You are encouraged to work with other students on the module (especially those in your
study group). If you are having difficulty with any of the questions or want feedback on
specific answers you should ask your tutor in your next tutorial or attend the lecturer’s
office hours.
1. Determine which of the following sets is a real vector space (with the usual addition
and scalar multiplication). In each case, you should (briefly) justify your answer.
(a) The set of all polynomials (of any degree) with complex coefficients.
(b) The set of all polynomials of degree at most 5 with integer coefficients.
(c) The set of polynomials of degree exactly 5 with real coefficients.
(d) The set of all polynomials p of degree at most 5 with real coefficients and such
that p(0) = p(1).
(e) Set of all non-negative functions on R, i.e. functions f : R → R such that
f (x) ≥ 0 for every x ∈ R.
2. Determine which of the following subsets of R3 are subspaces. In each case, you should
justify your answer.
0 0 −1 1
For each of the following, give an example of a subspace of R4 with the stated property
or explain why no such subspace exists.
1
4. Give an example of a subset (not subspace) of R2 that is
(a) closed under addition but not closed under scalar multiplication;
(b) Closed under scalar multiplication but not closed under addition.
