1. SCOPE

This procedure covers the handling, baking and holding of the electrode to be used in the
workshop & Filed Site for fabrication of code item thereof in accordance with code.
This procedure to be read in conjunction with This procedure to be read in conjunction with
Drawing/FQP/General Notes/Technical specifications.

2. REFERENCE

2.1 ASME Sec. II PART C, applicable year of Edition & Addenda.

3. METHOD

3.1 After receiving the required electrodes from the supplier, Store In-charge shall ensure
that there is no damage to any packet and the necessary Batch Test Certificates have been
received.
3.2 Store In-charge shall inform welding engineer about receipt of welding consumable for his
verification and review of Test Certificate.
3.3 Welding Engineer checks the Test Certificate, Batch No. & shall verify Test Certificate
conformance with ASME Sec .II part C.
3.4 On acceptance of same, Store In charge will put it in proper racks.
3.5 Electrode shall be un packed by Store In-charge and shall make arrangement for placing
the electrodes in baking oven whenever required.

4. BAKING & HOLDING ELECTRODE

4.1 Electrode baking to be done as recommended by manufacturer’s instruction.


4.2 Carbon Steel & Stainless Steel electrodes are placed in separate ovens.
4.3 Baking time starts when the oven temperature has reached to baking
temperature
4.4 During the whole baking time the oven must be kept closed.
4.5 After baking time is over electrodes shall be transferred to holding oven &
holding temperature shall be maintained throughout at 150°C.
4.6 Holding work may be omitted when the welding consumables are issued immediately.
4.7 Records of the above are maintained in Electrode Baking register.
4.8 Electrode shall be issued from the store on Material Issue Slip for Welding Consumables.

4.9 Shop/ Field Site control


4.9.1 Each Welder shall be provided with portable electric oven, capable of
maintaining holding temperatures (150°C).
4.9.2 Not more than 25 Electrodes shall be issued at any single instance.
4.9.3 Stores In charge Shop / Filed Site shall ensure that electrodes are directly
collected in such portable ovens; he shall also ensure that correct
quality and quantity of stubs are returned prior to issuing fresh electrodes.
4.9.4 Baking and holding oven temperature shall be calibrated.
4.9.5 During Holding portable oven shall be cross checked by temperature gun .
4.9.6 Electrode backing temperature/holding temperatures shall be displayed in
electrode baking area.
