INTRODUCTION TO ENGINE RUN-UP

WHAT IS A GROUND RUN UP ?

• The term Aircraft Ground Running is usually used to describe the operation of some or all of the
engines of an aircraft, while on the ground, for the purpose of functionally checking the
operation of either engines or aircraft systems.

WHAT ARE THE SAFETY PROCEDURES:

• Pre-flight inspection or Pre starting inspection. It is a check of the aircraft prior, it

determine the general condition of the aircraft and engine.

• Head the aircraft into the wind. Subject engines are air pressure cooled and depend on
the forward movement of the aircraft to maintain proper cooling.

• Knowledge of the brake and hydraulic systems on any aircraft type for which a person is
permitted to occupy a flight deck seat, for the purposes of engine ground running ,must
be comprehensive .

WHAT TO OBSERVE DURING GROUND RUN-UP ? :

1. Engine Oil Temperature

2. Engine Oil pressure
3. Static RPM ensure that engines are capable of producing take-off thrust.
4. Engine Response to changes in power
5. Any unusual engine noise/vibration
6. Magneto Drop
7. Idle speed
8. Alternator and ammeter
9. Suction gage

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE :

 UNTIE/UNMOOR THE AIRCRAFT
 HEAD AIRPLANE INTO THE WIND
 REMOVE FUEL TANK COVER
 LOCK WHEEL BY EITHER WHEEL BRAKES OR CHOCKS
 CHECK OIL QUANTITY
 OPEN THE FUEL DRAIN TO REMOVE ANY ACCUMULATION OF WATER AND SEDIMENTS
 ADJUST SEAT FOR PEDAL AND BRAKE . CHECK AND TEST
 FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE - ON
 CIRCUIT BREAKER - IN
 AVIONICS OFF: TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO AVIONICS EQUIPMENT DUE TO POWER SURGE.
 REMOVE CONTROL LOCK.
ENGINE STARTING PROCEDURE :

• Mixture- Rich
• Carburetor Heat – Cold
• PRIMING SYSTEM
• Throttle (Engine control )
• Propeller Area Clear
• Brakes applied
• Master Switch (BATTERY) - ON
• Beacon Light – ON
• Hands on the throttle control, other on the ignition key.
• Ignition Switch – Start

IGNITION STARTER SYSTEM :

• Ignition Switch Activates the magnetos by opening the grounding or 'p-lead' circuit; with the p-
lead ungrounded the magneto is free to send its high-voltage output to the spark plug.
• Ignition and starter operation is controlled by a rotary type switch located on the left switch and
control panel.

STARTER CRANKING :
• Ignition Switch Activates the magnetos by opening the grounding or 'p-lead' circuit; with the p-
lead ungrounded the magneto is free to send its high-voltage output to the spark plug.
• Ignition and starter operation is controlled by a rotary type switch located on the left switch and
control panel.

POWER CHECK :
 Check aircraft static power output and observe engine’s reaction while adding power.
( McCauley 2280-2380 RPM / SENSENICH 2175-2280 RPM )
IDLE POWER :
 Gradually reduce ther power from full throttle into close throttle to check the IDLE POWER of the
engine.
 Idle power should be between 600 +/- 25 rpm I.A.W section 11 par 11-49
and oil pressure should be in 25 psi section 11 par 11-8 of the service manual.

ENGINE SHUT OFF :

 Gradually increase the power (observe the engine reaction ) to 1800rpm for 15 to 20 seconds
before engine shut down,.
 (This is to estabilize the oil temperature in accordance with lycoming key operation and service
manual.)
 Reduce the power to 1200 for 5 seconds prior to engine shutdown .
 Mixture control to idle cut off position to shut off engine.
 Turn off avionics equipment and switches.
 Turn off master switch.
 Tun off ignition switch.
 Removed key from the ignition switch.
 Install control lock.
 Tie down the aircraft.
