CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Philippine educational system has adapted Career counselling where it helps the

students to realize the importance of knowing what career they want. It is good to know first all

your strengths and weaknesses to know what job will suit you and to have an option to choose

from. Career counselling has become usual on this day but not easily accessible. According to

Jobzogoly (2019), before the late 19th century, there was very little available and very little

known about career counselling. Most people during this time found work through family,

friends, or the community. However, a rise in immigration caused a more organized and

methodized way for people to find jobs.

Career counselling, also known as career guidance, is designed to help students choose or

change a career in life. A student's job is one of the most important aspects of adulthood. It can

be a stressful event, especially if you can't decide what career you want. Trait-and Factor theory

has been one of the most enduring theories of career counselling. In essence, it focuses on

STI COLLEGES | 1
matching people's personalities with careers. This theory requires considering someone's abilities

or aptitude, personal values, and occupational interests to determine someone's personality. The

process includes three key steps: Studying individuals, surveying career options, and Using "true

reasoning" to match individuals with an occupation.

Career counselling is all about opening the mind, and these are mainly needed by people

who are lost and confused about the career they want. Some people are afraid to decide on a

career, and some people are not taking it seriously. We chose this to study because it is good to

know what is best for us to be sure that we are pursuing a career that will fit our skills. They need

to be more confident to do the things they can and accept the things they cannot. They need to

have a vision of the things they want in life or the outcome they want to happen and set some

long-term goals they want to achieve in life. Taking some advice to someone on what career is

best for you is not good because it is hard for someone to recognize the child's strengths and

weaknesses, and that is why career counselors are there to help you understand it.

A career counselor can help by discussing the things you can do or your strength to have

career options, and they can help you discover a lot about yourself. They will give proper

guidance to know how important choosing the right career is and having a good decision in that

situation. The support of an experienced counselor can help a person clear their mind on what to

think first in choosing a career. Career counselling can help you to realize how important to

choose the right career path for you. It can make you put it in your mind and talk about it more

deeply to know every detail to think first. Also, we can be more prepared and have at least some

idea about the career we chose. Choosing a career will be a big part of our life, so it is better to

plan as early as possible. The students need to discuss employment and prepare for their future.

STI COLLEGES | 1
Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to find out the implementation of career counselling on

discovering the true self, as related to the effectiveness or efficiency of Senior High School

students in STI College Lipa, of Lipa City as a basis for career path guidelines for implementers.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

5. What are the factors that affects the perspective of the students in terms of understanding

in the career guidance program?

6. What are the perceived effects of the implementation of career counselling on the career

path of the students?

7. What is the influence of interventions roles to support students in SHS plan their career to

make the desired choice?

8. What are the perceptions of the students on the extent of utilizing the school counsellors'

role in helping SHS students to choose a desired career?

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the intended recipients who are the students, teachers,

curriculum planners, parents, the community, and the future researchers.

For the Students. They will benefit from this study by providing them with research-

based findings on the effects of the effectiveness or efficiency of career guidance programs on

their career paths. With the implications that this study will generate, they will be helped by

further improving the educational process of primary education.

STI COLLEGES | 1
For the Teachers. This study will help the teachers by providing them the data on how

the students perceived the use of a career guidance program. In doing so, they will be aware of

the weakness and strengths of the program. In their way, they will be able to improve on the

perceived drawbacks.

For the Curriculum planners. This study will help them by providing them the needed

data to work on for the benefit of the learners.

For the Parents and the community. This study will help them by allowing the children

or students to achieve their full potential. Once students are successful, the community will also

be progressive.

For the Future researchers. The study will provide them recommendations which they

can use to work on their locale and respondents.

Limitations and Delimitations of the Study

This study looked into the perceptions of the Senior High students in the career guidance

program from STI College Lipa in Lipa City on the role of career counselling programs on their

career paths. The respondents' parameters include the career path's effectiveness or efficiency

using a career guidance program. These were correlated to their perceptions of career guidance

programs and their effectiveness or efficiency to their career paths. The researcher was thus not

able to explore gaps in the understanding of various subjects, such as Academic Track,

Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track, and more. Moreover, the researcher limited this

research to specific fileds/contents, there were a lot of career fileds provided in the organization

studied. The researcher did not consider the differences among those career tracks and the impact

STI COLLEGES | 1
of the differences on the profile of the responsdents. The study does not cover the geographic

location of the participants. The researcher did not consider where the participants were located

as long as they had taken the interview from the researcher in which the study was conducted.

Conceptual Framework

Furthermore, the direction that this study will follow is presented in Figure 1 using a

flowchart. The figure shows the input, process, and output paradigm of the research. The input

construct of this study is the profile of the respondents, who are Senior High students, on their

age, gender, and academic track.

CHAPTER II

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter presents the related literature and studies reviewed by the researcher to

better understand the concepts of the problem being investigated.

Related Literature

The following key concepts about the use of career guidance in STI College Lipa are

presented in this review.

Local
According to De Torres (2021), Career counselling is something that provides direction

or advice as to a decision or course of action. Career counselling is counselling on career

opportunities. Career counselling is a relief process, program, and solution for students to

consider and understand themselves. It helps get to know the workplace, prepare for the future

that corresponds to a satisfactory life term, determine correctly, make choices, and express

themselves effectively.

STI COLLEGES | 1
Moreover, the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) improvement to K to 12 programs

highlighted the enhancement of Philippine learners' skills and career pathways. K to 12 Students

will be trained for global competence. As specified in Sec. 11 of DepEd Recommendation, "to

properly guide the students in choosing the career tracks that they intend to pursue, the DepEd, in

coordination with DOLE, TESDA, and CHED, shall regularly conduct career advocacy activities

for secondary level students. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 27 of Republic Act No.

9258, otherwise known as the Guidance and Counselling Act of 2004, career and employment

guidance counselors, who are not registered and licensed guidance counselors, shall be allowed

to conduct career advocacy activities to secondary level students of the school where they are

currently employed.", cited by De Torres (2021).

On top of that, in the year 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Secondary School

Career Guidance and Counselling Act, which applies to public and private high schools. The act

aims to help students decide more wisely and accurately on their future profession. To do this,

schools institutionalized the career advice and counselling service. The act also imposed the

establishment of a National Secondary Schools Career Guidance and Counselling Program

(CGCP) to provide students with high-quality advice and advice services. The centers, led by a

trained career and a job specialist, are managed by the guidance counselor. This decision

standardizes, organizes, and emphasizes the career guidance process.

Additionally, the Career Information, including the program: The National Career

Assessment Examination (NCAE), also takes place on an annual basis for public and private

high school students worldwide "to test and measure their abilities, ability or tendency" in

particular. It is intended to guide students in their choice of courses or job opportunities. In line

with DepEd (2017) cited by Santos (2019), The Department of Education prepares students in

STI COLLEGES | 1
making a great choice in their career as early as Grade 9. DepEd administers yearly to the Grade

9 students the National Career Achievement Examination (NCAE). The examination aims to

determine the learner's aptitude and occupational interest on any of the Senior High School

(SHS) tracks. Occupational interest is the learner's preference in specific vocations and career

categories. The two-day exam also aims to guide the conduct of career guidance at the school

level and ensure the development of skills and competencies required for the world of work and

career choices.

Such information may support by other programs designed to improve awareness of Career

Counselling. In the Philippines situation, implementing career guidance and counselling in

schools helps to assist students in achieving the goals set out in three areas of one's life,

including family, social, academic, and career aspects.

Foreign

Choosing a correct and suitable career according to an individual's preference is

important when ensuring self-wellbeing. Efforts to assist each individual to introspect and gain

awareness about careers and opportunities that are available before making career choices should

be intensified, Ismail et al. (2018). Hence, careful planning is crucial, especially from the ages of

15 to 18 years old because at that age range students are at a stage where they are exploring

careers, Super Theory (1971). Therefore, schools' counselling and guidance services should play

an essential role in enhancing career maturity.

Furthermore, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

(UNESCO) elucidates that the career counselling of youth comprises of four main components:

STI COLLEGES | 1
(a) providing assistance to the individuals to acquire greater self-awareness in areas such as

interests, values, abilities, and personality style, (b) linking individuals to sources so that they

can become more well-informed about occupations and professions, (c) involving human beings

in the decision-making process so that they can choose a career path that is well suited to their

own interests, values, abilities, requirements and personality style, and (d) supporting individuals

to be dynamic administrators of their career paths including management of career transitions

and balancing various life roles as well as becoming lifelong learners in the sense of professional

development over the lifetime (Career Development, n.d.), cited by Kapur (2018).

Along with it, according to Martaningsih (2018), Guidance and counselling play a role in

helping to optimize the development of individual learners in various development aspects,

including in career development. Guidance and counselling can play a role through career

guidance services with various programs designed, and of course, there must be service

continuity from basic education level to higher education level.

Over and above, a person needs to learn how to handle one's career management skills. A

career is a lifetime goal; a trade can never come to a halt. An individual should improve career

management skills. Career counselling is becoming increasingly important in all educational

establishments. There is a particular counselling center in higher education institutions where

individuals in apprehension or concerned or underlined about their job chances and potential

lives are helping to ease their fears. Students will achieve a job offer or a promising future that

will offer satisfaction.

Over the past years, many theories and articles discuss ever-changing career development

that students may face over time and develop and determine the appropriate career path. And as

specified by Peila-Shuster (2017), the children in the twenty-first century, to a larger extent than

STI COLLEGES | 1
previously, will live their life trajectories with unclear or blurred career-life plots. Moreover,

they will be required also to devise novel ways of surviving and thriving. As if it is not already

challenging enough to chart their path through a changing and unpredictable world, children will

in addition face numerous challenges in the form of barriers and limited opportunities. Career

counselors should help children by supporting, sustaining, and preparing them to design and live

successful lives. Here will come the role of Career consultants and career growth facilitators as

professionals offer career advice. School guidance counselors provide these resources to middle

and high school students, allowing them to get a head start on career options. Professionals and

counselors will also help students by providing career direction and counselling, and advice on

colleges and other higher learning institutions, depending on the student's achievements and

desires. Discussions with students assist in guiding them in selecting the appropriate courses

before acceptance into a university or college.

By the same token, career counselling and guidance entails speaking with people about

potential career prospects and doing a detailed review of one's talents, strengths, credentials, and

previous experience so that a mentor can lead him in the right direction. As per Holland's Theory

(1992), Holland's theory maintains that in choosing a career, people search for environments that

will let them use their skills and abilities and express their attitudes and values. Career

counselling supporting educational success for students identifies their career path and authentic

self, helping to be career readiness and career planning until career decision-making requires

seriousness in its activities—implementation of Guidance and counselling administrative

routines activities, handling discipline cases in a narrow view. In line with this, the career

counselling program includes all relevant programs and resources and the coordination and

STI COLLEGES | 1
delivery needed to best support students, teachers, parents, school administration, and the

community.

Synthesis:

In conclusion, chapter two presents the related literature and studies reviewed by the

researcher to better understand the concepts of the problem being studied. The following key

concepts about the use of career guidance in STI College Lipa are presented in this review.

Career counselling is the process of advising people about their work choices. The method of

giving people advice on their career choices It is a tool, or a curriculum, and solution that

encourages students to think about and acknowledge themselves. In appropriate educational and

occupational choices, as well as career decisions based on potential job demand and

requirements in the future. For local literature, the Secondary School Career Guidance and

Counselling Act, which extends to both public and private high schools, was signed by President

Rodrigo Duterte in 2019. The act helps to assist students in making more informed and accurate

decisions about their future careers. To do this, schools established a career advice and

counselling program. In addition, the act mandated the development of a National Secondary

Schools Career Guidance and Counselling Program (CGCP) to provide students with high-

quality advice and counselling services. For foreign literature , guidance and counselling plays a

big part in assisting individual learners in maximizing their development in a variety of areas,

including job development. Guidance and counselling plays part in career guidance systems for a

variety of programs, and there must be service quality from elementary to higher education

levels.

STI COLLEGES | 1
Along with, this study was conducted to determine the effectiveness or efficiency of

career counselling on finding one's true self among Senior High School students in STI College

Lipa City, as a basis for career path guidelines for implementers. To consider regularly to help

people in creating self-understanding, articulating course in their careers, and accomplishing

their potential and finding their reason in their daily lives. Moreover, the expected beneficiaries

of this study are students, teachers, curriculum planners, parents, the government, and

prospective researchers. The impact of career counselling programs on the career paths of Senior

High students in the career guidance program at STI College in Lipa City was studied in this

paper. The effectiveness or efficiency of a professional growth using a career guidance

application is one of the metrics used by the respondents. These were linked to their opinions of

career guidance programs and how effective or efficient they were in guiding them along their

chosen career paths. To fit better actual job circumstances in various parts of the world,

counselling theory and strategies are being developed career guidance and counselling in

educational and organizational settings, as well as for people from multiple cultural and

economic backgrounds, is needed, or internationalization advice on a job.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research method used, the respondents of the study, the

instrument to be utilized, preparation and validation of the questionnaires, procedures in

gathering data, and interpreting the data that shall be gathered.

Research Design

This study focused to find out the implementation of career counselling on discovering

the true self, as related to the effectiveness or efficiency on Grade 11 students in STI College

Lipa respectively, in Lipa City as a basis for career path guidelines for implementers.

STI COLLEGES | 1
The descriptive research design was employed based on the given the nature of the study.

Descriptive research design as defined by Research Design Team (2016) is a study in which

information is collected without changing the environment such as nothing is manipulated.

Sometimes these are referred to as correlational or observational studies. Descriptive study can

provide information about the naturally occurring health status, behavior, attitudes or other

characteristics of a particular group. Descriptive studies are also conducted to demonstrate

associations or relationships between things in the world around.

Moreover, the study utilized the qualitative approach using convenience sampling as the

data gathering technique.

Sampling and Collection

This study involved a total population of 408 Grade Eleven students from STI College

Lipa specifically, Lipa City. Two percent of the total population was asked to participate in the

study. Convenience sampling was utilized.

Table 1 presents the distribution of the samples.

Instrumentation

Interview was the major instrument used in gathering data. The interview proper included

the perceptions of the Grade 11 students on the effectiveness or efficiency of the implementation

of career counselling on discovering their true self which would be the basis for career path

guidelines for implementers. To supplement the data gathered from the interview, unstructured

interview among the respondents was conducted. This was to support or substantiate the data

gathered from the survey.

Data Collection

The data gathering procedure began by asking the authorities for the permission in the

conduct of the study. Once the permission was granted, the researchers personally contacted the

selected respondents in STI College Lipa to inform the Grade 11 students about the study and

also to request their help in distributing the questionnaire to the chosen respondents by random.

Then, the researcher retrieved the questionnaire. An unstructured interview was

conducted based on the highest and lowest ratings given by the selected respondents.
