Psychiatric Nursing Practice


→ Integrates the biological, psychological, socio-cultural, environmental, legal and ethical
realities of life.
Health
→ State of complete physical, mental, and social well-being
→ Sense of satisfaction and enjoyment of self and environment

Mental Illness
→ Clinically significant behavior or psychological syndrome experienced by a person and
marked by distress, risk or suffering or loss of freedom.
Exact cause: UNKNOWN
According to research: triggering environmental factors (POVERTY AND STRESS)

7 ELEMENTS OF MENTAL HEALTH


► SELF-ESTEEM – acceptance of self, self-awareness, sense of identity, wholeness and
belongingness, security and meaningfulness of a person. “I am competent”, “I am worthy”
>Self-concept: what we think about the self, positive or negative evaluation of self,
how we feel about ourselves

► GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT, SELF ACTUALIZATION


→ is adequately in touch with one’s self able to use the resources, person can share with
other people and grow from such experiences, easily interact freely with the
environment.

► TOLERANCE OF UNCERTAINTY
→ faces the uncertainty of life with faith and hope, person can easily adapt

► SELF-GOVERNANCE
→ person acts independently, dependently, or interdependently as the need arises without
permanently losing his/her AUTONOMY.

► REALITY ORIENTATION
→ person distinguishes facts from fantasies, behave accordingly

► MASTERY OF ENVIRONMENT
→ person is competent, effective, and creative in interacting with and influencing his/her
environment

► STRESS MANAGEMENT
→ experiences appropriate emotions in daily life and can tolerate stress.

Mental Illness reflects a person’s inability to cope with:


➢ Stress

➢ Inappropriate reactions

MENTAL HYGIENE
→ Mental health and preventing the development of psychosis, neurosis, or other mental
disorders
▫ Psychosis- abnormal condition of the mind
▫ Neurosis- class of functional mental disorder, distress but neither delusional nor
hallucinations whereby behavior is not outside socially acceptable

PSYCHIATRIC HEALTH CARE TEAM


→ Members of several disciplines who participates in the promotion of a therapeutic
milieu.
PSYCHIATRIC NURSING
→ A process whereby the nurse assists persons, as individuals or in groups
→ Also called MENTAL HEALTH NURSING: Branch of nursing concerned with prevention of
cure with mental disorders
► PSYCHIATRIC NURSE
→ RN who specializes in mental health nursing, imploring theories of nsg behavior
► PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN OR NURSE
→ assists the mental health team in maintaining therapeutic environment, providing
care, supervising activities
► PSYCHIATRIST
→ Licensed physician with at least 3 years training in psychiatry, 2 years of clinical
psychiatric practice

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
-Doctoral degree in clinical psychology, licensed by state law, completed a psychology
internship, supervised work experience

PSYCHIATRIC SOCIAL WORKER


-Baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degree
-Uses community resources and adaptive capacities of individual and groups to facilitate
positive interaction with the environment

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
-baccalaureate degree/master’s degree in occupational therapy
-creative techniques and purposeful activities, as well as therapeutic relationship, to alter
the course of an illness

EDUCATIONAL THERAPIST
-college graduate who specializes field of education therapy
-Remedial classes, special education for maladjusted children

ART THERAPIST
-master’s degree and specialized training in art therapy
-Encourages creative artwork to express feelings of emotional conflicts

MUSICAL THERAPIST
-master’s degree and training in music therapy
-focus on expression of self through singing, dancing, playing instruments, composing songs,
and writing lyrics

PSYCHODRAMA THERAPIST
-advance degree and training in group therapy
-therapy is also referred to as role playing therapy
-people are encouraged to act out

PLAY THERAPIST
-observes behavior, affect, ad conversation of a child who plays in a protected environment
