of a company’s activities through improving the efficiency of processes, reducing the use of
energy, water and fossil fuel when transporting goods.
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment. It
calculates all the greenhouse gases we are expected to produce in all our activities and
measures them in units of carbon dioxide.
Reducing the amount goods travel and reducing the amount of energy your organization uses
reduce both the greenhouse effect and your costs.
Sustainability improvements can also provide you with a competitive advantage with
environmentally conscious customers.
A key part of the Kyoto Protocol is that countries that have signed it are legally bound to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.
The primary sources of energy for heating and lighting the warehouse are gas and electricity,
and there are multiple ways of generating electricity.
There are a number of options for reducing your carbon footprint caused by warehouse heating
and lighting. Some examples include automatic lighting systems, LED lights, keeping the
warehouse at a lower temperature, or even investing in renewable energy technology.
13.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by transportation of which 60% of all
emissions are generated by ground transportation.
There are technology solutions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, like
electric vehicles, but there are also management solutions such as reducing the number of miles
or kilometers your organization transports goods.
Less transportation also leads to less need for replacement parts for trucks, airplanes, and ships.
Forklifts are an additional cause of greenhouse gas emissions. Consider moving to electric
forklifts or reducing the amount of kilometers they travel.
Look for opportunities to reduce packaging both in terms of reducing the amount and re-using
as much as possible.
Bagasse and Mycelium are two new technologies that can be used to improve the sustainability
of packaging.
Reducing excess packaging results in lighter, smaller shipments that cost less to transport. This
means that greater quantities can fit on pallets, in shipping containers, in warehouses and on
retailers’ shelves. Bagasse and Mycelium packaging can contribute to that goal.
