The United Nations is an international organization founded on October 24,

1945 by 51 countries committed to maintaining world peace and security,
fostering friendly relations and promoting the development of nations, as well
as working for human rights. Today, it has 193 member states, which are
represented in the General Assembly.
Mexico and the UN have collaborated in a strategic alliance since the creation
of the first UN office in Mexico in 1947. Currently, the United Nations System
in Mexico (SNU) is a new generation multidisciplinary team, within the
framework of the Reform of the United Nations, which focuses efforts more on
people and less on processes with the aim of being more agile and effective in
supporting the efforts of the State towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda
for Sustainable Development. The UNS is made up of more than 25 agencies,
funds and programs with a presence and activities in the country, which work
for sustainable development in Mexico from various approaches, according to
their mandates and specialties, collaborating with key counterparts at different
levels of government and sectors of society.
In 2020, the United Nations Cooperation Framework for the Sustainable

Development of Mexico 2020-2025 (Cooperation Framework) was signed with
the Mexican State, the first in the country aligned with the 2030 Agenda and
built from a participatory and inclusive approach. Based on a joint analysis of
the situation in the country, four areas of work and two cross-cutting areas were
prioritized and agreed upon, based on the added value of the mandates and work
of all the agencies in the country
WAR IN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE
The geopolitical situation that has been configured at the beginning of 2022
defines a historical moment in which the prospects of the main world powers
are reflected. With the deployment of Russian military forces on the borders
of Ukraine, the international post-cold war order is called into question, at
least with regard to Europe, and a decisive step is taken in reaffirming Russia's
strategic positions.
Reaching the point where Vladimir Putin dares to challenge the world's
leading power and the most important military alliance requires a very precise
calculation of the correlation of forces in the international system. The
disruptive movement involved in establishing the conditions for an invasion of
Ukraine is based on the premise that NATO will not intervene in defense of a
country outside the Atlantic Alliance. While the defensive organization forged
in 1949 has military capabilities superior to those of any nation, Russian
mobilization occurs in a context that makes an armed response by NATO
impossible, since the escalation of the conflict is beyond any consideration,
given the magnitude of the costs and its global repercussions.
Putin's calculation is based on geopolitical reality, but it does not exclude risks
and contingencies. Russian action takes place on the edge of the razor because
irreparable mistakes can be made that lead to a great conflagration, while
taking hostage to a strategy adventured not only to the population of Ukraine,
but also to that of Russia. What does Putin intend to take such a dangerous
path?
Analytically, the axis of the Russian strategy put into operation in Ukraine is
to keep up with what is considered the greatest threat to national security and
to channel a revisionist policy that seeks control of the space that was part of
the Soviet Union. Such a strategy inherits the line of action originally
proposed by Stalin and which consists mainly of seeking the displacement of
the United States from European territory and the division of NATO. The
Atlantic Alliance has always been the greatest strategic concern, first of the
USSR and then of Russia, because its main support is the military and nuclear
power of the United States. In this sense, the current conflict between Russia
and Ukraine is determined by the conditions determined by the Cold War and
that last until the 21st century.

1. On the ground: the fight for the east
Since its initial plans to invade the entire country failed, Moscow has focused
on capturing the Donbas.
It is an eastern Ukrainian area that is made up of two regions: Donetsk and
Luhansk.
Taking some of them would allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to present
his people with an achievement, something he needs after the failures he
suffered at the beginning of the invasion.
As the days go by, Russia continues to gain ground and move forward, albeit
slowly.
This Saturday, Russian forces completely occupied Severodonetsk, a city that
was once home to more than 100,000 people and has now been reduced to
rubble, after weeks of fighting to control it.
2. Closer to the EU
Putin has expressed in the past that he considers Russians and Ukrainians as "a
single people, a unique whole." He sees Ukraine as a territory that,
historically, has belonged and belongs to Russia.
His invasion is widely seen as his attempt to force Kyiv to return to Moscow
orbit.
But he has achieved the opposite, bringing Ukrainians closer and closer to
Europe.
Last week, Brussels granted Ukraine the status of candidate for the European
Union (EU), a decision that the president of the European Council, Charles
Michel, described as "historical."
The Kremlin was already waiting for the announcement and downplayed it.
Putin said he had "nothing against" Ukraine's possible membership in the EU.
Candidate status is the first official step towards accession to the EU, a
process that can take many years. The status does not guarantee that you will
be able to fully join the club one day.
But, according to analysts, Ukraine's new status sends a strong message to
Moscow: neither Kyiv nor Brussels accept Putin's vision of establishing a new
European order.
3. The effect of sanctions
Earlier this week, reports emerged that Russia stopped paying a debt for the
first time since 1998, after breaking a key deadline.
The Kremlin reported that he had the money to make a payment of $100
million, but the sanctions made it impossible for him to arrive at his
destination on time.
To date, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and
other countries have sanctioned more than 1,000 Russian people and
companies.
As a result of the sanctions that have already been imposed, the country is
expected to suffer a deep recession and contract 10% in 2022.
Although the shelves of supermarkets in Moscow are still quite full, according
to reports by BBC Russia editor Steve Rosenberg, some imported items are no
longer available.
Likewise, a large number of Western companies have totally or partially
closed their businesses in the country, such as Nike, McDonald's, Nestlé, Visa,
Mastercard, Sony, Netflix and many others.
In addition, the country registered annual inflation of 17.1% in May and car
sales fell by 83.5% during the same month.
International sanctions would have caused the economic collapse if they had
arisen out of nowhere, Chris Weafer of the consulting firm Macro Advisory in
Moscow told the BBC.
But because Russia has experienced sanctions since it invaded Crimea in
2014, it has been able to make some adjustments to cushion the damage,
according to the expert.
