I. Introductory Concept

A chemical compound is a pure chemical substance consisting of two or more

different chemical elements that can be separated into simpler substances by chemical
reactions. Table 1 shows are some of the differences between element and compound.

Classification of Compounds

Acid. The word acid comes from either of these Latin words: acidus meaning “sour”, or
acetum meaning “vinegar”. Acids are compounds that produce hydrogen ions (H+) in
water. The hydrogen ions are then combined with a water molecule to form ion (H3O+).

Properties of Acids
1. Acids taste sour. The taste of vinegar is caused by acetic acid (CH3COOH).
Lemons and other citrus fruits have biting taste because they contain citric acid
(C6H8O7). Lactic acid (C3H6O3) gives unsweetened yogurts its characteristic
aftertaste.
2. Acids reacts with certain metals, such as magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and tin (Sn),
liberating Hydrogen gas.
3. Acids turn blue litmus paper to red.
4. Acids react with bases to form salts and water.
5. Its pH value ranges from 1 to 7.
Examples: Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) Hydrochloric acid [HCl], Acetic acid [CH3COOH].

Base. A base is a substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH+). The chemical formula of a
base usually ends with OH.

Properties of Bases
1. Bases taste bitter. Unlike acids, bases are not present on the common food or
beverages, so they are not readily available for taste testing. Bases can be
poisonous, so never taste unknown items to identify if they are bases.
2. Bases feels slippery or soapy. When dissolved in water, bases are slippery to touch.
However, bases can be corrosive so touching to identify them is dangerous.
3. Bases turn red litmus paper to blue.
4. Bases reacts with acids to water and salts.
5. Its pH value ranges from 7 to 14.
Examples: Sodium hydroxide [NaOH], milk of magnesia [Mg (OH)2], calcium hydroxide [Ca
(OH)2].

Concept of pH
The pH is a measure of the hydronium
ion concentration in a solution, it
ranges from 0 to 14. The 0 to 7
indicates that a solution is acidic,
middle point of 7 shows that it is a
neutral (neither acidic or basic), and
from the range of 7 to 14 indicates that
the solution is basic. https://www.shutterstock.com/search/ph+scale

2
pH Indicators. The three most popular indicators used in many laboratories are litmus
paper, the phenolphthalein indicator, and methyl orange. Natural pigments from the
leaves and the colorful petals of flowers and fruits such as red apples skin and violet
camote leaves may be used as indicators.

II. Learning Skills/Competency

Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds. S7MT-Ig-5

III. Activities

Activity 1. HOUSEHOLD OF COMPOUNDS

Directions: Draw or cut out picture of at least five (5) compounds found in your home.
Identify the name and write the chemical formula of each compound, the composition
elements and its use. Fill in your answers on the table provided.

Activity 2. ELEMENT VS. COMPOUND

Directions: Draw E if the statement describes an element, C if it describes a compound and

EC if it describes both.

____________1. Pure substance

____________2. Can be broken down by chemical means.

____________3. one type of atom

3
____________4. Salt is an example

____________5. two or more elements chemically bonded

____________6. simplest substances

____________7. Hydrogen

____________8. 118 samples

____________9. Found in nature

____________10. Limitless number

Activity 3. ACIDIC OR BASIC?

Materials Needed: Clear cups or containers, violet camote leaves, water, vinegar, sprite,
calamansi juice, sugar, pan or casserole, ladle, spoon, and cooking apparatus (gas,
induction, or charcoal stove).

Direction:
1. Boil 10-15 violet camote leaves in water until the liquid gets dark.
Caution: Observe extreme care while boiling.
2. When the liquid has cooled down, squeeze all the purple juice you can from
the leaves into a container.
3. Place each sample in separate cups. Label them. (6 points)
4. Put two tablespoons of the boiled camote extract in each container. Stir and
Observe sample.
5. Take photos of the sample before and after the camote extract was added,
and send it to your respective group chat. (5 points)
