I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. determine the rules in adding and subtracting polynomials using vertical method;
2. analyse and perform different activities;
3. collaborate with their group mates.

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparation
1.Routinary Activities
a. Opening Prayer
Class, let us all stand and feel the presence of our lord
as we pray.

Mr. Glenn Guelas, Kindly lead the prayer. The students are expected to
pray.
b. Greeting the class

Good morning! Class. Good morning! Mam.

Before you sit down please pick up the pcs. of paper (The students will pick up the
under your chair pieces of paper.)

c. Checking of attendance

Mr. Kim Cubillo, is there any absent from the class today? Mr. Kim Cubillo is expected to
answer.
Thank you.

2. Motivation

Last meeting we defined a polynomial as a monomial

or sum of monomials and we also discussed some
definitions related to it. Our activity for today is related to
our past lesson; it is entitled “Call me maybe”. So now, I will
group you in to two (2).

Please count one to two.

(The teacher will assign their group seating (The students will proceed to
arrangement.) their proper places.)
Ok class, listen carefully. There are two cell phones
here in our board, one for group 1 and the other one is for
group 2. I will distribute cards which consists letters and a
piece of paper which contains the questions and the clue,
this cell phones will help you to find the correct answer
through its keypad. You will arrange the letters on the
screen of the cell phone. Please make sure that all your
answer will be fit on the screen.

In each number, there should be different sets of 3

representatives in each group. So everybody will
participate.

The first group, who will get the correct answer, will
consider as the winner. Is there any question class? None Ma’am!

(The teacher will distribute the materials.)

First activity:

(For group 1)
1. He is an Arab mathematician. His works on algebra, (Students are expected to work
arithmetic, and astronomical tables greatly advance with their group mates.)
mathematical thought. The algebra treatise Hisab al-
jabr w’al-muqabala was the most famous and
important of all his works.

5. Number multiplied to the variable.

(for group 2, same questions but in reverse number (5-1))

The game is start now! Go! (Each group will start in finding
the answer in each question.)

(The first group who will get the correct answer will discuss
what is on the puzzle and the teacher will add some ideas to it.)

These are the answers:

1. Abu Muhammad
2. Polynomial
3. Degree
4. Terms
5. Coefficient
(for group 2 answer, the answer will be in reverse order (5-1))
B. Presentation

Now class, let’s have now our new lesson about

polynomials which is “adding and subtracting polynomials.”

In solving addition and subtraction of polynomials, this can (The students will listen
be done horizontally and vertically. To add two or more attentively.)
polynomials using vertical method:

1. Arrange the polynomials so that similar terms are in the

same vertical column.
2. Find the sum of the terms in each columns.

Example 1:
Add: a. (3 x 2−5 x−6)+(5 x 2−7 x+ 9)
b. (7 x 2 y +3 x y−4 x y 2) + (−3 x 2 y −8 x y +9 x y2 )

(The teacher will answer number 1 using horizontal and

vertical method and after answering and explaining the
answer, the teacher will ask 2 students who will answer
number 2 using horizontal and vertical method.)

Anyone from the class who wants to answer number 2

using vertical and horizontal method? (2 students will volunteer)

Solutions: a. 3 x 2−5 x−6 b. 2

7 x y +3 x y −4 x y
2

+5 x 2−7 x+ 9 +
(−3 x ¿ ¿ 2 y −8 xy+ 9 x y 2 )¿
2 2 2
8 x −12 x +3 4 x y−5 x y+5 x y

using horizontal method:

a. (3 x 2−5 x−6)+(5 x 2−7 x+ 9)= 8 x 2−12 x +3
b. (7 x 2 y +3 x y−4 x y 2) + (−3 x 2 y −8 x y +9 x y2 ) =
2
4 x y−5 x y+5 x y
2 Ma’am we prefer to use
_______
Which do you prefer class, horizontal or vertical method?
None Ma’am!

Any question in adding polynomials?

To subtract one polynomial from another:

1. Arrange the minuend and the subtrahend so that

similar terms are in the same column.
2. Add the inverse of each term of the subtrahend to the
corresponding term of the minuend.
3. In step 2, the procedure is equivalent to changing the
sign of each term in the subtrahend and then
proceeding as in addition. At first, the change in signs
may be shown as indicated in the solutions.

Example 2:
Subtract: a. (10 a2 b−ab+7 a b2) -
(4 a ¿ ¿ 2 b+6 ab−2 a b 2)¿
3 2 2 3
b .(5 x −3 x y +6 x y + 2 y ) -
3 2 3
(2 x −5 x ¿ ¿ 2 y +2 x y −3 y )¿

(The teacher will answer number 1, after answering (A student will volunteer.)
and explaining the answer, the teacher will ask a student
who will answer number 2.)
Anyone from the class who wants to answer number 2?
None Ma’am!

Solutions:
a. 10 a2 b−ab+7 a b2
−¿ ¿
2 2
6 a b−7 ab+ 9 a b

b. 5 x 3−3 x2 y +6 x y 2 +2 y 3
-¿ ¿
3 2 2 3
3 x + 2 x y + 4 x y +5 y

Is there any question about subtracting polynomials?

(Students will count.)
Now, let’s have group activity.

C. Application

Again class, I will group you in to four groups, count one to

four.

(The teacher will assign their group seating arrangement.)

This game will be like quiz bee, I will distribute papers in

each group and your group answer will be written there.
You are only given 1 minute to answer each questions, your
answer should be raise after the given time.

In order for your group to supply the missing coefficient,

you must listen attentively to the audio I will play, this is a
tongue twister. I will repeat it only twice.

For example:

(Peter X + 13) + (Piper X +20)

You will substitute the number of times Peter and piper

mentioned in the audio.

The group who will get the correct answer will gain 5 points
and those groups who will not get the correct answer will
Yes Ma’am!
be deducted 3 points. The group who will have the highest
points at the end of the game will be exempted to the quiz
(Students are expected to work
later.
with their group mates.)
Is everything clear?
Answers:
(The teacher will post on the board the question and will
play the audio.)

Questions: 3. 10+3 x−3 x 2

methods used in solving

polynomials. And we prefer to
What have you learned in our today’s lesson? use ______ method because it
is more convenient to use. We
also learned that cooperation
within the group is very
important.

E. Evaluation

Do as directed:

1. Add the sum of (2 x 2 y−3 x y 2−7 xy) and

(−5 x 2 y −9 x y 2 +3 xy) to (−14 x 2 y+ x y 2−2 xy)

2. Subtract (3 x + 5 y −6 xy +2) from
(2 x❑−7 y +10 xy −5)
3. What must be added to (2 x3 −5 x2 +6 x +7) to get
( 3 x 3+ 2 x 2−5 x−3 ) ? (Students, who are finish, will
4. What must be subtracted from (4 x 3+3 x 2−9 x−4) to get pass their papers.)
( 6 x 3 +5 x2 −12 x +9 ) ?

5. Subtract (8 x + 13) from ( x 2 +5 x +7 )

To those who are finish, kindly pass your paper.

IV. Assignment

Journal Entry: Which method do you prefer when

adding and subtracting polynomials, horizontal or
vertical?  Explain your reason. Goodbye Mam!

Cleaners please take charge to clean the room, the rest you may go.
