UAE ARCHITECTURE
- The United Arab Emirates, or simply the Emirates, is a
country in Western Asia. It is located at the eastern end
of the Arabian Peninsula and shares borders with Oman
and Saudi Arabia, while having maritime borders in the
Persian Gulf with Qatar and Iran (Wikipedia, n.d)
UAE ARCHITECTURE
- The United Arab Emirates is an elective monarchy formed from a federation of seven emirates, consisting of Abu
Dhabi (the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain.[14] Each emirate is
governed by an emir and together the emirs form the Federal Supreme Council. The members of the Federal
Supreme Council elect a president and Vice President from among their members. In practice, the emir of Abu
Dhabi serves as president while the ruler of Dubai is Vice President and also prime minister.[15] In 2013, the
country had a population of 9.2 million, of which 1.4 million were Emirati citizens and 7.8 million were
expatriates.[16][17][18] As of 2020, the United Arab Emirates has an estimated population of roughly 9.9 million
(Wikipedea, n.d).
UAE ARCHITECTURE
- Islam is the official religion and Arabic the official language. The United Arab Emirates' oil and natural gas
reserves are the world's sixth and seventh-largest, respectively (Wikipedea, n.d).
UAE ARCHITECTURE
GEOLOGY
-The geology of the United Arab Emirates includes very thick
Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic marine and continental
sedimentary rocks overlying deeply buried Precambrian. The region
has extensive oil and gas resources and was deformed during the last
several million years by more distant tectonic events (Wikipedea, n.d).
GEOGRAPHY
-According to the CIA’s World Factbook, the UAE has a total surface
area of 83,600 square kilometers.
-The UAE lies within the northern desert belt of the Arabian
Peninsula, known for its scarce and unpredictable rainfall, high
temperatures and humidities, and prolonged periods of sunshine
(about eight hours per day in winter and 11 hours in summer).

CLIMATE
CLIMATE
-The UAE has a harsh desert climate, generally hot and humid in the
summer but cooler in the mountainous regions, such as the Hajar al-
Gharbi Mountains. July and August are the hottest months when
average maximum temperatures exceed 48 °C on the coastal plain.
During the late summer months, a humid south-east wind called
sharqi (‘easterly’) makes the summers too humid for comfort, but
there is usually a slight drop in temperature in the evening (fanack,
2020).

HISTORY
HISTORY
-Fell under Great Britain’s sphere of influence.
-Beginning around 4000 BCE climate change brought increasing aridity
to the eastern Arabian interior, reducing the population there and
contributing to migrations towards, and increasing Arabization of, the
Gulf coast.
-Peace treaties laid the basis for British rule in the Gulf, in exchange
for which London promised to protect the emirates against foreign
aggressors. In 1968 Great Britain – whose power was waning since
World War II – announced its decision to terminate the treaty
relationship. The seven emirates subsequently took steps to form the
UAE, which has since developed into one of the important centers in
the Persian Gulf region.

ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURE
-Traditional architecture in the United Arab Emirates was heavily
influenced by the desert landscape, culture, lifestyle and available
building materials.
Between the 1960s and 1970s, architecture in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) remained solely traditional, with narrow alleys and
windtower houses still in use, reflective of a strong Bedouin heritage.
Architecture is influenced by elements of Islamic, Arabian and Persian
culture.

ARCHITECTURE
-In the early 1970s, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the then
ruler of Dubai, employed British architect John R Harris to create the
stylish modernist architecture for which the major cities of the UAE
are known today. The introduction of exposed glass curtain walls
represented the beginning of a movement, used extensively in the
design of almost every commercial and high rise building façade in the
Persian Gulf.[4] In less commercial areas, Emirati architecture
continues to heavily reflects the custom and traditional lifestyles of
the native people. Building materials are simple, in contrast with the
refined images of Dubai and Abu Dhabi today.
