Assignment #2

Difficult Choices

In regards to the ethical dilemma for this assignment, I feel that I would not say anything to
anyone involved in the situation. The first reason for this course of action would be that I am obligated,
as instructed by HR, to not say anything. In this case, there is an element of legal responsibility I am
obligated to adhere to as my job requires me to uphold the requests of the company and of what HR
asks of me. Not doing so would possibly be seen as breaching my contract and have, potentially, serious
ramifications for my career with the company.

Another factor to consider is the moral and ethical aspect of the situation. First, when analyzing
the situation, I don’t believe there are any conflicts of interest present that could bias me in my decision.
Therefore the main consideration I would need to make would be if the choice was potentially ethical or
not. The course text also mentions the concept of conflicts of loyalty (Business Faculty from Ontario
Colleges, 2018). It states that, “as an employee, your primary responsibility is to your employer” which
would fall in line with my previously stated action. While I may want to justify attempting to warn my
employees of their job status, the correct action according to this concept would be to say nothing.
Furthermore, the company is willing to include a severance package and offer benefits and paid work to
help ease the turmoil. This last detail would convince me that the company is attempting to offer some
aid and goodwill which is another reason I would choose to say nothing as the company has tried to do
as much as they can and I should respect their request of me.

The feasibility of my options is another factor I would also have to consider when making my
choice. In the example, my two highest paid employees have decided have decided to purchase homes
during a pandemic when company sales are down and, most likely, many other companies have decided
to downsize. I would contemplate that the chance of our company downsizing would be a very real
possibility and as staff in the Operations department, it should be a very evident possibility. This is why I
believe me informing them would probably not sway their choice to buy a house, as many others during
the pandemic have bought houses at increasing rates.

The video shown this week discussed the concept of utilitarianism (TED-Ed, 2017). Applying that
principle to this example, I would still choose to say nothing as informing two employees would create a
net benefit to just those two individuals while harming not only myself but the HR department as well as
the rest of the company with countless other employees as leaking this information may have
unintended consequences harmful to the company and its remaining employees. As a result, the trade-
off for supplying information to two employees doesn’t seem to create the most benefit and thus should
not be undertaken as my course of action. Given my previous points, I firmly believe that the best course
of action for myself and others which would produce the most net positive outcomes would be to say
nothing and follow the orders of HR.
