356 Objectives
The course attempts to address the specific topics relevant to Physics.
The focus is on the basic concepts with introduction of some advanced topics
and applications in the area of Physics
Subject Outcome
1 have understanding about concept of oscillators, oscillatory circuit, and
classification of oscillator, alternator and oscillator, fundamental principle of
oscillator.
2 have understanding about concept of radio frequency carrier wave, types of
modulation, amplitude modulation, modulation factor, analysis of modulated
wave.
3 have understanding about digital signals- Analog versus digital, Binary system,
Ideal digital signals, and Digital waveforms.
4 have understanding about the basic gates: NOT gate, OR gate and AND gate,
Universal logic gates: NOR gate, Bubbled AND gate, De-Morgan’s first
theorem.
5 have understanding about Boolean Laws and Theorems: Basic laws, OR
operation, AND operation, Double inversion and De-Morgan’s theorems.
6 have understanding about Overlapping groups, rolling the maps, eliminating
redundant groups, Product of Sums method, converting a truth table to an
equation.

UNIT-I
Oscillators: (7 hours)

Introduction to oscillators, oscillatory circuit, classification of oscillator, alternator and oscillator,


fundamental principle of oscillator, feedback requirement for an oscillator- Barkhausen criterion for
sustained oscillations. Feedback oscillators: Tuned collector oscillator, Hartley oscillator and Wien-
bridge oscillator.

Modulation and Demodulation: (8 hours)

Introduction, need for a radio frequency carrier wave, types of modulation, amplitude modulation,
modulation factor, analysis of modulated wave, power in AM waves, generation of AM waves,
Frequency modulation and its expression, Phase modulation, demodulation and detection.

UNIT-II

Digital Electronics: (8 hours)

Introduction to digital signals- Analog versus digital, Binary system, Ideal digital signals, Digital
waveforms, voltage levels, switching time, period and frequency, duty cycle.

Digital Logic: (7 hours)

The basic gates: NOT gate, OR gate and AND gate, Universal logic gates: NOR gate, Bubbled AND
gate, De-Morgan’s first theorem, Universality of NOR gate, NAND gates, Bubbled OR gate, De-
Morgan’s second theorem, Universality of NAND gates.

UNIT-III

Combinational Logic Circuits: (5 hours)

Boolean Laws and Theorems: Basic laws, OR operation, AND operation, Double inversion and De-
Morgan’s theorems, Duality Theorem, , Pair, Quads and Octets.

Karnaugh Simplifications: (10 hours)

Overlapping groups, rolling the maps, eliminating redundant groups, Sum of Products method-
equation and logic circuit, Truth table to Karnaugh map, three variable maps, four variable maps,
converting a truth table to an equation, Logic circuit, Conversion between SOP and POS.

The student will be able to:

Instructions for the paper-setter:

Please go through these instructions thoroughly and follow the same pattern while setting the paper
as the students have been prepared according to this format.

Maximum Marks = 60 Time: 3 Hours

Weightage per unit = 20 marks (excluding over attempt weightage)

1. Question Paper will consist of ten questions.


2. Section A of question paper is compulsory, containing five parts each of 2 marks covering the
whole syllabus (short answer type- total 10 marks)

3. Set three questions from each unit I, II and III. Students will attempt 5 questions selecting at least
one question from sections B, C & D. Each question carries 10 marks. Questions of Section B will
be from uwnit I, Questions of Section C from unit II and Questions of section D from unit III
