Crayons and Jigsaw Puzzles:

Some Interesting Facts
Every child has colored on paper with crayons and put a jigsaw puzzle together. But where
did crayons and jigsaws come from? Who invented them?
Crayons
The first crayons were probably invented in Europe and were a mixture of charcoal and oil.
5 Later, wax was added to make crayons easier to handle. In the early 1900s, a non-toxic
crayon was produced in the United States. Crayons began to appear in homes and schools all
over the world. There were 8 basic colors and a box cost five cents.
Here are some interesting facts about crayons:
 The average American child uses up 730 crayons by the age of ten.
10  Children aged two through eight spend an average of 28 minutes a day coloring.
 Between 1949 and 1957, 40 new colors were introduced. Between 1972 and 1989,
florescent colors with names like Atomic Tangerine and Screamin’ Green were added,
bringing the number of colors up to 72. Today there are 120 different colors.
 A Yale University study revealed that the smell of crayons is among the 20 most familiar
15 smells to American adults.
Jigsaw Puzzles
Jigsaws first appeared in Europe in the 1760s, when they were used to teach geography.
Maps were pasted onto wood and the different countries cut out. Children still play with
these kinds of puzzles today.
20 Here are some interesting facts about jigsaw puzzles:
 At the beginning of the 19th century, puzzles had pieces that were cut exactly on the
color lines. There were no two-color pieces to show, for example, that the brown area
(roof) fit next to the blue area (sky).
 Puzzles had no picture on the box, so the subject would only be discovered when the
25 puzzle was finished.
 The wooden pieces had to be cut one at a time, so puzzles were very expensive.
 Puzzles became very popular during the Great Depression, when many people didn’t have
jobs or money. Cheap puzzles made of cardboard were introduced. In 1933, an amazing
10 million puzzles were sold a week.
30 Today, puzzles are still available for all ages.
