Oyumá Oloye Native American Church

Oyumá Oloye means the Dawn of Wisdom. The Dawn, from where Our Father Sun rises, is the
place from which all life, all harmony, health, abundance, in short, from which all good flows.
The Dawn is the birthplace of all wisdom and knowledge in this world. And it is through
knowledge that we attain wisdom. It is through wisdom that we attain humility and simplicity. It
is through humility and simplicity that we attain true wisdom. It is a path without an end.

Mission
The Oyumá Oloye Native American Church is dedicated to the work of the Creator: to the care
and well-being of every living thing in our world as they our relations and to the preservation of
our Indigenous Heritage.

We work to heal mind, body and soul and to help all who come with a come to us with a good
heart to find their own true paths in life in alignment and harmony with the forces that
surround all of us. We also seek to preserve the treasures that are our indigenous traditions and
culture. As a great heritage, a priceless inheritance and a sacred trust they cannot be allowed to
pass quietly into the night, but must be nurtured and allowed to thrive on their own terms.

Like many indigenous worldviews, our church regards everything and everyone in the world as
being alive, aware, and interconnected and worthy of our respect and care. We regard plants,
animals, mountains, oceans, rivers as all being conscious in their own way as manifestations of
the sacred that surrounds us. Our relationship with nature is an intimate one, where we
constantly interact with the world in a familiar yet respectful way.

To this end, we regard the 'Ndi Xi Tjo (mushrooms of the genus Psilocybe) as our Eucharist, as a
sacrament and as one of our greatest medicines.* The 'Ndi Xi Tjo were given to us by N'ai Ts'oi
(Father Sun)/N'ainá (The Great Spirit/God) to heal us, to attain balance, and to aid us to find our
true paths on this Mother Earth and to communicate directly with N'ainá. The 'Ndi Xi Tjo spring
up wherever Christ/Quetzalcoatl walked and his blood dropped onto the Earth and are His
blood and Flesh.

In our endeavors, we bring to bear indigenous wisdom, most particularly from the Afro-Cuban
religion of Santería and from the Mazatec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. But we stand in support
of all indigenous peoples here on Mother Earth.

The Oyumá Oloye Native American Church in accord with our Mother Church, the Oklevueha
Native American American Church, base ourselves on the principles of Charity, Forgiveness,
Humility, Gratitude, Faith, Respect, and Honor.

*As the spirits that inhabit the 'Ndí Xi Tjo can be extremely sensitive, it is imperative that all
who choose to take them into their body to be properly counseled, cleansed, sanctified and
prepared for the encounter. And it is of utmost importance to the health and safety of they
individual who chooses to partake of our sacrament must do so on their own free will and on
the basis of INFORMED consent. And, for the health and safety of the individual, those
partaking of our Sacrament should only do so under the guidance of a properly trained and
experienced chota chjine (Person of Knowledge) or properly trained and experienced medicine
person who will act as their guide, never leaving their side before, during, and several hours
after the encounter (to explain, provide counsel and where offerings made to the spirits in
thanks). In addition, we ask that the 'diet' be followed, where the individual as well as the
chota chjine we ask that participants refrain from sexual activity for four days before and four
days after the ceremony.

Sacraments/Medicine:
'Ndi Xi Tjo/'Ndi Xti Santo (maz. Little Ones Who Spring Forth/Little Saint Children) –
Mushrooms of the genus Psilocybe, especially Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe caerulescens,
Psilocybe mexicana, Psilocybe mazatecorum.

The 'Ndi Xi Tjo is our Eucharist and were given to us by N'ai Ts'oi (Father Sun)/N'ainá (The Great
Spirit/God) to heal us, to attain balance, and to aid us to find our true paths on this Mother
Earth. The 'Ndi Xi Tjo spring up wherever Christ/Quetzalcoatl walked and his blood dropped
onto the Earth. The 'Ndi Xi Tjo advise us how to heal the individual, and take us to places where
other Chicons or Earth Spirits and Chota Títjon (“Principal Ones) reside. The 'Ndi Xi Tjo advise on
what we need to do to heal the individual and teach us how to lead better lives in harmony with
all the forces here on Mother Earth. The spirits who reside in the 'Ndi Xi Tjo often effect cures
through their power alone as well. It is the 'Ndi Xi Tjo themselves who decide who is to become
a chota chjine or Person of Knowledge.

San Pedro – Wild Sacred Tobacco (Nicotiana rustica).

San Pedro is made from ground Wild Sacred Tobacco mixed with lime and water that has been
consecrated. It is applied to the wrists, the inside of the elbows, the throat, the back and the
four directions of the head in order to cleanse and sanctify the individual. At times tobacco is
smoked during a velada in the form of cigars to gain clarity and insight or the smoke used to
cleanse and individual.

Ceremonies
Sarayeyeo/Limpieza: Cleansing using elements of the plant or animal kingdom. These
cleansings are often performed passing albahaca (Ocimum sp.), marpacifico (Hibiscus sina-rosa)
or fruits over the body before the Orichas or the Chicons to remove negavity and to sanctify
individuals. Copal is also burned as incense and passed over the body to cleanse and sanctify.

Veladas:
Veladas (sp. “Stay Awake, vigil”) are ceremonies where the sacrament/medicine known as 'Ndi
Xi Tjo (Psilocybe mushrooms) are taken into the body. Veladas are our form of mass as well as a
Great Healing of mind, body and spirit. Preparations for the velada begin with limpiezas with
albahaca or marpacifico and purification of the participants with copal incense in front of an
altar already prepared with flowers, cacao beans, guacamaya feathers and paper. San Pedro is
applied to various parts of the individual bodies to sanctify and protect them on their journey as
well.
In our particular (Mazatec) tradition, a velada is usually held for single individuals or couples
and the chota chjine stays with them constantly during the night, praying and singing to guide

their journeys and to appeal to the Earth Spirits to aid the individuals and to ensure focus so as
to avoid 'getting lost' in the visions. For this reason, it is important that the chota chjine is
experienced and very familiar with the terrain in the 'Ndi Xi Tjo's homeland. During the velada
the 'Ndi Xi Tjo and other Principal Ones speak and tell us what we need to do to heal the
individual and to bring them back into harmony with Mother Earth and their true Path. The 'Ndi
Xi Tjo often cure directly through their power and their én or mushroom language itself. At the
end of the velada.

Ifá Divination:
Ifá is the highest form of divination in Santería. It is performed by high priests known as
babalawos (fathers of the secrets) who are specialists in divination and the remedies contained
within the system of Ifá to heal, to resolve situations and to help align a person with the forces
around them and with their own Path in life . It is through divination we learn the will of the
Orichas/Chicons and the egguns (the Dead). In our church, the need to hold a velada usually
comes up during divination.

Ebbó:
Ebbós are offerings to the Orichas/Chicons (Forces of Nature) and/or the Dead. These offerings
are part of the reciprocal relationship we have with Mother Earth and all her Forces/Spirits.
Ebbós are our means of showing respect and gratitude for their help. They are also used as
remedies so that the Orichas and the Dead can heal us, resolve our problems and put us in
alignment with Mother Earth.
