.
Situation 1. A continuous wall is founded on three rows of piles spaced a = 1.5 m
apart. The longitudinal pile spacing is b = 1.8 m in the front and center rows and C=
2.7 m in the rear row. The resultant of vertical loads on the wall is P = 750 kN per
linear meter and the resultant moment is M = 225 kN-m per linear meter.See Figure.
A.) What is the load in each pile along row 1 in kN? B.) What is the load in each
pile along row 1 in kN? C.) What is the load in each pile along row 3 in kN?
SOLUTION
Situation 2. The concrete column and footing carries the loads shown in Figure.
Footing width, B= 2 m, Column dead load = 366 kN, Column live load = 447 kN,
Moment due to wind = 325 kN-m, Compressive strength of concrete = 20.7 MPa.
A.)What is the minimum footing length, L, required for the entire footing to
beconsidered effective in carrying these loads? B.)What is the value of L such that
the maximum soil pressure is 144 kPa? C.)What is the value of L, such that the
minimum soil pressure is 40 kPa?
SOLUTION:
Situation 3. A pile cap is shown in Figure 16-27. The column is 400 mm × 400
mm and carries a service dead load of 900 kN and service live load of 1300 kN.
Centroid main reinforcing bars are located 85 mm from the bottom of the footing.
Use fc= 21 MPa and fy = 345 MPa. A.) Calculate the required footing thickness
based on wide beam shear. B.) Calculate the required footing thickness "" based on
punching shear. C.)What is the factored moment at the critical section for moment?
SOLUTION
Situation 4. A 300mm square column is supported by a 2m x 3m x 0.5m
thick footing carries unfactored loads shown in the Figure. The unit
weight of the soil and concrete are 18 Kn/cm3 and 24Kn/cm3,
respectively. There is a surcharge load of 4 kpa on top of the backfill due
to loads induced in the ground surface. A.) What is the net foundation
pressure in kpa at edge A of the fooring? B.) What is the net foundation
pressure in Kpa at edge B of the footing? C.) What is the minimum
required gross allowable soil bearing capacity to carry the given loads in
kPa?
SOLUTION:
Situation 5. A 2.4m x 2.4m square footing supports a 350mm x 400mm
column. Thickness of footing=0.6m. Total factored axial load =1,818 Kn,
fc’=20.7 Mpa, fy= 280 Mpa (20mm diameter bars bothways). Clear bar
covering = 70mm. Use Strength reduction factors 0.75 for shear and 0.9
for bending. A.) Calculate the actual nominal shear stress in the footing
(Mpa) at critical section for wide-beam action. B.) Calculate the actual
nominal shear stress in the footing (Mpa) at critical section for two way
action. C.) Determine the number of pieces of 20mm diameter reinforcing
bars required in each direction of the footing.

Note : Some of the solutions provided are in 2001 NSCP Code. Set it as a
guide in studying the process of it and resolve it using NSCP 2015.The
mosost common difference of NSCP 2001 and 2015 is the shear reduction
factor, 0.75 in 2015 and 0.85 in 2001. Thank you and Goodluck.
