4. A personal computer retail company sells five different computer models through three stores
located in a large metropolitan area. The inventory of each model on hand each in each model is
summarized in matrix M. Whole Sale (W) and retail (R) values of each model computer are
summarized in matrix N.

5. A company with two different plants manufactures Beds and Swivel chairs. Their
production cost for each furniture is given in the following matrices.
Plant X Plant Y
Bed Swivel Chair Bed Swivel Chair
Materials $30 $25 $36 $27
Labor 60 80 54 74
Find,
i) Combined costs of the two plants?
ii) Average cost of production for the two plants?
iii) If cost of each item in plant X is increased by 10% and that of Y is decreased by 5%,
compute combined cost of production for the two plants?
6. A farmer raises only cows and goats. He wants to raise a total of 16 animals. He has only
Birr 50 for his purpose, out of which he spends Birr 5 to raise a cow and 2 raise a goat.
How many of each animal will be raised to satisfy the need? ( use the inversion method)
7. Using both the inverse and Gauss-Jordan method, solve the following question. Which
procedure is shorter and easier to use?

9. Special food for athlete is developed from two foods X and Y. The new food is to be
designed in such a way that it contains exactly 16 ounces of vitamin A, 44 ounces of vitamin
B, and 12 ounces of vitamin C. Each pound of food X contains one ounce of VA, five ounce
of VB, and one ounce of VC. On the other hand each pound of food Y contains two ounce
of VA, one ounce of VB, and one ounce of VC. Find the number of pounds of each food to
be used in the mixture in order to meet the above requirements?
10. A tooth paste company makes a major breakthrough in improving its product (brand A) and
launches an aggressive sale campaign. After acquiring 10% of the market, the company
hires a market research firm to help estimate the percentage of the market it might expect to
have in the future. The research firm finds, after extensive survey that if a person uses
brand A, then the probability is 0.8 that the person will buy it again when he runs out of the
tooth paste. On the other hand, a person using another brand will switch to brand A with a
probability of 0.6 when he runs out of the tooth paste.
