Reflection Paper 7 Sundays
Seven Sundays, a film directed and created by Cathy Garcia-Molina isn’t just an
ordinary ups and downs situation of a Filipino family; instead, it tackles these deep
sources of challenges and success, on what’s behind these situations.
Manuel Bonifacio, a widowed father of the family, found out that he was diagnosed
with cancer and only have seven weeks to live and accomplish what he hasn’t done
yet. Bonifacio had four offspring named Allan, Bryan, Cha, and Dex, who were all
occupied in their own respective lives. As Bonifacio had felt lonely because of the
situation, he decided to tell the whole family about his current health situation to bind
them all together at the very last time as he is still alive.
The Film shows one of the many issues in the real world, lack of communication.
The four children barely had time for each other which results in miscommunication,
misunderstanding, and chaos inside the household. Beyond these arguments, each
one of them was facing huge conflicts.
Allan, the eldest son of the family, was charged with bankruptcy in their family
business, to which he displays displeasure toward his younger brother.
Bryan, a successful businessman of his own, is the younger brother after Allan. Later
in the film reveals that both Allan and Bryan had this tension between them for years,
for the reason of their differences, more specifically with handling money, business,
and handling decisions of the whole family.
Cha, the only daughter, had been going through an unhealthy marriage life with her
husband who is cheating on her multiple times in their marriage. They have children
of their own, but cha mostly takes good care of his children. Due to her unfortunate
situation with his marriage and his husband, Cha kept his situation and problems
from her family specifically with her husband’s unfaithfulness.
Dex, the youngest child of the four, is the black sheep of the family. Was influenced
negatively by his friends and he created this as a coping mechanism to run away
from his problems. Later in the film shows how he was neglected and always left
alone as a child.
After that, it also shows the family’s lack of transparency and understanding of each
other. The children wouldn’t stop arguing and would always stick to their own
perspective, even with little things such as what the father would eat. Bonifacio, only
wanted to see his children on good terms before he passes and pretended to die
anytime soon.
After watching the film, I am still bothered by the thought that the family situation
could be solved if they had been more open-minded and understanding with proper
communication to prevent misunderstanding and not let their feelings take over their
own selves in communicating and solving the family problems. Considering that the
Bonifacio family really went through rough roads just to learn from their mistakes.
The important thing is that at the end of the film, they settled and accepted their
differences, put down their pride and chose love.
