During the 90's a slum in Metro Manila became popular in the medical world because it has become a

place to harvest kidneys. For a good amount of money residence in that area allowed themselves to
become donor to "help" patients with renal failure get a transplant. Do you think it is unethical? Why or
why not? What is your stand?

- In my opinion, it is unethical. Basing on the Philippines’ Organ Donation Act of 1991 (RA 7170)
says that it is only legal to donate an organ if the donor is your: (1) Spouse; (2) Son or daughter
of legal age; (3) Either parent; (4) Brother or sister of legal age; or (5) Guardian over the person
of the decedent at the time of his death. It is also said that a non-relative is also allowed,
however they must prove that they are emotionally related to recipients and their act is out of
altruism or a selfless act. Therefore, it is illegal if there is no emotional bond between the client
and the donor. This is unethical because on the Deontological Moral Theory of Immanuel Kant
(1788), it is believed that ethical actions follow universal moral laws. He also perceives that if a
person's emotions or desires cause them to do something, then that action cannot give them
moral worth. It is morally unworthy since the donors are receiving money from it. The donors’
purpose may have been to “help” patients with renal failure get a transplant, however it is only
because they are also being rewarded from it. They wouldn’t agree to donate their organ if
there were no money related. Moral worth only comes when you do something because you
know that it is your duty and you would do it regardless of whether you liked it. It is basically
telling us that we cannot act if it favors our own purposes more than respecting the goals of
others.
