Detailed Lesson Plan in Science

The lesson plan outlines a science lesson on elements, compounds, and mixtures. The objective is for students to be able to identify pure substances and mixtures, appreciate their importance, and list examples found at home. The lesson involves an activity where students group examples as elements, compounds or mixtures. Key concepts that are discussed include defining elements as substances that cannot be broken down further, listing the three groups of elements, and defining compounds as formed by two or more different atoms bonded together and mixtures as physically mixed substances that can be separated. Examples of each are discussed through student participation.

Detailed Lesson Plan in Science

Prepared by: Adrian P. Tastar

I. Objective: At the end of the lesson 80% of the students will be able to;
a. to be able to identify pure substance (element & compound) and mixtures,
b. to be able to appreciate the importance of pure substance in our home and in the
society, and
c. list all the pure substance (element & compound) and mixture that can be found in our
home and kitchen.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures
References: Science and Technology III: Chemistry 2012, pp. 52-56, Science and
Technology III: Chemistry 1997, pp. 42-52
III. Procedure:
Preparatory activities
 Opening Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
Review of previous lesson about Matter

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Activity:
The teacher will give a short activity
about the subject matter, the class will be
divided into three groups.

(Choose a representative each group)

Okay class, I will give you a piece of The students are now doing the activity
paper and you will post in the board, as they are pasting the paper on the board as
what you observe there are three group of what they have to do.
word, the element, compound, and
mixture. what you will going to do is
paste the paper that I have given to you in
the board which they are belong.
The students are now explaining their
Each group will discuss why they paste work
the word on that column
Analysis: Student (1): sir, we have observed that
Okay class what have you observe in there are 3 different groups namely;
our activity? Element, Compound, and Mixture.
(anyone from the class?)
Student (2): We also observe sir that in
Okay, thank you. every group sir there are corresponding
Another class? substance like in the mixture sir, tea is an
example of mixture since mixture is
combining of more substances.

Okay, well said student (2)

About the subgroup of matter which is
Okay based on our activity we will talking the pure substance and mixture
about?
Okay, about the sub group of matter
which is the pure substance (the Element
& Compound) and also the mixtures.

Abstraction: Student (3): Sir, Element is the simplest

Okay class first we will talk about component of a substance.
element, so what is element?

Okay thank you.

Element class is a substance which
cannot be broken down into simpler
component substances
Student (4): Sir, commonly there are
There are three groups of elements class three types or group of elements namely;
and what are they? the metals, non-metals and the metalloids
Anyone?

Okay, very good, so there three groups

of elements, the metals, non-metals, and
metalloids. Student (5): Sir, metals are heat conducts
In every group of elements class, they and permeable and also, they have definite
have different characteristics, first the shapes
metals.
What do you think the characteristics of Student (6): Sir, metals also conducts
metals class? electricity.
Okay, what else class?
Okay, thank you.

Student (7): Sir, the cannot conduct

The non-metals class what do you their electricity and they do not have definite
characteristics? shape since some of them are liquid and
gas.

Okay, very well said.

Non-metals class are equally opposite
from the metals.
The class: Metalloids Sir!
Next group of element class
Student (8): Sir, metalloid somewhat
Okay, what is metalloids? resembles the properties of metals and
non-metals
Okay, thank you

Metalloids class are those intermediate

element with have typical properties of
metal and non-metal
Student (9): Carbon (it depends on the
student as long it is correct) sir! Non-
metal sir.
Okay example of elements class?

Okay, thank you. Is carbon a metal or Student (10): Silicon sir. (it depends also
non-metal? as long as it is correct.
Student (11): compound Sir!
Give me an example of metalloids?

Okay, lets proceed to the next topic Student (12): Compound sir are two or
which is the? what? more elements bind together to form a
new substance.
So, what is compound class? anyone?

That’s correct!
So compound class is differing from an
element in that an element contains only a
single type of atom while a compound
consists of smallest units which contain at Student (13): Salt sir! since it is from two
least two different types of atom joined different atoms such as sodium (Na) and
together by chemical bonds Chlorine (Cl) to form a new substance.
Give me an example of compound?

The Class: Mixtures sir!

Student (14): Sir, two or more elements

Next group is?? or compounds physically mixed, never
So, what is mixtures? pure, always heterogeneous. Can be
separated by physical methods.

So, mixture, as the name implies,

consist of different elements or
compounds
which have been physically mixed
together.

For example, mixture of oil and water,

they never combined together, the they
joint physically. Student (15): Tea sir.

Give me another example of a

mixture class?
Okay thank you
The students are doing their activity
Application: (Individual/ Group)
List all the elements, compounds, and
mixture that you can find in your home
and in your kitchen (at least 5) and
indicate their uses.

Assessment:
Differentiate Element, Compound and Mixtures. 3- 5 sentences only
Assignment:
Study or read in advance Acid and Basis
