Using and Maintaining
Hand Tools
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE Computer System Servicing Grade 7/8 Self-Learning Module
(SLM) on Using and Maintaining Hand Tools !

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the TLE Computer System Servicing - Grade 7/8) Self-Learning Module
(SLM) on Using and Maintaining Hand Tools !

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a

Lesson
Using and Maintaining Hand
1 Tools

Using and maintaining hand tools help you acquire the knowledge, skills and
attitudes you needed in identifying, preparing, using, and maintaining tools and
equipment in Computer System Servicing which is your basic step in becoming a
proficient computer technician.

What’s In

Do you have hand tools at home? Can you identify them? Some of
these tools are used in repairing and maintaining electrical and electronic
components (or appliances) at home.

In this module, you will learn different hand tools and their uses in
repairing and maintaining computer devices to avoid damage of tools and
safety procedures with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Notes to the Teacher

1. Read the lessons properly. These will guide you to do at the
end of this module.
2. Find out what you already know by taking the learning
activities.
3. Apply what you have learned in another activity or real-life
situation.
What’s New

Proper Tools and Selection

In repairing and maintaining hardware equipment, it is necessary to have a

toolkit that contains all the necessary tools in different types of jobs. Now, you will
learn which tools to use in preparing a task.

Common the names of tools

Table 1. Tools and its uses

Tools Picture

1. Long Nose Pliers is used for holding, bending and

stretching the lead of electronics component or
connecting wire.

2. Wire Cutter is used for cutting copper, brass,

iron, aluminum and steel wires.

3. Flat Head Screwdriver is used to drive or fasten

negative slotted screws.

4. Philips Head Screwdriver is used to drive or

fasten positive slotted screws

5. Soldering iron is a hand tool used to join two or

more metal conductors with the support of
soldering lead melted around it.

6. Soldering Stand is a hand tool composed of a

heavy-duty metal base and a reinforced spring
holder.

7. Soldering Lead is a metal or alloy that is used to

join together metal workpieces.

8. Soldering Flux is a chemical agent used to supply

a clean soldered.
9. Crimping Tool is a tool used to conjoin two pieces
of metals by deforming one or both that causes it
to hold together.

10. Wire Stripper is a small hand-held device used

to strip the electrical insulation from electric
wires.

11. Tweezer is a tool used to manipulate small parts.

12. Anti-static wrist strap is used to safely ground a

person working on very sensitive electronic
equipment, to prevent the buildup of electricity on
their body, which might lead to electrostatic
discharge (ESD) Equipment.

13. Multi-tester is a tool used to test the integrity of

circuits and therefore the quality of electricity in
computer components.

14. Lan Tester is a tool designed to check most

network cable wiring.

Proper use of hand tools

A computer technician is requiring using appropriate tools within the

toolkit when repairing computers. Here is the correct use of tools in working
areas.

 Several tools are magnetized. When working around electronic devices, take
care that tools you’re using haven’t been magnetized. Magnetic fields may be
harmful to data stored on magnetic media. Test your tool by touching the
tool with a screw. If the screw is drawn to the tool, don’t use the tool.
1. Screws. Screws can become exposed if you over-tighten them with a
screwdriver. An exposed screw can be struck within the screw hole, or it
should not tighten firmly. Discard exposed screws.

a. Flat-head screwdriver. Don’t use a flat head screwdriver to get rid of

a Phillips head screw. Never use a screwdriver as a pry bar or
crowbar. If you can’t remove a component, check to determine if
there’s a clip or latch that’s securing the component in position.

b. Philips screwdriver. Use a Phillips head screwdriver with crosshead

screws. Don’t use this kind of screwdriver to puncture anything. This
can damage the head of the screwdriver.

2. Soldering iron and stand. Always use a soldering iron and stand to
avoid burns or damage after soldering.

3. Crimping tool and wire stripper. Always verify the types of wire or
cable of a crimper if it is capable of crimping. And make sure that the
stripper has a comfortable grip, cleanly removes insulation from wires,
and keeps the actual wire intact.

4. Long Nose Pliers and Tweezer. When holding wires, grip the long
nose pliers carefully and firmly. Do not use it as a hammer. For hard to
reach objects or small ones, use the tweezer.

5. Multi-tester and Lan tester. Always maintain the functionality and

accuracy of multi tester and LAN tester to ensure the accurateness of
measurement of any things that you measure.

6. Anti-static wrist strap. Check properly the overall use, possible wear,
and cleanliness of the wrist strap. Always ground yourself while
working with electronic components.

Proper Maintenance of Tools

To prevent tools from damage, we must properly maintain the tools to keep
them safe and in usable condition. Here are the subsequent requirements for
tools and equipment maintenance:

1. Obtaining a duplicate of the upkeep schedule recommended by the

manufacturer.
2. Ensuring that maintenance is performed as needed.
3. Ensuring that the person(s) performing the upkeep is competent.
4. Retaining records of maintenance/service conducted
5. Specifying who is to blame for overseeing equipment maintenance and
where the records are kept
6. Putting in a system for removal and tagging of damaged or defective tools
and equipment.
To ensure that tools and equipment remain in condition and last for a
protracted time, store them properly so it’ll be easy to search out when needed, and
are less likely to be lost.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

This is to shield you from hazards that may happen during the working time
at your workplace. Always wear PPE equipment like gloves, safety glasses,
protective masks, and rubber sole shoes.
