Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA)

By: Efficaz Consulting & Solution
December 2020
What is the Objective of this study?

To estimate likelihood and consequences of

hazardous events quantitatively (not subjectively)

To envisage the risk to peoples life, injury,

environment damage and affect on structure
around the building.
Who shall go for QRA Study?
 Client with
 Diesel Storage in Tank farms or

 LPG storage in bulk or

 Gas Storage of Chlorine or Ammonia or any other flammable gas or

toxic gas

 Flammable or Toxic Liquid Tank farm or

 Solvent or Chemical Tank farm

What are the basic inputs required for
QRA?
 Quantity of Chemical/Solvent/gas/fuel storage

 Type of Storage (bullet, sphere, vertical tank etc..)

 Available Protection Systems

 Population Data

 Weather Data

 Release Size

 Operating Parameters

 Emergency shutdown philosophy

What will be output of QRA?
 Expected Fatalities

 Pressure Wave affects to Building and Surrounding

 Toxic Release (how many KMs at what intensity)

 Radiation Energy of Fire (how many meters at what intensity)

 Different Couture in Map

How this inputs give quantitative
results?

 Using a Software like PHAST it will quantity by using the

inbuilt library of gases, chemicals, mixtures etc..

 PHAST is developed by DNV GL and it is accepted software

globally.

 It can be done using other software also

 A Safety Expert, shall conduct this study based on realistic

inputs to get accurate output. Expertise is key here.
What are the benefits of QRA?
 Help the management team to decide on

 Onsite Emergency Plan

 Offsite Emergency Plan
 Escape routes
 Control Room Location
 Fire Fighting and other essential building locations
 Environmental issues identification
 Mitigation Plans
 Transfer of Risk (Insurance)
 Capital Expenditure on Safety
 SOP review
 Fire or Explosion Proof Walls
 Inter distance
From where the scenario will be
considered?
Credible scenario is selected from

 Storage Tanks
 Rectors
 Other Process Vessels
 Pipelines
 Other equipments

Glimpse of counters will be demonstrated below
