Math 7 q2 Module 5
Math 7 q2 Module 5
Based from the MELC Most Essential Learning Competency, this module is
crafted to help the students to learn about exponents, how to derive laws of
exponent, multiply and divides polynomials. This will introduce the concept of
simplifying an exponent.
What’s In
Perform the indicated operation. Write your answer on a separate sheet of
paper.
1. y• y• y =
2. (2x)2 =
3. (5y2)3 =
4. =
5. (ab)0 =
Question:
1. How would you describe your answer?
1
What’s New
Activity 1 : Simplify the following expressions. Write your answer in a separate
sheet of paper.
1. (3y3 ) (2y5)2 =
2. a10 a5 =
3. ( )0 =
4. =
5. )5 =
Questions:
1. What have you done to simplify these values?
2. What happens to the result of the expression if the exponent is equal to zero?
3. What do you think is zero raised to 0?
What is it
If n is a positive integer, then xn = x • x • x • x … • x (n factors)
2
Power Law
For any counting numbers, a raised to m power and multiplied by n, (am)n is also the same
as am • n.
Examples: A.)What does the expression (a5)3 mean? Which is the base and the exponent
(a5)3 means a5• a5 •a5 = a15
If we just multiply the exponents 5 and 3, do we get the same results?
(a5)3 = a5•3 = a15
B.) (x10)4 means x10(4) = x40
To raise a power to an exponent, multiply the two exponents and write the product
as the exponent of the base. This is the Power Law of Exponents.
Quotient Law
B.) = = =
2 2 2 2 2 16
Examples: A.) ( ) 4 = =
3 3 3 3 3 81
4 x 2 4 x 4 x 16 x 2
B.) ( ) = =
5y 5 y 5 y 25 y 2
If m = n, = am – n = a0 = 1. Where a ≠ 0.
Examples: A.) = 28 – 8 = 20 = 1
B.) = = =1
In the previous activity you learned that m is a positive integer, then a-n = and if a is
any real number, then a0 = 1
3
Multiplication of Polynomials
Division of Polynomials
Examples: A.)
Solution: - +
= 3ab2 – 4ab2 + 1
B. )Divide c2 – 25 by c + 5
5x2 – 3x + 4
Solution: 2x + 1√10x3 – x2 + 5x + 4
10x3 + 5x2_________
- 6x2 + 5x
- 6x2 – 3x_____
8x + 4
8x + 4__
0
3 2
Step 1. Divide 10x by 2x, obtaining 5x .
Step 2. Multiply 5x2 by 2x + 1, obtaining 10x3 + 5x2 .
Step 3. Subtract 10x3 + 5x2 from 10x3 – x2, obtaining -6x2. Bring down 5x.
Step 4. Divide -6x2 by 2x. The quotient is -3x.
Step 5. Multiply -3x by 2x + 1. The result is -6x2 – 3x.
Step 6. Subtract -6x2 – 3x from -6x2 + 5x. The difference is 8x. Bring down 4.
Step 7. Divide 8x by 2x, obtaining 4.
Step 8. Multiply 4 by 2x + 1. The product 8x + 4 is subtracted from 8x + 4.
The result is 0.
