Objectives

Course objective:
This course is aimed at introducing the students to current and important topics in human biochemistry.

Learning objectives:

Students should be able to describe:

 how the cell is able to react to different signals, the role of membrane receptors, how different
hormones exert their effects, the role of G-proteins, the concept of second messengers,
amplification and cascades, regulation of hormone concentrations
 the role of hormones in regulation, the central role of the liver in metabolite distribution, how
metabolism is coordinated during the fed state, fasting, starvation, exercise
 the digestion and absorption of nutrients, nutrients that resist or escape digestion
 human nutrition in terms of optimal nutrition, malnutrition, nutritionally vulnerable groups,
calorimetry, basic metabolic rate, energy expenditure, RDAs, macronutrients, micronutrient,
alcohol intake and metabolism, obesity, the role of vitamins, minerals and waters, the biochemical
basis of nutrient deficiencies, anti-nutritional factors and toxins
 the different body fluids, their roles and how the internal environment is regulated
 free radical formation and tissue damage, the roles of endogenous and dietary antioxidants
 the association of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis,
anaemia with malnutrition and free radical damage, the association of obesity with cardiovascular
diseases

Syllabus
Cellular signaling, endocrinology, the regulation and integration of the metabolic pathways for
carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism, macro- and micro-nutrient nutrition, digestion and
absorption of nutrients, sugar and fat substitutes, vitamin and mineral utilization by the body, energy
expenditure and requirements during feasting, fasting, exercise, nutrient deficiencies, malnutrition and
its sequelae, obesity, body fluids, blood, electrolyte balance, acid-base equilibrium, free radical
formation, antioxidants.
