As future nurse, how will you assess and manage your patient's diet
Taking care of the patients' nutrition is one of the most important duties of a nurse.
Since the patient's or person's life and health depend on it, I must focus on this and thoroughly
study it as a future nurse. According to the articles that I read “The Importance of Nurses and
Nutrition in Healthy Patients” Proper nutrition plays a big role in disease prevention, recovery
from illness and ongoing good health. Nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings, not just
hospitals. While nurses in hospitals may focus more on the dietary concerns of patients
recovering from illnesses, community nurses focus more on prevention. Nurses who work at
schools or community centers can often provide nutritional education to the public to prevent
chronic conditions.Since nurses are the main point of contact with patients, they must
understand the importance of nutrition basics and be able to explain the facts about healthy
food choices to their patients. It also stated the relation between nutrition and health it says that
healthy food choices are vital to preventing illness, particularly chronic illnesses such as
diabetes and heart disease.
During my first year I learned that the health assessment is very important. It is the first
step in determining whether a patient has a problem or not. A thorough nutritional assessment
provides information about an individual’s nutritional status, and also risk factors for nutritional
imbalances. By assessing we must collect the subjective and objective data. In subjective it is
composed of questions regarding normal eating patterns and risk factors.Subjective
assessment data is obtained by interviewing the patient as a primary source or a family member
or caregiver as a secondary source. While in objective assessment data is information derived
from direct observation by the nurse and is obtained through inspection, auscultation, and
palpation. The nurse should consider nutritional status while performing a physical
examination. Here, we'll measure the patient's height and weight to determine whether or not his
or her BMI falls within the usual range. After collecting all the data that needs to be collected in
the nursing process, diagnosis is the next step. These are the diagnoses listed in NANDA that
I've read: “Imbalanced Nutrition: Less than body requirements”, “Imbalanced Nutrition: More
than body requirements”, “Readiness for enhanced nutrition and Risk for Imbalanced Nutrition:
more than body requirements. After that we will make a plan for our patient. We'll create a plan
for helping our patients with their nutrition problems. of course when we make a plan we will
implement it. When implementing interventions to promote good nutrition, it is vital to consider
the patient’s cultural and religious beliefs. Encourage patients to make healthy food selections
based on their food preferences. And the last is the evaluation,It is always important to evaluate
the effectiveness of interventions implemented. Evaluation helps the nurse and care team
determine if the interventions are appropriate for the patient or if they need to be revised.
As nurses, our job is to take care of the health of our patients. Nurses have the expertise
and responsibility to ensure that patients and clients' nutritional needs are met. Providing
nutrition screening and appropriate nutrition advice is essential to improve healthy eating and
subsequent health outcomes. Also in order to effectively teach and aid in the prevention of
diseases that can be acquired, it is important for us to set a good example for our patients as
nurses or health care workers.
