SYNTHRO®-STAB TF Series
Formaldehyde scavengers

help to make environment cleaner

Aldehyde scavengers
Aldehyde is a chemical function which can be included on various molecules. The best known aldehyde is formaldehyde which has been
recently labeled CMR 2 in France and CMR 3 in Europe.
Free formaldehyde is an ongoing concern for textile, paper, construction materials. For years these substrates have been treated with
reactants containing formaldehyde to provide specific properties. The use of formaldehyde free substitutes or extreme low formaldehyde
containing resins has reduced the need for formaldehyde scavengers, but extra sources of formaldehyde contribute to decrease the
Indoor Air Quality .
Therefore solution to scavenge formaldehyde is one of the main concern for innovation in constructions material, paints and
coatings.

Sources of Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is often used as a cross linker in urea, phenol or melamine based thermosetting resins or as a biocide. The main
applications are :

• Wood panels (MDF, Chipboard)

• Insulation panels (Rock or Glass wool)
• Acoustic Ceiling Panels
• Paper filter
• Preservative in waterborne paints

These products release formaldehyde in the atmosphere and since legislations exist in more and more countries on the maximum
formaldehyde emission in public places, Synthro®-Stab TF formaldehyde scavengers attract a lot of interest from manufacturers of
the above mentioned materials.

Synthro®-Stab TF product line can help construction materials to meet the very low emission level or can act as real depolluting
material if introduced in construction material formulation or paint formulation.

What makes a difference on chemistries used?

-> Reduces free formaldehyde of substrates by about 90 %

-> Absorbs Free formaldehyde from environment by covalent link, and forms heat stable innocuous molecules.
-> Dosage from 1 % to 3,5 % calculated on total formulation, easy to incorporate on post addition.

1 g of Synthro®-Stab TF reacts with: Synthro®-Stab TF 275 ~ 46 mg formaldehyde

Synthro®-Stab TF 501 ~ 158 mg formaldehyde

Calculation example of estimated dosage of Synthro®-Stab TF 501 for a given lifetime of 12 years:

• European standard room of 30 m3 (ceiling roof surface 12m² + walls 30 m² = 42 m² to paint)

• The medium standard indoor pollution is estimated at 30 µg/m3 (Afsset Agency - 2007)
• To reach the A+ standard in 2022, CH2O must be < 10 µg/m3, representing an absorption of 20 µg/m3 (600 µg for the 30 m3 room)

• The EN 16000 norm indicates a changing air rate of 0,50 h-1, which represent 300 µg/hour to be absorbed for this 30 m3 room

• If 300 µg/h is absorbed: 33 180 000 µg should be absorbed in 12 years.

• 1g of Synthro®-Stab TF 501 absorbs 158 mg of CH2O Then, 33 180 mg CH2O will be absorbed by 210 g of TF 501.

• Ceiling and walls are painted with decorative paint applied at 150 g/m², therefore 6,3 kg of paint are needed to cover 42 m².

To guarantee 12 years absorption in the standard conditions, the dosage of Synthro®-Stab TF 501 is 3,3 % in the total paint
formulation .
