The technology that made the modern music business possible came
into existence in the New Jersey Laboratory where Thomas Edison
Inventor created the first device to both record sound and play it back. He was
awarded U.S Patent No. 200,521 for his invention- the phonograph- on
February 19, 1878

Edison’s eperiments with the telephone and the telegraph led to his invention of the phonograph in 1877. It occured to him
that sound could be recorded as indentations on a rapidly-moving piece of paper. He eventually formulated a machine with a
tinfoil-coated cylinder and a diaphragm and needle.

Menlo Park, New Jersey where he could devote his full attention to invention. He promised that he would turn out a minor invention
