Daylight Savings Time. TRAFFIC PATTERNS - Tune your dial to CB/Channel 9 or 530 AM. Exiting and entering town via 16th, 24th or 32nd Streets, & Pine or Van Raalte Avenues is recommended. AIRPORT - The nearest major airport is Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids (GRR), approximately 40 minutes away. Several car rental companies are located within the terminal. www.grr.org. TULIPS - A lot of time goes into the planting and beautification of our tulips. We ask that you enjoy them and take a lot of photos but please do not pick them.
