Detailed Lesson Plan in Math

Grade 4
I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the discussion, the learners should be able to:
a. how to partition an irregular figure into squares and/or rectangles to find the area of the
irregular figure.
b. finds the area of irregular figures made up of squares and rectangles using sq. cm and;
c. integrates many ways of finding the area of irregular figures.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Finding the Areas of Irregular Figures

III. Teaching Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
Good morning, everyone! Let’s all stand for our
opening prayer to be led by (student name)

2. Greetings
Once again, good morning, everyone. How was your
day?
-Were good Cher.
-Were doing fine teacher.
3. Checking of Attendance

That’s good to hear. Now were going to check your

attendance. Is everybody from the class present or not?
Okay let me see if everyone’s present and yes everyone’s
present.

4. Reminders (Class Rules)

Let me remind you to our classroom rules. Place your bag

beside on your chair. Raise your right hand if ever you
have questions.

B. Review

“Last meeting, we discussed about finding the area of a

rectangle or a square”.
.
What is the formula in finding the area of a square?

- The formula in finding the area of a

How about in finding the area of a rectangle?
square is A = s x s

Very good class.

- The formula in finding the formula
of rectangle is A = l x w
D. Motivation
Let’s do this activity for a quick recall of finding the area of a
square or a rectangle. Match the square or rectangle in
Column A to its area in Column B. Write the letter of the
correct answer on your answer sheet.

Column A Column B

1. Students do the activity

10 cm
a. 16 cm²

2.

6 cm b. 120 cm²

8 cm

3. 2cm

c. 144 m²
4. 12 m d. 36 cm²
e. 100 cm²

Possible answer:
1. E
2. D
3. A
4. C

E. Lesson Proper

1. Activity

Are you ready for our topic today?

From the image. What can you say about the

shape?
- Yes teacher

- Its’s an irregular shape cher

Do you know how to solve the area of an

irregular shape?

2. Analysis
- No cher
“Today we are going to discuss finding the area of
an irregular shape.
There are many ways in finding an area of an
irregular shape.

Let’s have an example here.

2m

4m 3m

7m

Do you have any idea on how to solve this figure?

In solving this figure, we need to make figure of a
square or a rectangle on this irregular figure.

Consider this:
2m

4m X Y 3m

7m

From this we formed two rectangles rectangle X and

rectangle Y.

Now we can solve for the area of a rectangle.

Area of X Area of Y
A= l x w A= l x w
= 2m x 4m =5m x 3m
= 8m² = 15m²
How did we get 5m?

We subtract 2m and
7m

The sum of the areas of rectangle x and y

are gives the area of the irregular figure.

A= X + Y
=8m² + 15m²
= 23m²

The area of the given irregular figure is 23m²

Another example

10cm
6cm 6cm

4cm 4cm

How can we break it up into rectangle or square?

The rectangle formed is labelled as X. The square
formed is labelled as Y and Z.

10cm
X
6cm---------- ------------6cm
Y Z

4cm 4cm

Area of square Y area of square z

A= s x s A= s x s
= 4cm x 4cm = 4cm x 4cm
= 16cm² = 16cm²

Area of rectangle X
A= l x w
= 10cm x 2 cm How do we get 2cm?
= 20cm²
We subtracted 4cm from 6cm
which is the original length.

Area of the irregular figure:

A= area of x +area of y + area of z
= 20cm² +16cm² + 16cm²
= 52cm²

Who wants to solve this next example? (0ne of the student raised her
hand.)

For you’re assignment, I will not give you task but I will give you a copy of different solutions in finding the
areas of irregular shape and please do have a review and understand it since next meeting we will have our
short quiz. Am I clear?
