WATER AND WASTE SYSTEM PRESENTATION

POTABLE WATER SYSTEM

The potable water system supplies the galleys and

lavatories with water from a tank via a distribution
system.
It is pressurized by bleed air system. A ground
connector for external supply is also available.

WASTE WATER SYSTEM

The waste water system collects waste water from

lavatory wash basins and galley sinks and discharged
it overboard via drain masts.

TOILET SYSTEM

The toilet system collects waste from the toilet bowls

and stores it in an underfloor waste holding tank. The
tank is emptied and cleaned during aircraft ground
service.
The toilet system uses water from the potable water
system for the toilet flush. Waste is removed from the
toilet bowl due to differential pressure between the
waste tank and cabin.
An electronic Vacuum System Controller (VSC) controls
and monitors the vacuum system.

POTABLE WATER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

STORAGE DISTRIBUTION

The potable water tank with a capacity of 200 l. (53 Potable water from the water tank is supplied through
US gallons) is installed in the pressurized underfloor a system of distribution lines which are routed below
area LH behind the rear cargo compartment. the passenger compartment floor. A part of the forward
distribution line goes through a hose for added
PRESSURIZATION protection. The potable water distribution lines are
insulated and electrically heated to prevent ice
Compressed air is used to pressurize the system in formation in and around the lines.
order to supply water from the tank to the necessary
service locations. The compressed air is tapped from HEATING
the cross feed-line of the engine bleed air and is
connected to the water tank air inlet. In each lavatory, a water heater is installed under
the wash basin. If the quantity transmitter detects a
low level into the water tank, it cuts the electrical
supply of the water heater.
A thermostat maintains the water temperature between
45ºC (113ºF) and 48ºC (149ºF). An over temperature
safety device protects the heating element.

INDICATION

The quantity indication system indicates how much water

is available in the potable water tank. The quantity
transmitter transmits the signal to the indicator on
the water service panel and to the Forward Attendant
Panel. The TANK FULL light on the service panel comes
on when the tank is full.

SERVICING

Servicing of the potable water system can be done with

or without electrical power.
With electrical power, the single FILL/DRAIN handle
mechanically operates the fill/overflow drain valve
and electrically controls the forward drain valve.
Without electrical power, the valves are individually
operated by cables.
The draining operation is accomplished by opening the
fill/overflow drain valve and the forward drain valve.
The filling operation is accomplished by opening the
fill/overflow drain valve and closing the forward drain
valve.
When the tank is full, the quantity transmitter sends
a signal to close the fill/overflow drain valve
automatically.

WASTE WATER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

GENERAL

The waste water drain system disposes waste water from

the lavatory wash basins and from the galley sinks.

DRAIN ASSEMBLY

Each lavatory wash basin has a drain assembly with a

valve actuated by a control knob and a cable.

NOTE: The control knob is operated by the lavatory

user.

DRAIN VALVE

Each drain valve opens only when a certain amount of

water is collected.
This prevents a permanent loss of cabin air
pressurization through the drain lines.

DRAIN MAST

In flight, differential pressure between the cabin and

the drain mast outlet disgards the waste water.
On ground, gravity disgards the waste water.
The drain masts are electrically heated to prevent ice
formation.

On ground, when does the vacuum generator start

to operate?
A - As soon as the aircraft is energized.
B - As soon as the flush switch is pressed
in, and only if the altitude pressure
switch is closed.
C - As soon as the altitude pressure switch
closes.

What happens when the flush switch is pressed at

high altitude?
A - As the differential pressure between the
cabin and the atmosphere is sufficient,
the vacuum generator does not operate.
B - As the differential pressure between the
cabin and the atmosphere is not
sufficient, the vacuum generator does
not operate.

TOILET SYSTEM DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

CONTROL/MONITORING

The Vacuum System Controller (VSC) controls and

monitors the toilet system operation. It also reports
the vacuum toilet system failures to the CFDS and to
the RS 232-C interface for shop maintenance.

INDICATING

The waste holding tank is equipped with a liquid level

transmitter and a liquid level sensor which operate
independently of each other.
When the tank is full, the VSC shuts down the toilet
systems and transmits a message to the Forward
Attendant Panel (FAP): SYSTEM INOP.

SERVICING

The waste holding tank is serviced from a service panel

which is located on the right of the lower fuselage
between FR 65 and FR 66.
The service panel has:
- a drain connection,
- a rinse connection,
- a waste drain valve control handle,
- a limit switch.
TMUWATD02-T02 LEVEL 2

During servicing, the FCUs are automatically

de-activated, thus, toilet use is inhibited.
The waste drain control handle mechanically operates
the drain valve.

A - Waste holding tank.
B - Waste water tank.
C - Potable water tank.

How is the waste transported to the waste holding

tank?
A - By the vacuum created in the waste tank.
B - By water flushing and gravity.
C - By water pressure.

When does the vacuum generator operate?

A - On ground only.
B - Up to an altitude of 4877 m. (16000ft.)

GENERAL

The toilet system controls and indicating includes the

display on the Forward Attendant Panel (FAP) and the
controls on the toilet service panel located at the
bottom of the aircraft fuselage.

TOILET SERVICE PANEL

The toilet service panel is installed in the rear right

side of the fuselage.

DOOR LIMIT SWITCH

On ground, when the toilet service panel door is open,
the Vacuum System Controller stops all toilet
operations and flush signals are inhibited.

DRAIN CONTROL HANDLE

During ground service, when deployed, the drain control
handle allows the waste drain valve to be mechanically
opened.

To flush the tank, use 5 gallons (19 l) of disinfectant
commonly called "Blue Juice".
Now drain the system by extending the control handle.
Once drained, return the handle to the normal position.
Replenish with 2 gallons (7,5 l) of blue juice.
You are now ready to disconnect hoses and replace the
connection caps on the drain and rinse ports.
By closing the drain cap the drain valve automatically
closes.
