FOUNDATIONS OF MANAGEMENT

FIRST SEMESTER

INTRODUCTION AND FOCUS QUESTION:

This quarter provides you with learners’ essential knowledge and opportunities to develop
your skills and gain understanding in the preparation and understanding of the nature and concepts
of management. You will be able to know the needs of an entrepreneur or manager of a business
entity. He/she will be expected to show efficient and effective management skills. Differentiated
activities and hands-on activities were given to you for opportunities to transfer what you have
learned.

CONTENT STANDARD:
The learners have an understanding of basic concepts and theories of management.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learners shall be able to apply management theories & concepts in solving business cases.

WHAT IS MANAGEMENT?

Management defined as all the activities and tasks undertaken for archiving goals by
continuous activities like; planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Management is essential
for an organized life and necessary to run all types of management. Good management is the
backbone of successful organizations.

Mechanics:
The students are directed to plan a community pantry.
A leader or moderator is elected, and the students discuss the event, using an action plan
template, as follows:
 What – list of activities for activity
 When – schedule or deadline for completion of activity
 Where – location for activity and/ or supplier for activity
 Who – person/s in charge or group assigned for activity
 How – required resources for the activity, e.g., vehicle, chairs
 How much – estimated budget for activity.

Shall I expand my Business?
Mr. Reyes is the sole proprietor of a small computer shop located at the corner of the West
Avenue and EDSA in Quezon City. From a current capacity of 30 computer desktops, he is
thinking of expanding his business by doubling the number of his computer desktops.
Presently he is maintaining 5 employees, which include the three trained computer assistants,
an administrative assistant who also works as accountant and utility person who makes sure
the office is always kept clean and orderly. The business operates from 8 to 10 pm. A security
personnel whom he has contracted from an agency safeguards the computer shop.
