Solve each problem. Write your hypothesis, test hypothesis, and draw your conclusion.

You can use excel or solve manually.

1. A fourth-grade class is studying the environment. One of the assignments is to grow

bean plants in different soils. Tommy chose to grow his bean plants in soil found outside
his classroom mixed with dryer lint. Tara chose to grow her bean plants in potting soil
bought at the local nursery. Nick chose to grow his bean plants in soil from his mother’s
garden. No chemicals were used on the plants, only water. They were grown inside the
classroom next to a large window. Each child grew five plants. At the end of the growing
period, each plant was measured, producing the data in inches as shown below:
Tommy’s Tara’s Nick’s
Plant Plants Plants
24 25 23
21 31 27
23 23 22
30 20 30
23 28 20
Does it appear that the three soils in which the bean plants were grown produce the
same mean height? Test at a 5 percent level of confidence.

2. The mean and population standard deviation of the blood sugar level of randomly
selected 50 patients in a hospital are 130 mg/dl and 4.6 mg/dl, respectively. Find the lower
and upper confidence limits with 90% confidence interval for the mean of all patients in
the hospital.

3. The following were scores in a mathematics test selected by a teacher from all the test
scores of Grade 11 students.
74 78 86 88 69 83 70 83 87 62 92 66 65
75 74 90 76 57 72 83
Assume that above scores were randomly selected by the teacher from a normal
population and the variance is unknown. Construct a 95% confidence interval to estimate
the population mean score.

4. The owner of mobile phone store at Greenhills Shopping Center was not happy when he
learned that the average number of mobile phones sold daily was only 8 mobile
phones. He hired of new seller and told him to tally the daily sales for 18 days. The
following are the number of mobile phones sold for the past 20 days.
9 9 9 8 9 9 11 12 12 17
16 10 12 8 11 17 18 15 14 14
Do the collected data present sufficient evidence to indicate that the average number of
mobile phones sold daily has increased? Use 0.05 level of significance. Assume
normality in the population.
5. The average IQ for the adult population is 100 with σ=15. According to research, this has
changed. To test the claim, average IQ of 75 random adults was gathered which is 105.
Is there enough evidence to suggest the average IQ has changed? What is the p-value
of the data?

6. A researcher claims that the starting salary for male physician assistants is more than
that for female physician assistants. A random sample of 12 male and 9 female physician
assistants yielded the information given. Is there enough sample evidence to support the
researcher’s claim? Test at 1% level of significance.
MALE FEMALE
Sample Size 12 9
Sample Mean $ 71,000 $ 69,500
Sample Standard Deviation $1,000 $1,500
7. An Instructor wanted to measure the basic math skills of her students before and after
her college algebra course. A skills test administered at the beginning of the semester,
and the scores were recorded. At the end of the semester, the instructor administered the
same test and recorded the scores. Use a 95% confidence interval for this set of data to
test if there is an improvement in their scores. Use the data below.

Student # Before After diff Mean Dev Squared Mean D

1 61 68
2 58 62
3 79 83
4 69 65
5 62 62
6 71 74
7 25 31
8 48 52
9 53 51
8. The UP Cebu clinic conducted an experiment to determine the degree of relief provided
by three headache remedies. Each remedy was tried on 50 students and the following
data recorded. At 𝛼 = 0.05, are the three remedies equally effective?
Advil Biogesic Dolfenal
No relief 11 13 9
Some relief 32 28 27
Total relief 7 9 14
